Basketball Thread About Nothing

while there is not an allowance for a ‘gather’ step in hs hoops it could be made a clean play if the player would have delayed when he picked up the basketball or shot off his left leg without placing the other foot down. i also wonder if the circumstance, being an isolation play for game, actually worked against the player because it allowed the ref to be in a position to clearly see the move, in the free flow of the game it might not have been called

I am sorry but in that situation you cannot make that call. Hard foul only under 10 seconds.

So we treating some HS kid like MJ now? Nba let’s stuff slide. In HS and college you are expected to follow the rules.

And again, why are we pretending the NBA rules for traveling are also the same rules for HS basketball. They aren't. That Harden step-back nonsense is a travel in the purest sense, so on the HS level it will be called a travel.

Point blank.

My argument was situation and context matters. You just proved my point.

But you used Michael Jordan in your example, so it brings in an extra level of judgement when making the call.

If Jud Beuchler did the pushoff on Bryon Russell, it definitely would have been called.

But we can agree to disagree. The call was made.

Context matters was my only point. We can disagree on the setting, HS vs NBA Finals is obviously a different environment. My response was arguing against the statement that if the call is correct you have to make it. I disagree, and apparently you do too. I don't have time to go through the thousands of scenarios where you think its ok and I don't....

But I DON'T agree with that claim.

I think it SHOULD be called regardless of the situation. 100% of the time. If it is a violation, you make the call.

Now whether or not it WOULD be called is a completely different conversation.

What would be done vs. What should be done are two different things.

So to chime in. I officiated NYC catholic HS and some aau for 3 years until I finished grad school and no longer had time. We were told as I was coming up and was getting schooled by the older guys. In a situation like that you absolutely swallow your whistle on fouls unless it’s bad.

However a walk, a carry, or or moving screen. Call that **** asap. You are trying to allow the players to decide the game but once they break actual rules of game flow that’s it.

Which years did you ref in the Catholic League?

Who were the best that you saw up close?

2011-2013. I never made my way up to varsity unfortunately so I was doing JV and freshman games in the A and B division. A few of the kids made d1 but it wasn’t the AA that an outsider might know of a CK, Rice, Molloy, or St Rays that always had the best in the city. At one point it was my goal to make my way up that pyramid but I had a career to focus on after finishing grad school and it wouldn’t work with my schedule.

The AAU games, it was mostly middle school girls actually because that was because I knew someone who was the assignor for games and he use to officiate me as a kid and during a summer league we had in my neighborhood growing up. So he was doing me a favor.
