You seem to be an expert, but why you think its so bad? For me, I just want to gain some pounds and protein shakes seem to be a good option for me right now, seeing how i don't have enough time in the day to eat 4-6 meals. Your advice would be great!.
Protein shakes will not put on weight for you.
They are there as a protein supplement and strictly as a protein supplement for one's daily diet. They are practically useless as a caloric supplement.
In the vast majority of cases they are not necessary unless one weighs 250+.

There is no substitute for a good diet and the proper amount of calories in order to gain the right type of weight. To be totally honest weight gain shouldn't be at the forefront. It should be strength gain.
Weight correlates to strength only at the top levels.

It doesn't take long to make a sandwich or just prepare in advance.

most importnant of all, complex carbs are immeasurably more important than protein intake for training purposes.
Thanks alot on the info

I think they're bad in terms of providing people with false hope as well as enticing people to literally throw money down the toilet.

The only thing is that a lot of people do not get enough protein in their daily diet. Some people need protein shakes to reach the recommended dosage.

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't take in enough protein on a typical American diet.

.5-.75 /pound is more than enough for the vast majority of typical gym goers.
