Black Culture Discussion Thread

Thoughts on this? Maybe it's just me, but I see black-owned businesses charging more than similarly priced non-black products. I've seen plenty of "Black by Popular Demand" shirts going for $50. I'm not paying that much for anyone's cotton t-shirt lol

I've also seen black skin care products going for outrageous prices as well

We discussed this in the Blackout Coalition group on Facebook. I don't mind spending extra money on black items IF it's something I can get real use out of. A t shirt with pro black quotes does nothing for me. That's why I stick to supporting the companies that does something unique. For example, I've found black owned companies for tissue, light bulbs, washing powder, boxer briefs, different skin care routines & certain food items. Those are the ones that will continue to get my money.

You also have to consider smaller businesses tend to have relatively higher manufacturing and distribution costs compared to larger businesses/brands. Making a product and selling to individuals yourself is much different than fulfilling orders for a big box retailer. The prices we pay reflect that.

Buying black for food and cosmetics has been slightly more expensive ($12 vs. $8 for a stick of deodorant). I’ll gladly pay to support my own and hopefully see them selling higher volume in big box retailers at lower prices one day.

I still hold black-owned businesses to the same simple standard I hold any business to: Am I getting my money’s worth?

But you will buy a $300 Gucci t-shirt?

I stop complaining about petty **** regarding black own business. If they selling$30 t-shirt that has a little quote, support or if not keep it moving. Don’t make a whole post about why you’re not supporting them.

The bolder part is what I was conflicted with. I’ve purchased from different black-owned brands and, just like with any other brands, had varying levels of satisfaction. I publicly champion the brands and products I do like, however, I won’t publicly criticize products I was underwhelmed by. Maybe someone else will like it but is on the fence and my experience will push them the wrong way. Every repeat customer was once a first-time customer.

Shoot I really wanted to like the products made by a brotha from my hometown. But I found another brand that I personally like much better. That’s just business but I’m happy because I know who my money went to.

Clothing is largely based on taste. I won’t tell anyone how much they should value or spend on a t-shirt.

I've watched a few videos of people trying to expose him. My question is what are they doing? I like how the NFAC is putting fear in white people by having black people exercise their right to carry high grade weaponry in the south. Tariq wants to talk about his past, but aint Tariq Nasheed the same cat that was a fake Crip gangsta rapper turned Pimp daddy book writer turned pro black mink sliding dvd pusher? So if he can go from the first two to the last one, why can't this Grandmaster change?

goledensilence goledensilence would not matter to you if it was discovered that Grandmaster Jay was an actual agent??

You damn right I will buy a 300 Gucci shirt. You know why? Because Gucci is doing something that no other company is doing. They have their own style and they use quality material, some of which most companies can't get their hands on. Trying to compare them to these Gildan/Pro Black t shirt abusers that have over saturated that lane is crazy. Those type of companies should be glad that people like me are speaking out so they won't be going into a failed situation where they're stuck at home with 500 "Melanin" t shirts that will have to be burned or given away for free.

The high end fashion stuff is eh imo, but the prices between the regular & actual high quality stuff does make sense after u feel the piece.

Personally I think those generic Gucci tee's are corny....and so is those Gildan Melanin shirts. Wouldn't catch me dead in either....But if I had to pick one give me the gildan. At least I would have another $270 in my pocket to go along with the shirt no one cares about that I own.

Carhartt og fits are pretty much my go to. They're durable, tight neck collar, has pocket w/ a cool logo, and they don't look bad when u stain or rip them b/c that's what they're built for.
