Black Culture Discussion Thread

I still fall victim to respectability politics. It sucks because I also feel like people's inability to think the worst of their fellow man is a problem. Like a lot of people just think "well people just can't be that racist/evil/bad/etc". But they are.

But yeah if I happen to have a suit and tie on, I'll do "iffy" things that day to try to take advantage. Like if I need a customer service person at a store to give me a refund or to see things my way, etc. It's sad

Wearing a suit = "the belief that marginalized communities must adhere to dominant cultural norms to receive respect"

Word?

PS:

Couldn't get past the camel mouth itchy scalp head wrap wearing sister to even hear what the brother was saying.

If valuing my appearance = "respectability politics" then sign me up!

Shorty was WAY too comfortable...she needs some "respectability" IMHO.

Too many of us don't care how we present ourselves to the world then complain about what comes with it.

So the Beastie Boys were before my time, but I recently became aware of the whole situation where MJ refused to clear a Beatles sample for one of their songs.

How did the Beastie Boys feel?

""There have been a couple of songs that we haven't been able to put out, and a couple of radio spots we made that haven't been aired, things like that. But I gotta say this - if I ever see Michael Jackson, I'm gonna light his Jeri curls on fire. I'm gonna sneak up on him with a can of lighter and go to work. I think if they had a 3-D movie in Disneyworld of Adrock punching Michael Jackson's face, they'd get a good draw." - Michael Diamond in East Coast Rocker, January 21, 1987

"After a long pause, he (Michael Diamond) responds to a question about Michael Jackson, who as owner of the publishing rights to the Beatles' songs , refused the Beasties permission to put their own customized version of the Fab Four's 'I'm Down' on their album. 'What would I do if I met him?' Mike D says. 'I'd unplug his oxygen tent, rip off his surgical mask and spit in his face.'" - Los Angeles Times, February 1, 1987

WTF??? Wild how comfy "they" felt speaking on a Black man like this :smh:

Still kinda surprised how non-chalant people are with Kodak's existence knowing he was put away for rape.
I've shunned him ever since he belittled darker-skinned women. Everyone has their preferences, but he straight up dissed them. **** that clueless clown.

So what are we suppose to do to him? Cast him away into fire and hell for him to burn away till eternity?

We have this habit of vilifying young black man so hard that they shouldn’t ever be allowed back into society. That’s why the recidivism rate of black men going back to jail is so ridiculous and mass incarceration is such a problem. Kodak did his time, let it rest.

i can see what you’re saying, in general as it relates to a lot of criminal offenses…but rape???

Don't ask me any stupid ******* questions, never said to do anything, just observational. Says enough about you and what you're willing to go to bat for though.

Its not about going to bat for anything, its about when do we let people do their sentence for their time and then we forgive (dont forget) and move on.

Mike Tyson spent years in prison for rape, do we need to bring it up everyday? no we dont, we let them do their time and we move on. No one is perfect

Same for Kodak Black
