Black Culture Discussion Thread

But was a poor choice of words..

he needs to just acknowledge it exists.. but we as black people need to also acknowledge our shh towards Asian people

but we got a whole bunch of shh going on towards each other and it all depends on where we are whether it be light skin vs dark skin, socially, class, xenophobia or whatever other BS

to give a personal example.. ever black person on this planet should be grateful to Haitian people, the impact their revolt had was truly game changing.. and they have been suffering the consequences since

but in the Bahamas, my whole life we have been horrible to Haitians.. it’s not like what happens elsewhere.. but as a society we viewed ourselves as somehow better than them without fully appreciating the context of what they were forced into and the freedoms they legitimately gave to us a nation that is overwhelmingly black.. we didn’t have to face the wrath of the world because we dared to fight back for our birthrights

we have gotten better since I was a child, but there are still issues

China is taking over Jamaica, Caribbean, and most of Africa. While also in black people neighborhoods in USA with their exploitative business. Black people in China face ridiculous racism all the time. What has black people done to Chinese people (particulartly Chinese)?

Im talking to you IATT IATT

i know.. that‘s a global and an extremely serious political problem

that doesn’t mean we need to let slide the shh we do

my problems and frustrations with my government shouldn’t be a license to me to then take it out on say a Chinese construction worker

i can read global news and see what has happened elsewhere in the caribbean and in Africa with China investments.. but I can also be disappointed when listening to our local radio and news stations or look on social media and see the things that get said about “the Chinese“

I take the same critical eye when I look at how the American government operates and how my government acts with them

hell I look at the money we spent couple weeks ago and the jokes we made of ourselves to make will and Kate look good after their embarrassments elsewhere in the region

Humans gonna Human Fam.

Prejudice.

Sincere ignorance.

Conscientious stupidity.

Cognitive dissonance.

I know

Shh is just sad

If you ain’t a specific class of white dude, zero excuses to lack empathy when you start your BS towards others

White women and certain white dudes being the obvious first line examples

Makes me wonder what the world was like before / what the world would be like if rich & powerful English folks didn't invent the social / political construct of race.

The only reason I'm Negro / Black / African American is because white folks (and Jessie Jackson) told me I was

Categories defined by nothing more than social / political constructs for the benefit of the rich and powerful.

The truth is I'm a human being.

Everything else after that is a result of my personal choices / content of my character - no matter if the game is rigged.

Instead of Black vs White it should be Lies vs Truth - but that's not going to work as it threatens the rich / powerful who can only remain rich / powerful in a rigged game.

We had this group chat on Whats App and when the topic of "what are you? African? Native American? Hebrew? Alien from Mars? came up, all hell broke loose. Mind this is a group of all black guys.

Its crazy how divided we are

Why cant you unite with people that don't consider themselves African?

You do realize Africa is a whole continent right?

54 countries, with many cultures, many languages, beliefs, religions, genetics, etc...

Is that the sole basis of our disunity?

Because some of us do not claim to be African?

Is the continent of Africa itself united?

Should it be?

Were my ancestors African? Yes.

What country / culture? Cant be sure.

Were some of my ancestors European? Yes

What country / culture? Cant be sure sure.

What I am 100% sure, proud, and completely unapologetic for is being a Black U.S. Citizen by birth Fam.

That's it and that's all.

Jesse Jackson can go head with all that African American foolishness.

If I'm "African American" just because of my epidermis, then what is she:

IMHO the basis of our unity cant be race because race isn't real.

Shout to Slim Charles but I aint going to war on a lie.

Biology is real.

Character is real.

Ethnicity is real.

Race is a social construct.

I hang around people with good character and if I had my way they'd be all colors, but unfortunately the culture of the county that I live in makes this more difficult than it should be.

Either that or I need to get out more.

Charlize Theron is NOT African, she is a national of South Africa. Ethnically she is European.

Its really not that hard to understand.

Yea as i've gotten older the idea that we didn't exist outside of Africa in large numbers before slavery just doesn't sit the same with me

My issue is this, yes before slavery we did exist outside of Africa. There is no disputing that (Moors, Olmecs, etc).. My issue is when those on this side of the Earth (Americas) are claiming they were not a product of the slave trade and/or want to distance themselves from Africa as much as possible. My best estimate is that 95% of us were products of the slave trade

If you admit that we existed outside of America why is it hard to believe that everyone in America is a direct descendent from Africa?

Over the years, I've moved away from this framing of China-Africa relationships because it mostly infantilizes the leaders of African nations. They can read the contracts they sign, they can evaluate their economic impact on the local populations/economies, and they can choose to not sign the paperwork and find other trade partners. They're not pure idiots who are being taken advantage of by cunning foreigners, they are complicit in fleecing the countries they lead.

The other thing that framing doesn't address is that when the choice of trade partner is between the West and China, the local populations will tell you that they'd rather deal with the Chinese. The reality is that regular person on the continent isn't mad that China invests in infrastructure projects; they're mad at their leaders for selling them down the river by not enforcing certain clauses that would promote the transfer of technology and job opportunities, but none of that pisses them off more than watching their governments enter agreements with former colonial powers.

my problems and frustrations with my government shouldn’t be a license to me to then take it out on say a Chinese construction worker
Exactly.

He's a peon, just like most of us, driven to where he is by circumstances and hunger, but it's hard to get that point across when locals see a random foreign worker as the only reason why they don't have a job.
