Black Culture Discussion Thread

Black people: folks saying that we should dismantle the concept of "nuclear family" shouldn't scare you because we've mostly practiced non nuclear, village style family structure the whole time:

▪️Cousins that are like siblings
▪️Grandmothers watching and raising people
▪️Aunts and Uncles that are not distant and are more like additional parents
▪️"Play cousins" and Aunts and Uncles that are not related by blood, but have been grandfathered in
▪️People of the community that took care of neighborhood children that weren't related to them

Slavery, Black codes, Joe Turner, Jim Crow, Intra-nation Immigration, "the war in drugs," and Mass incarceration have all had an impact on Black families, no doubt. However, part of the reason why Black families survived is not because we were once nuclear families that adapted to the ways systems would try to disband our families - our families survived because communal aspects of family have always been ours, even before colonialism and chattel slavery.

We didn't have to learn something that was foreign to us, what we already practiced helped us survive, it shielded our kinship bonds as much as possible.

The concept of "nuclear" families, families that exalt "man, woman, and child" or "mother, father, and child" above all are isolating, individualist colonial concepts.

Part of the reason some folks sensationalize Black families as in a state of supposed hyper-dysfunction is because they're married to assimilation; they've been striving for a family structure that's never been ours.

The one I posted that layziegunts layziegunts was from a Private FB page. I saw that after the fact.

The one I just posted is showing up. I checked it from an Incognito Tab before I posted it to make sure.

Thoughts on black women who use #blackgirlmagic, #blackouttuesday and other pro black talk but actually date white guys or exclusively date other non black guys?

I know a few that do everything black but tend to not date black guys rather it be their upbringing or location, I just find is completely suspect and self-hate. This can also be said about black men that do the reverse.

We just discussed interracials.

Start here.

Don’t know if y’all haven’t been paying attention to the whole NFAC stuff, but the leader or spokesperson is looking like an agent

Hes been exposed for lying about his DJing credentials. He was all lives matter a few years ago, he’s clicked in with Trump, among other things

All of that combined with everything else from how they have seemingly came out of nowhere makes it seem agent-ish

NFAC / "Grand Master" Jay = Public Enemy if Professor Griff and Chuck D switched places.
 I was cleaning. The host saying some very Uncle Tom stuff. Very ignorant episode all around though. Sounded like an 80’s convo happening in 2004.

Been just getting into cycling lately and it's a heavy white male dominated sport and I believe it's systemically so just like baseball. Hi price point of entry and defunding inner city programs and parks etc. The things I've seen dudes do on bikes in the hood I think there's a legit fear of once we get going. Like Major Taylor came out the gate kicking *** so they had to shut that down, just like you don't really see black Americans in baseball like that after the early dominance.

I know they fear this dude

Biking is also I very good outlet to relieve stress & hardship. I think I was depressed in back 2015 & I just use to bike around for miles & hours listening to my thoughts & music. Very therapeutic, especially those late/early morning rides.

They did the same to Black Jockeys

The Kentucky Derby’s Forgotten Black Jockeys
In fact, 13 of the 15 riders in that first Kentucky Derby were African-Americans. In the years following the Civil War, black jockeys dominated horse racing at a time when it was America’s most popular sport. African-American riders were the first black sports superstars in the United States, and they won 15 of the first 28 runnings of the Kentucky Derby.

Emboldened by the societal changes, resentful white jockeys at northern raceways conspired to force blacks off the track, in some cases literally. During the 1900 racing season, white jockeys in New York warned trainers and owners not to mount any black riders if they expected to win. They carried out their threats by boxing in black jockeys and riding them into—and sometimes over—the rails. In a cruel irony, free sons of former slaves felt the sting of whips directed their ways during races. Race officials looked the other way. Owners realized that black riders had little chance of winning given the interference. Even Willie Simms, the only African-American jockey to win all three of the Triple Crown events, had to beg for a mount.
