This is not a stereotype because i am not using the actions of a few to make a general statement about all black people. i never said all black people do this, but to sit up and act like this dumb stuff don't happen in our community is naive. While other races do fight and booty shake i want to focus on "us" first, make sure we got our selves together before you can help someone else.
i was replying to the OP
you said "we got ****y bet"
no, white people have ****y bet
"we on youtube fighting and shaking booty"
again, black children aren't the ONLY ones youtube fighting and booty shaking,
so again, i ask, why are you singling out black people?
eNPHAN....
- i have a question. BET from what i remember claims ignorance when the content of their programming comes into question. claiming they show what they think we want to see. have you seen BET-J?
- seen the difference in advertising?
**credit counseling commercials vs. investing
**ring-tone commercials vs. jazz festival commercials
- the difference in programming?
**soul sessions
**urban cuisine
**my two cents
- BET-J is what BET used to be for those that havent seen it. i just dont understand why they play dumb like they dont know what they're showing when you can clearly see there is a difference and they know it....
- dont mean anything by it, it's just something i dont understand. i mean, you could take everything off BET-J and put it on BET and the same folks would tune in just the same....right?
yeah, i actually have seen BET-J
and it seems more programmed towards the older, upper-middle class black population.....
light jazz and ++#%..
i mean, that's cool...
but at the same time, naw,
they couldn't replace BET with BET-J, because BET-J is a niche market....how many affluent, upper-class people watch TV religiously, now, how many of them are black and listen to light jazz?
BET is a cash cow because they make a fortune selling a stereotype of black culture, pre-packaged, to a 12-24, suburban, white audience...
homie, i can't remember the last time i even WATCHED BET....let alone a show like rap city or whatnot...
i'm not exactly sure what the question was, though...
- i guess my question is why do they play dumb like they dont know what they're doing? why do they act like this is the only thing black folks care towatch, when they clearly have another market they are catering to? i just wanted to hear your take on it. ive asked about BET-J before on NT and got no realresponses, figured id get one from you though.
- its hard for me to agree that BET-J's programming wouldnt work on BET. while i do agree thier aim is for a niche market, the current programming on BET-Jis almost a carbon copy of the BET that everyone loved so much.......if it worked then why not now? the only difference i see is the absense of a hiphop themedshow on BET-J. other than that they are almost identical (as far as programming).
- im also a firm believer that people watch whatever you put in front of them. so i have a real problem with the 'it wont work' off the basis of thecountless families/black businesses/and black barbershops i grew up around that kept the TV glued to BET. it wasnt until they started airing this crap the inoticed people turning the station.
- i dont recall anyone ever complaining about Carribean Rythyms, Tavis Smiley, BET NEWS, Video Soul, Midnight Love, Planet Groove, Teen Summit, VideoVibrations, or Video LP. i cant say the same about almost anything currently airing on BET. if those shows were bringing the dollars in before why cant showswith similar themes bring in those same dollars? i firmly believe BET can still be a cash cow (with different programming) because black folks will tune inregardless like they always have......
- from what you said about BET-J it sounds like you havent actually sat down and watched any full programs on it (if im wrong forgive me). its notall jazz. BET had commentary from Tavis Smiley and BET NEWS. BET-J has a social/current events debate show called 'My TwoCents'. BET-J also has a show very similar to Video Soul (without the host) now called 'Soul Sessions' (primarily neo-soul, acid jazz, and hiphop).

i agree, BET J is a much more acceptable form of prepackaged black culture, but like you said yourself, it's quite niche-#%+....
i mean, i would LOVE to have BET J do well and overtake minstrel BET, but we know why that wont happen...
what do you mean, WHY they try to play it off?
lol, why do they try to play off racism?
why do they try to play off prejudice?
why do they try to play off the impact of slavery?
why do they try to play off the widepread systematic oppression?
i mean, the answer is the same for all those questions...

- i dont really think its a niche market, i was really just using your words. i mean, i agree, it is a niche market to an extent. but i also agree that same niche market worked for the masses before (negating it being a niche market), so it could still work today. i mean what are the die hard BET watchers going to do?....turn the channel? feel me?
- i know......the "why they play it off", is a loaded rhetorical question. i was just asking for the sake of conversation. i was really just looking for someone mature enough to brainstorm with on the subject. thanks.....
lol, i aint meanin to come off as a +!#!...
i mean, a niche market CAN work, if you don't alienate anyone in your niche...
right now, they cater to affluent, middle to upper-middle class black people...
nothing for the tween, teen, young adult, adult, 30 somethings, nothing for them...
you think they're gonna add some upstanding rap program? some after-school, teen-special type $*@+?
i think BET J is so good because it's totally void of BET programming...
like the smart $*@+ goes there, the dumb $*@+ goes to BET
i dunno....they hide it because, noone wants to be called out for being racist...
they wanna still live tho...
they want black peopel to tune in and spend their money with their advertisers, etc.
how is a company gonna do that, openly admitting they pre-package stereotypes of black culture for their white, suburban market?
that's like a cigarette company openly admitting cigarettes are ba--- oh..
-i know.....but still. i mean they could...and i stress could'vecome up with some polite PR way of saying they're catering to the dumbasses with BET. i mean how does the Spike channel tip toe around who they cater to?*opps* did i just say that out loud?
- however i disagree that BET-J has nothing for the adult or 30 somethings........once again bruh you gotta tune into Soul Sessions, it comes on back to backfor about 5 hours on weekends (from Musiq to Charles Hamilton, Jill Scott to Gym Class Heroes, Dap Kings to Nas and Jay-Z.....its all there).
