still haven't done anything in WC to surpass THE ronaldo yet...........i'll wait till summer.
If we're going by World Cups, then I guess Messi isn't better than Cannavaro, Romario and Mario Kempes either. He needs to win a World Cup to get to the very elite: Pele, Maradona, Zidane and maybe Beckenbauer, but someone winning the World Cup isn't automatically better than someone who hasn't won a World Cup, disregarding the details.
Ronaldo was a very, very EFFICIENT striker, but Messi is both efficient and does things with the ball that drop your jaw.
Well, Messi is doing a lot to make us forget. He has 40 goals in Barca now, he already won a FIFA player of the year award and is the favorite to repeat, not to mention that he led his league to win the Champions League and his team is the favorite to win the tournament again this year, something that hasn't been done. As for the World Cup, Ronaldo played on a deeper squad, something that Messi really can't do much about. But then again maybe he can, as can be seen in this game where he single-handedly is carrying his team to victory, not his first time for Barca this season BTW. I have Brazil or Spain winning the WC, but the way Messi is playing right now, I would never say that his team is not a contender.
Portugal is a deeper squad than argentina? I dont know about that bud. The reason why messi doesnt shine for Argentina like he does at Barca has nothing to do with the players imo but just about the pace that they play. I think people fail to realize how fast barca can play the ball and with players like xavi, iniesta, keita, alves delivering the ball its damn near impossible not to score and shine. Argentina i feel can do the same %$# but Maradona is just too stubborn to realize he isnt utilizing his players to the maximum
I take nothing away from either player. Both are great. What I saw Ronaldo do the EPL imo is greater than what was done in la liga just because i feel epl is a stronger league. However its not messi's fault the competition is not as good. What Messi is doing is magical but scoring 20 something goals in 18 games isnt bad either. Just not superior at the moment.
Inter vs Barca. HMM lets see if lucio gives messi that kinda space in the middle. I wonder if zlatan or eto'o will show up.

EVER.
If he can keep this up for another 5-years or so then he may be considered the best hands down. He's already accomplished everything at the club level (this is his 3rd time going to the UCL semis and he's only 22)...he just needs international success to cement himself amongst Pele and Maradona.
We are witnessing a very very special player.
It wont be easy for Messi to obliterate the competition for several reasons. Argentina's national team aren't as good as Barca. Messi may be used in a different role. Each opponent will try to physically prevent Messi from inflicting any damage on them. Messi will be heavily marked by each opponent. What we may end up seeing happen is Messi being used as a 'decoy' by Maradona. Maybe he gets used in the middle of the pitch in hopes that 3-4 defenders gravitate to him each time he touches the ball which opens up space for the rest of his team mates. It's not that easy to dominate at the WC...maybe only a few guys have done it in history...the last to do it was Ronaldo in 2002 and before that it was Maradona in 1986. So if Messi can dominate, then he will join some very elite company. Personally I'm going to keep expectations low because to dominate in this sport is extremely difficult. However, this is a team game and Messi may have to adjust to a different role in the WC in order to achieve the team's goals.Originally Posted by APLX2

What do we call him if he obliterates the competition and wins the world cup? Best ever? Surely the best of this generation.
Yeah...because the Barca system is the reason he dominated the 2005 U-20 WC and helped him win the 2008 Olympic gold.Originally Posted by ERASCISM
Messi is a product of Barca's system. He's a great player, but the system makes him look even better. They are a well-oiled machine and their youth system is second to none.
He didn't even need to break a sweat for any of his goals today.

He always knows who is around him and his decision making is amazing. I think that anyone who plays the sport can learn a lot just by watching him play...just watch how many times a match he'll turn his neck and look around him before calling for a pass...just look at him directing his team mates before Barca make an attacking run.
Edit: And to the "Messi must perform well in this WC to go down as a great player"...I suggest you chill just a little bit. Messi is only 22...Ronaldo, Zidane, Maradona all won the WC at the tender age of 26. Messi hasn't even hit his prime yet.

i totally agree he's the best right now but while you tell others to chill, you should chill as well that he will reach Pele/Mardonnas level if he continues for another 5+ years, anything could happen......................i'm just saying
like you said lets just expect less and appreciate the magician while he plays out his career, he can very well surpass Maradonna but lets just wait.

These two young starts will have to step up for me toconsider them elite. In the euros in portugal to me Ronaldo choked espon that opportunity in the final vs greece. messi showed class in theu20 but lets be real, its the u20 not the euro cup or WC. (which to meare of higher talent/competiton). lets see what goes on this summer. Ifmaradonna shows some good tactics and Ronaldo actually has a decentforward to work with(Almeida Eh/ Liedson even worse), these guys canstep up. Putting them in the category of pele/zidane/ronaldo/romarioetc etc is just stupid.
-Portugal are now in their golden era? They barely qualified for the WC. Their golden era was led by Figo.
-Argentina have plenty of leadership. Samuel, Zanetti, Veron, etc are all leaders.
-You dont consider Ronaldo and Messi to be elite right now? The two best players in the planet aren't elite? Two guys who have each won plenty of awards including domestic titles, European titles, WPOYs aren't elite? Both of them are already two of the best to have ever played the game. Whatever they accomplish from now on will only add to their legacies.
-Ronaldo did not 'choke' in Euro 2004. Ronaldo was 19-YEARS-OLD back then. What did you expect him to do?
-You're right that the U20 WC is not at the same level as other events but I pointed it out as an example of Messi's success away from Barcelona. The 2008 Olympics is another example.
-Putting them in the same category is not stupid. When you have footballers/analysts far more knowledgeable than you or I making the comparisons then you realize this is a very valid discussion.
