Don Nelson talks, Part 1: "We'll try to accommodate (Jackson's trade request) if it's the right thing for the team"
Don Nelson was fairly serene today at his pre-camp media session, taking on all questions without a bubble of acrimony-a far cry from the tense end of last season.

This is the first part of the long session, with six reporters, and the meaty part of this is Nelson talking about Stephen Jackson's recent trade request.

Nelson said he approached Jackson LAST YEAR to see if Jackson might want to be traded, knowing that many losses were coming with the rebuilding project, so he wasn't too surprised by Jackson's feelings now.

And he said he'd try to accommodate Jackson, but only if it works for the Warriors-tellingly, Nelson said the trade of Al Harrington, under similar circumstances last year, did not work out well and he wishes he didn't do it.

Oh, it's also telling because it's Nelson all but confirming that he's the real GM. He asked Jackson if he wanted to be traded last year, with Chris Mullin still around, and he's running the trade show now, with Larry Riley supposedly installed as the GM.

MORE TO COME….

-DON NELSON media session, transcript Part 1/

-Intro: Fire away.

-Q: As you head into camp, do you think this team is good enough?

-NELSON: Good enough?

-Q: Good enough to be in the playoffs?

-NELSON: (Laughs). I don't know. It'll work itself out. I will say that we've dedicated ourselves to building a team here. I feel very good about what we're doing. I really like our young players and think we're doing it the right way.

I've built teams a lot of times, here several times, and I really like what we're doing. I feel… I'm excited about the young players. We've got eight guys 24 and under. And they'll take us as far as we'll go.

-Q: So what stage are you in now in this building process?

-NELSON: We're right on schedule. Depends on their maturity. I'd say they're all on schedule, you know. They're going to get better as they go along and some of them are going a little faster than others. But I think they're all doing just real well.

-Q: This team year after year says 'we're young.' Probably said it 15 straight years. Why is this time any different?

-NELSON: Probably isn't. Rebuilding is rebuilding.

-Q: 14 of those times the Warriors didn't make the playoffs.

-NELSON: Well, you know, I missed a few of them. I'm just saying where we're at right now. We're young, we're building what I think is going to be a real good team. And hopefully once… if we can do it the right way, we'll be good for a long time.

That's my hope.

-Q: When you talk about being on schedule, what is the schedule?

-NELSON: I don't know that you can have a schedule. It really depends on them, how they come along, the different positions that we've been fortunate enough to do well with, they're all doing well. They're developing nicely. Our staff's done a great job.

Can't hurry it. It's just going to be what it is. Don't want to sugar-coat it. I think we're going to be exciting. I'm really looking forward to coaching these guys. They'll be well-coached, they'll play the game the right way. They're good guys. They're just young. But I really like the team.

-Q: Is it reasonable to expect this team to be in the playoffs or would that be a surprise?

-NELSON: I don't know. They'll determine that as we go.

-Q: Where's the improvement coming from, because essentially it's the same team you had last year?

-NELSON: Well, I would say Monta is a pretty big part of what we're doing. He wasn't here for most of the season.

-Q: How much can you expect out of Randolph-can you say he's going to be a 40-minute guy?

-NELSON: 40 minutes? Hopefully nobody's going to be a 40-minute man. But no, hopefully he's… again, we'll give him all we can handle.

-Q: How good can he be this year?

-NELSON: This is his second year coming up. So I don't think that you'll see the finished product, probably, for another couple years. But he's going to get better every year. He's got all the potential in the world.

And now his work ethic's as good as anybody on the team. You know, he and Morrow are my hardest workers right now.

And he was about the laziest rookie I ever had last year. But he's learned his lesson and he's developed and I don't have that problem with him. He's been in the gym all summer. So I feel good about that.

His body, he's grown an inch. He's 7-feet now. Just a real good looking player.

-Q: Randolph mentioned that you visited his mom and dad, had dinner with them in Dallas… Can you elaborate on that?

-NELSON: It's not something that is an exception. I choose not to talk about private conversations and what we do and what we don't do. But it's something a coach does.

-Q: Doesn't seem like what an NBA coach normally does-a pro coach reach out to a player's mom and dad?

-NELSON: I do that.

-Q: Have you spoken to Stephen Jackson in the last few weeks?

-NELSON: I have not. Not for a couple weeks.

-Q: Do you expect Jackson here for camp, 100%, no problems?

-NELSON: Yeah.

-Q: Will you meet with him before camp?

-NELSON: I'm not going to have a special meeting with him, but I imagine we'll talk, have a conversation, sure.

-Q: Is there something you want to hear from him?

-NELSON: No, I understand Jack.

-Q: That seems like a big thing that Jackson did, maybe could use some explanation from him, at least to the fans, saying he wants out…

-NELSON: You know, it may have been a mistake in the way that he did it. But as far as the request goes, I understand his request. I'm not angry at him. It's very, very difficult for a veteran player to be involved in a rebuilding process.

I had a conversation last year with him when Monta went down, that we could be in for a hard year and is he ready for it and maybe it would be better to think about moving him, if that's what he would desire to do.

Took a year, but I guess he's decided. I don't think he did it the right way. But anyway, it is what it is and I'm not angry at him. I understand.

And we'll try to accommodate him if it works out that it's the right thing for the team. If it's not, why then, he'll be here.

-Q: Jackson got the extension, then a year later wants out…

-NELSON: You know, he's disappointed some people around here, the way that he did it. If… you can ask him those questions.

-Q: So your conversation with him last year… was that in line with the extension talks? Did you want to know what his mindset was before the extension was formally offered and signed?

-NELSON: I don't know if he had signed it… when we had the conversation, if he had signed that extension or not. I can't remember. It was early in the season.

-Q: But was that part of your thinking-you wanted to know where he was at before the deal was done?

-NELSON: No, no. It was just that, it might be better for him, if he's going to have trouble dealing with the losses that come with rebuilding, that if it was better for him to maybe think about moving to a contending team, that we would look at that. That was my conversation.

-Q: And his answer at that point was, 'I want to stay'?

-NELSON: Umm. I don't think there was an answer. It was just that he thought about it. I don't think we ever had an answer, probably.

-Q: So you brought it up to him first…

-NELSON: Last year, I brought it up, yeah.

-Q: When you say you're going to try to accommodate his trade request, does that mean you want to trade him or does it mean you really don't want to?

-NELSON: No, it means that if it's good for the team, we'll look at it. Doesn't have anything to do with Jack or the request. But we'll accommodate him if we can. If it's good for him and it's good for us, we would certainly look at it.

-Q: He plays a lot of roles on this team-defensively, in the locker room-how hard would it be to give him away?

-NELSON: He's a good player. Well, we wouldn't give him away.

-Q: What would you need back?

-NELSON: I don't know.

-Q: When you had the Harrington situation, you said you needed a main rotation guy back in the deal…

-NELSON: If you look at the Harrington situation, if I had it to do over again, I probably would've just kept him and then he would've become a free agent, we could've used his money to sign another player, whatever.

As it was, I thought we got a pretty good player for him. But when Monta came back, then there was an overload at that position. So it didn't work out as well when Monta came back before when Monta was here. So it was a short-term kind of a deal.

Looking back at that, I probably should've just have kept him. Then at the end of the year, he could've done what he wanted. We would've had the money to sign another player.

-Q: Do you worry about Jackson being an issue in the locker room?

-NELSON: No. I legitimately love Jack. We're good friends. I understand him. I think I do. He's hard to understand all the time. But we get along fine. We have a good relationship. I'll be able to coach him, it's not a problem.

-Q: The comments didn't surprise you, it was the way he did it…

-NELSON: Yeah, it was the way he did it.

-Q: You told Marc Stein that Jackson was still your captain… Is he definitely the captain?

-NELSON: Yeah, sure. Doesn't have anything to do with being a captain or not. A guy that wants to be traded. He's my captain. Still a leader on the team.

-Q: Even if he wants to go?

-NELSON: Well, yeah, it has no bearing. He's a leader. He's a leader either way. If he's here, he's going to try the best he can, to do what we want, and to win games. It's not going to affect his performance, as far as I'm concerned.

-Q: When you got Jamal Crawford, you said you thought he and Monta would be a great pairing. It didn't work that way. What's different about pairing Stephen Curry with Monta?

-NELSON: We don't know that yet, either. They've got to prove that. But also, we were lucky enough to draft Curry. That's a player that we coveted. So that changed. That made us even more crowded there. You can't have too many players.

Obviously Belinelli was a victim of that, too. We like Bell. He's coming a long very nicely. But we've got I think what's going to be a special player some day.

-Q: Do you look at Curry as a starter?

-NELSON: I don't know that.

-Q: Who's you starting point guard?

-NELSON: I don't know that. It'll all be determined as we go along.

-Q: Monta going to get a good look at that spot?

-NELSON: Oh Monta will be a starter.

-Q: At the point?

-NELSON: I don't know that. What I do is we're going to be very small in the backcourt this year. Our 1s and 2s are going to be small, so we'll have to compensate defensively for some of those things.

And do some scheming defensively to help cover that.

-Q: Morrow fits in that? He's not too small.

-NELSON: Morrow's 6-5. Not a big 2-guard.

-Q: You said last year in an ideal world you'd play Jackson at the 2.

-NELSON: We're not going to do that any more because of my draft pick. So now we're just going to be small there. That's what we'll be. Jack will be a 3.

-Q: Can you shed any light on how close you came to getting Stoudemire on draft night or afterwards?

-NELSON: You can talk to Larry about that.

-Q: You weren't involved?

-NELSON: I didn't say that. You can talk to Larry about that.

-Q: What would a big-scoring big man do for this team? Is that on the radar for you?

-NELSON: But as you know, there's more complications involved in those kinds of things that I'm not allowed to talk about, anyway. It's not just as simple as you try to make it.

I'm very content with taking what we have and building on it. I think that's what this franchise should do. I like our young guys. I think they're going… if they just move along together… we've got eight guys that, if they move together in just a natural process of getting better, I think this team could really be a nice team.

-Q: Would having a disgruntled veteran mess up that process?

-NELSON: I don't think Jack will affect anything. You know, Jack's a competitor. He's going to compete. He's going to be Jack. And I can deal with Jack. I can coach Jack.

maybe a lineup of:
PG: Monta
SG: SJax
SF: AR (he has the ball handling to do it)
PF: beans
C: Curry
hm. its eh but who knows, maybe he'll have a breakout year
Curry declares himself the rookie to beat
OAKLAND, Calif. - Stephen Curry(notes)knows Golden State Warriors coach Don Nelson is famously tough onrookies. Curry also knows his college exploits will only make him a target for NBA veterans hungry to beat up on a wispy 21-year-old. And, yes, he understandsthat adjusting to life in the league far away from the only home he's ever known carries its own pressure.

But Stephen Curry also doesn't care.

"I think I will be Rookie of the Year," he said. "I have that kind of confidence in myself. … I'm not afraid to say it."

Those are high expectations for someone who shot only 32.5 percent for the Warriors' summer league team. Curry, however, has never lacked forself-esteem. As the son of former NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry, he guided Davidson to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1969.Curry then led the nation in scoring as a junior before Golden State took him with the seventh pick in the draft.

In an effort to improve his game, Curry spent the offseason traveling the country with trainer Idan Ravin to practice against some of the league's eliteplayers, including Chris Paul(notes), Carmelo Anthony(notes)and Joe Johnson(notes).

"If you want to be the best," Dell Curry said, "you have to work out and train with the best."

Stephen Curry transitioned to point guard during his junior season at Davidson, so his workouts with Paul held the greatest value. Paul mentored him on hismoves and decision-making.

"It's more of just a feel when you're in the game," Curry said. "He knows how to be effective on the court with the dribble, which iswhat I'm trying to learn now, using ball screens and all that kind of stuff."

While Curry is confident he can make an immediate impact, he knows there will be some challenges awaiting him with the Warriors. Nelson usually isn'tgenerous with playing time for rookies. Curry talked to Anthony Randolph(notes)and Anthony Morrow(notes)about their ups and downs last season.

"They say it was tough, but if [Nelson] is not being tough on you then you have problems because he doesn't see potential in you," Curry said."If he's out there pushing you as much as he can, making it tough on you in practice trying to get the best out of you then that's a good sign. Ifyou take [criticism] well and work on your game, than your time will come."

The good news for Curry is Nelson has already quietly compared him to Steve Nash(notes). The Warriors' run-and-gun offense also seems tailor-made for him. The question: Will there be room for bothCurry and Monta Ellis(notes), Golden State's other talented, young combo guard?

Already, there has been speculation Ellis isn't happy about the addition of another guard. Warriors officials have denied that's the case, butneither Ellis nor Stephen Jackson(notes), Golden State's disgruntled team captain, has reached out to Curry since he was drafted. Still, Curry ishopeful he and Ellis can co-exist and benefit each other.

"We both offer something to the team," Curry said. "He's proven that. I hope to prove that this year. It will be a good combo to have. Itwill be pretty explosive."

And if they are? Eight months from now, Curry thinks you'll be calling him Rookie of the Year.

"I think I will be Rookie of the Year," he said. "I have that kind of confidence in myself. … I'm not afraid to say it."

Morrow gets shafted again. They include Claxton, but not Morrow on 2k10's Warriors' roster...
