Lighter colors like khaki and light gray. Fabric is also as important though.

I'm convinced you dress far better than any of us.....you just won't let us see
85% of the time I'm in professional menswear. 5% would be in Gym or active clothing and the other 10% are reserved for weekends. My friends from my old neighborhood where I grew up call me a WASP all the time. Hell, if you see me on the weekends you'd think I was some Indian guy who got lost in a Brooks Brothers catalog

I share the same beliefs as you. Unfortunately, I buy all the stuff I buy because of work. One of the downsides of Front Office I suppose.
I'm starting to feel the same way you are. A few years I thought the only way to get a nice suit was through bespoke, but over the years I've come to realize that there are many alternatives out there that are just as nice. Although, I do think every man should at least have 1 or 2 really nice, full-canvassed suits that fits them perfectly.
If you want another alternative to J.Crew, check out Bonobos. They have some nice summer suits on sale and their clothes aren't so bad either. It's kind of like a business casual version of J.Crew.
Heard from rumblings about this in my office a few weeks ago. Is it worth checking out?

I'm either in Hugo Boss, To Boot Bew York, or AE. Together I paid under $20
You need to tell me where you're finding all this stuff. I tried looking for thrift shops in NYC and most of them are in Brooklyn or Super Uptown (Washington Heights).

I agree and disagree, while I do buy most of my stuff for work, I do not believe you have to wear those brands to fit in the office but I recognize that there is sort of a "uniform" in most settings.
All of my dress shoes are ~$250 from AE, my shirts are ~$80 from Kamukara and my suits are from a former colleague who started his own custom clothing shop so he provides me a great F&F discount. While I was in IB, I did not stick out like a sore thumb by wearing this, I work at a hedge fund now so it's a lot more casual and I typically wear a dress shirt, trousers and AE loafers
On your point on thrift shops in NYC, there are a few in the East Village that sometimes have gems, but most mostly in non-popular sizes

I honestly think a pair of Kenneth Cole sneakers would do the trick for you. They have low profile sneakers that are pretty inexpensive. I'm married now, but when I was scouring the clubs looking for women they never asked what brand shoe I was in. But as long as you are stylish but not too trendy you should be fine. Also, If you can thrift/e-thrift a pair of really nice shoes I say go for it. With your budget around $60 to $80 would do the trick.

It's really tough to explain or reason unless you're in the environment. It's basically a world where your appearance does mean a lot and goes a long way, especially when you have a lot of interaction with clients are constantly in meetings 2-3 times a day.
You're right though. I don't have to a specific brand of clothing, but it's more along the lines of office culture and company reputation.

Just spent suit money on a pair of sneakers I've been searching for in my size for a while 
Spent a good amount on new jeans and alterations recently as well. I'm not even entertaining the thought of buying another pair of sneakers unless they are for the gym/basketball. Trimmed my sneaker rotation down a lot to focus on quality instead of quantity and I have it exactly how I want it to be right now. I don't know if I will slow down on buying jeans or not, doesn't look likely . Going to try to start focusing my spending on dress shoes, boots, and suits...possibly a leather jacket.

Yep. They stopped taking order. Drew no longer has interest in the field and is focusing on his restaurants. He tried selling the business but didn't land a deal he liked so TOJ is shutting down for now.
Hank: Armoury is top end stuff. It caters to the top tier of Hong Kong folks and then came to the states. I know they have a lot of backing financially and that really separates them from the other niche stores. I would probably never shop there since I have no desire to own $5k suits and bespoke shoes. The brand does get approval from even the most uptight SF dudes so I'm sure you can't go wrong.
Re: buying clothes. I've amassed a good wardrobe since 2009 or so. I would rather use the money to travel or save up. I no longer care much if my jacket is fully canvassed or half. And yes I've heard of Bonobo.

I really regret not getting a DR from TOJ.
I own 3 Schott perfectos, but they just don't look as clean as a TOJ. I was thinking of removing the epaulets/collar snaps and having a leather specialist patch up the holes they'll leave.

I've BEEN saying this. Still have not even bought a single suit since being employed (as an intern at least) in 2009. Eventually I plan to work for myself and will be wearing my casual clothes daily any way. Until then I only need a few suits to get me by. I also want two more pairs of dress shoes (one black; one dark drown) since I wear my walnut strands or beeswax DB daily.

yes, every week or so the items that didn't sell will be reduced further. Most of the good stuff gets scooped up right away though

and you got the lux sneakers. I'm 28, turning 29 next year. I'm saving up for major events, ie marriage and relocation or termination. It's an eye opener for me to see so many folks at my firm getting canned in order to save $300 M. Gonna be hard for those without college degrees getting comparable jobs that pay $200k annually.
Plus my closet is near darn full too
