Dressing Better Vol 2.0

Yea I'd go down one size. Honestly, Tom's are versatile, depending on the color, texture/fabric and what you wear it with. I took my brown pair on the cruise with me and wore it with everything from jeans to shorts, to khaki chinos with a navy blazer.
thank you sir.

I figured why not give them a try, everyone saying how comfortable they are finally won me over

considering buying my 1st pair of Toms, to have something to slip on quickly...what do you guys think of these as a "dressing better" alternative with jeans etc? Go a half size down too?

If you want a leather option, don't count out Sperrys and Driving loafers.

If anyone does end up ordering from them be sure to post in here.
Been looking for a pair of double monks that I can afford

Hello,

I'm thinking I want to jump on the redwing Wabasha boot from J. Crew while during this 30% off business. Any recommendations on sizing?

shipping is another 35 euro....and you gotta hope you don't hit any customs feels.
Carlin, why not just order the AE Mora's man?
The Mora was discontinued I believe.  I dont really like the shape of their current double monk,  the Neumora, but I may get it in the end if I dont find anything else.

I picked up my first pair of gio's today; thanks whoever suggested (think it was wsj). Anywho, i opted for the regular pair which is already very slim and tts. I did try the skinny's, but boy, those are definitely not tts. I have some nudies and they are definitely a better fit than the skinny's unis carries. I do agree that the quality of these pants are top notch; noticed it the second i put them on. These need a guaranteed hem for average and below avg height dudes.

I can do picture comparisons with alpha khakis if anyone's interested; the difference in quality is very very noticeable.

Here's the measurements a rep gave me before i headed to the store (i did find the regulars to be tts, but the skinnys are not):

Regular Gio size 30
Waist (measured around waistband - outside of fabric): 32"
Thigh (measured 1" below crotch seam): 24"
Knee (measured 14" below crotch seam): 16"
Leg opening: 14.75"
Inseam: 35"

Regular Gio size 31
Waist: 33
Thigh: 24.5
Knee (14" below crotch): 16.25
Leg opening: 15

Regular Gio size 32

Serg, Aren't you going a little overboard. Let me link you to this article.

I think if you are concerned about price, you might want to reconsider your purchases. You can easily combine 2-3 of your mid to lower range purchases and buy a nice pair of AE's or even better shoes. Quality over Quantity my friend. Its OK to have a few pairs of beaters or everyday work shoes. But you seem to be buying a bunch of the same, with no increase in quality.

^ Good reminder

How often do AE's go under retail? I only have 1 pair of Players that I found at NR for $135.

I wanted the Strands for $225 at the Nordstrom yearly sale, but my size sold out quick.

Jason, it's not about the price, never has been, my hesitation with the shoes for example posted by Adrian is that I don't know the quality of them because no one is familiar with them. I've read that article as well from Put This On, honestly it's the sneakerhead in me. Do I need all these dress shoes? Nope but it's the sneakerhead in me that wants to have this variety of dress shoes. It's like I tell my wife and friends, I can say I'm done with sneakers but reality is I replaced it with dress shoes. The one shoe I want to buy that I have no problem dropping serious cash, but haven't found a last that I like, is a double monkstrap.

honestly i think you're doing it wrong. you should have a handful of high quality shoes that are versatile and durable enough to last you years. not a whole bunch of budget shoes just for variety's sake

^Lurk Styleforum, there are threads dedicated to each different shoe brand (Vass, Carmina, C&J, etc) people post their experiences in terms of quality, customer service, fit, etc

I can see where you're coming from. I'm still transitioning from sneakerhead to menswear but even now I'm very picky about my dress shoes and I like to buy quality over quantity, albeit within my budget. It's still hard for me to justify paying over $100 on a pair of dress shoes I wear once every few weeks when I'm still shelling out $200 on sneakers I can wear daily to work (small business with no dress code ftw!)

But back to you, I agree with what some others have brought up in that if your career as a professional/teacher/etc dictates that your wardrobe consist of those dressier shoes, quality over quantity sounds like the way to go.

That's your opinion, and I don't mean to sound like a jerk or come off like one but I like variety and I am selective about what I do buy and what brands, etc. although I do understand where you're coming from. It's not quantity over quality for me, it's a mix of quality and quantity. Another reason for why I won't spend a lot, yet, on a pair of shoes is that I work in NYC and shoes take a pounding in the city, I've gone through pairs of shoes because of this, from almost any tier of brand you can think of. I carry a heavy dress shoe rotation as well because of this, as I've actually cracked soles due to the amount of walking and condition of the streets in the city, from rubber to leather soles. Taking the subway, walking around hundreds of people who are not paying attention where they're walking, your shoes will take a beating, no matter the quality. But it goes back to at heart I'm a sneakerhead and I like variety. You guys have seen that almost all, if not all much shoes, arent gimmicky or the latest dress shoe craze out there.

Again, I appreciate and respect your opinion, but I don't think I'm doing it wrong, I just like variety. I have no probloem spending $200 or more on shoes, but I also have no problem finding a deal and jumping on that deal. I see it this way, you know there's people out there who would say the same thing about say, ties. Why buy a bunch of $10 ties, when you can buy 10 high quality ties ($100 plus), variety.

I do, but I usually get tired of the bickering that goes back and forth.

you are exemplifying my point. vibram soles, etc. won't crack on you. a well cared for pair of dress shoes could last decades with proper resoling etc. it's definitely up to you though. there is always room for beaters.
