...Im really lookin forward to this man, I hope to God we dont screwthis up...

Following up on that Knicks-Wizards rumor involving the fifth overall pick:

There have been recent conversations between the teams about players, mainly ones the Wizards are interested in onthe Knicks roster. But what may come as a surprise is that Wilson Chandler doesn't appear to be the main ingredient here. In fact, from multiple sourceswith knowledge of the Wizards' strategizing, they're the ones who have inquired about two former Wiz players, Larry Hughes and JaredJeffries.

The Knicks are all ears.

Washington tried to trade for Hughes (for Mike James and Etan Thomas) during the past season, when he was still with Chicago and they asked about Jeffriesbefore the trade deadline. Both were key members of the 2004-05 Washington team that reached the second round of the playoffs. Hughes and Gilbert Arenas were astrong backcourt and some within the Wizards braintrust feel they missed Jeffries more than they thought they would after he took that mid-level exceptionoffer sheet from Isiah Thomas in 2006. The Wizards feel they have a small window of opportunity with their core of Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison andwant to build a strong supporting cast of veterans to make a run.

The Knicks wouldn't mind shedding Hughes' contract, though it has one year left with a team-high $13.6M pricetag. They could consider th at sameJames/Thomas scenario because both players are also in expiring deals. James ($6.4M) is a shooter (and a Long Islander) whom the Knicks could use and the 6-10Thomas ($7.3M) provides size, grit and rebounding depth in the frontcourt.

Jeffries, of course, is the big one to move, with $6.4M next season and a critical $6.8M against the salary cap in 2010-11. The Knicks almost moved him tothe Kings at the trade deadline and, according to a source, recently were close to something with the Toronto Raptors that fell through when the Raps turned itdown.

And, aware that the Wizards aren't that excited about anything they see at No. 5, the Knicks too the opportunity ask about the pick. It may have beensuggested that Chandler is the only young asset the team could offer in return that may interest Ernie Grunfeld for the pick, but it was not something theKnicks offered. At this point, it doesn't appear to be anything more than a speculative scenario.

But that five-spot is valuable to the Knicks because, presumably, they would snatch Stephen Curry there before anyone else gets their grubby hands on him.But we're starting to get skeptical here, mainly because of Curry's quick about-face when it comes to workouts. Initially, after his workout with theKnicks, Curry's father said his son was shutting it down. Then within a day it was decided that he will, in fact, participate in more workouts.

Why the sudden change of mind? Did he not get the guarantee from the Knicks he had hoped to get? Perhaps without a guarantee at No. 8, Curry didn't wantto give up potential opportunity -- and money -- from interested teams in the top five. So off to Sacramento he went this weekend.
KNICKS POINTING AT RUBIO

By MARC BERMAN
The Knicks have not given up hope on Ricky Rubio and are still trying to interview the 18-year-old Spanish point guard phenom this week beforeThursday's NBA Draft, according to a source. Rubio will be in New York for the draft but hasn't worked out for teams.

Rubio visited Sacramento, but did not work out.

Rumors are circulating that Rubio could fall because of the complexity of his $6 million buyout and the Kings are no lock to take him at No. 4. Rubio hassued his Spanish club and a court hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. A Spanish source said he would not be surprised if Rubio starts the preseason inSpain.

If the Kings pass, Rubio, some people in the league predict, could fall as low as eight to the Knicks, who are trying to trade up for Stephen Curry or theSpaniard.

Agent Dan Fegan has dissuaded teams such as Memphis (No. 2) and Oklahoma City (No. 3) from taking Rubio, who wants to play for a big market team.

Curry, Memphis' Tyreke Evans and UCLA's Jrue Holiday are the three point guards the Knicks had targeted at No. 8, but Curry and Evans could well begone. Evans may be taken in the sixth spot by Minnesota, and Curry at No. 7 to Golden State. As already reported by The Post, Holiday will work out for asecond time with the Knicks today as their third PG choice. If he falls, Arizona power forward Jordan Hill is also in consideration.

The Knicks have also explored buying a second first-round pick late in the round since they have no 2010 first-rounder. In an interview with Indiana radio,Knicks president Donnie Walsh, who meets the media today, said: "You can get a good player well into the end of the first round."

If the Knicks can't move up to get Rubio or land Curry I would love to see them take Flynn @ 8...I think he will be a really good pro.
Donnie pointing to point guards
Frank Isola
June 22, 2009
Donnie Walsh said on Monday that the Knicks won't necessarily take a point guard in Thursday's NBA Draft and yet the team president talked exclusively about point guards.

He saved his strongest praise for Syracuse's Jonny Flynn, saying, "He's a great athlete. If you need a point guard, you can go with him".

Walsh also said of Memphis freshman Tyreke Evans: "He's powerful. He's got a great handle and if he has an opening, he's strong."

The two most interesting developments from Monday is that UCLA freshman Jrue Holiday was in town for his second workout. The Knicks either believe Holiday will be available at eight or perhaps they have a trade in the works - maybe with Sacramento at No. 4 - where they will swap picks.

The other development is Spanish guard Ricky Rubio, who should be the second overall pick even though his agent is telling Memphis (second pick) and Oklahoma City (No. 3) not to draft Rubio. It is unlikely that Rubio will fall to eight but the Knicks remain optimistic that they can trade up to get him. Of course, a deal for Rubio would have to include either Wilson Chandler or free agents to be David Lee and Nate Robinson.
June 22, 2009

Walsh on Rubio, two Currys and pre-draft smokescreens
Donnie Walsh didn't let anythingmajor slip Monday in terms of his pre-draft plans, although he did say he doesn't expect to meet with or work out Ricky Rubio, as somereported he might.

He did work out one-and-done UCLA point guard JrueHoliday again, so other members of his staff could see him _ a clear sign that Holiday could be a fall-back candidate if he can't getStephen Curry at No. 8 or trade up to get him.

He also raved about Jonny Flynn("He's a great athlete. If you need a point guard, you can go with him"), Tyreke Evans ("He's powerful. He's got agreat handle and if he has an opening, he's strong"), but said of Rubio, "I think there are other players on his level."

That seemed like his version of one of the things hediscussed Monday, how this is the time, with less than a week to go, that teams (and agents) put up smokescreens, if they haven't already.

Clearly, though, he's going to walk into the draftroom Thursday night with a plan to move up if he really wants Rubio, if he really wants Curry, if he really wants someone else _ potential trade scenarios tomove up to virtually every pick, with the exception of No. 1. They may not happen, they may not be accepted, but feel free to assume those are the two playerson whom he'd like to get his hands, all things being equal.

Hence the reports of conversations with Washington aboutmoving up to No. 5 _ and although we like his game better than most people, it would certainly be a coup if the Wiz would take back JaredJeffries.

We also hear that Memphis is so worried about Rubio notwanting to play there that the Griz could (as bottom-dwellers often do) panic and make a deal _ although the right thing to do would draft him, then deal himif he balks.

But there'll be a lot of stuff like this popping upthe next few days before Thursday night _ and usually what happens is the team set to pick No. 8 ends up picking eighth, and so on.

Perhaps the most interesting thing Walsh said Monday wasabout a visit he paid to Eddy Curry in Detroit recently, where the corpulent center has been working out.

"He's working very hard, he's losing weight,he's starting to get his body to look like an athlete's body again," Walsh said.

The Knicks' president also said that DaniloGallinari is just about ready to start basketball-related activities following his April back surgery. But if he's right about E-Curry, then the Knicks have an asset _ either on the floor or to trade and create more capspace.

How about this scenario guys Knicks pick Jordan Hill at 8 bc Curry and Rubio are gone.... then buy a late 1st rounder in the 22-27 range and get Lawson

I would be pretty happy with that
