Zhou Qi Reportedly in Houston to Train with Rockets

Per multiple sources, Houston Rockets 2016 draftee Zhou Qi is in Houston to train with the team in hopes of securing a contract for the 2017-2018 season.

The Houston Rockets’ decision to draft Yao Ming in 2002 was risky but turned out to be genius. Like many other teams who have drafted transcendent talent before, however, the Rockets will probably waste picks in the future trying to repeat their past success. In the 2016 draft, the team used its second round pick to claim Zhou Qi, an up-and-coming Chinese stretch big.

Zhou played for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers this past season in the Chinese Basketball Association, where he averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. The 7’2″ center had a soft shooting touch as well, connecting on 36% of his threes this year. Upon first glance, he seems like the kind of talent who could fit right alongside the Rockets right now. Indeed he does possess the basic skill set to succeed in today’s NBA, but he lacks the strength and physicality to be able to body up with the league’s average big man.

Fortunately for both parties, Zhou is in Houston to train with the Rockets, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Feigen. He hopes the workouts will lead to a contract offer for next season, and it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Now before anyone proclaims that Houston found the next Yao Ming, let me make it clear that Zhou is not that player. There’s a reason he was drafted a full 42 spots further down in the draft than his supposed predecessor. Barring an unforeseen stroke of luck, Zhou’s realistic ceiling is as a midlevel supporting cast center. Unlike Yao, he has little hope of ever seeing the Hall of Fame.

However, Red Nation can still look forward to watching Zhou’s development. Stretch bigs will be in high demand for the next few seasons, Houston is sitting pretty.

Rockets need to keep this up the second half. They need to brace themselves for a possible run, and just hold serve. They're feasting both outside and inside, and are only allowing the Spurs to get off one shot. Neeeeeeed that for a whole 'nother half

This is a joy to watch, trying to fade a home game this series

We need to self impose A fine for anybody that shoots with less than 5-8 seconds off the clock...unless were up 15+ and hit the previous shot lol

well we came out and played better than i ever could have hoped. glad we didn't pull a wizards and never let the spurs back into the game. hopefully we can carry the momentum to game 2 and steal another one.

This game could not have gone any better. Great way to immediately seize control of the series. Still would have loved to beat them by 50, but that's just being greedy  they really did well in every facet of the game, grabbing boards, contesting shots, hitting 3s, playing good defense in general. The effort was all over the place and it was steady from start to finish. They limited turnovers too. Total flip from what went on a lot during the OKC series. We forced the Spurs into one shot and that's it, then followed it up with scoring on the other end.

Props to Anderson and Ariza showing up offensively as well, and Capela for being dominant.

Nice to have Ariza, Capela, and Ryno show up.

Spurs going to adjust, Pop going to adjust. Game 2 is a whole new game and hopefully the Rockets come out the same way today as well as with a backup plan for when the Spurs run the Rockets off the line and their adjustments. Hell, Rockets ran OKC out the gym game 1 and every game after that went down to the wire.

Good point about okc game 1. Pop was asked if he was worried that there might be some carryover into game 2. He said there's a lot of things coaches worry about, but that's not one of them. They'll definitely adjust and come out ready to play game 2. Hope we're ready for them.

it's nice, but we also blew the thunder out in game 1 and they adjusted quickly. gotta be locked in for game 2!

And we're definitely not gonna be hittin shots like that. At least, I'm presuming we won't continue that tear.

Can't, but there's no reason why they can't continue to attack and eat in the paint like they have. I was mostly impressed by the defense more than anything. There were probably only three possessions out of the entire game where the Rockets were out-hustled for boards, and that was mostly due to LMA and Pau being giraffes.

Houston Rockets center Nene Hilario was given a $15,000 fine by the NBA for "escalating an altercation" by pushing San Antonio Spurs center Dewayne Dedmon above the shoulders, it was announced Wednesday.

Nene was assessed one technical foul and ejected at the conclusion of the third quarter of the Rockets' 126-99 win in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Game 2 of the best-of-7 series is Wednesday night in San Antonio.

Nene grabbed Dedmon in the neck area in an attempt to push the Spurs center away from Rockets teammate James Harden after those two had gone face to face and exchanged words.

Officials quickly intervened before the situation escalated further. Dedmon and Harden each received a technical.

Nene tweeted after the game that there was "no bad blood" and that he was just trying to "protect my teammate."
