Anyone here held a Junior Sys Admin position before? If so, what to expect?

Gonna start getting things together to leave help desk in a couple months.

My new gig has allowed me to work closely with our Sys Admins and these guys do alot with Azure, O365 admin, Sharepoint, etc. If you're not already doing so on the desk I would start trying to get the experience. I'm sure there's alot more that they do, but that's what I've seen for the most part. Also, be prepared to bring ideas/products to the table to better serve the company.

Well damn, they already have me working a lot with Azure, O365, and a little Sharepoint. I just figured sysadmins had more server responsibilites.

I was looking at Jr system admin spots recently.

One thing you need to know is PowerShell and batch scripting. You're going to be automating things a lot

Alot of apps are moving to the cloud now so server work will be there, but the move to the cloud is becoming more prevalent.

This is the truth. Google is your best friend when it comes to scripting.

I have a little bit of scripting experience. I think I can learn most on the fly.

As mentioned above, look into automating stuff via scripting and powershell. Office 365, Checkout products like citrix and other cloud/virtualizarion technologies. various backup systems (commvault, veeam, backup exec etc.), know some networking. As mentioned before, alot of things are moving to the cloud, but you may run into a spot that still host their own servers.

I'm definitely have to touch up on my networking knowledge. That's my weak spot at the moment.

"Man I just wanna work 80 hours a week instead of 40"
Man imagine if you could flip that to 160 because of remote only jobs.

Reviewing of AD, configuring permissions within AD, creating and deploying GPO (group policy objects)
Possibly trace routing of IP addresses,
Windows installations, troubleshooting of Windows issues, Windows configuration and performance tuning.
Eventually P2V (physical to virtual) conversions to some flavor of virtual environment
Replacing hardware
SAN configuration and builds
Possible software integration
Depending on the environment cabling and rack and stacking of servers
LOTS of reviewing of logs
Powershell scripting

I am trying to think of all the stuff I did coming up in IT, make sure you register for all the tech sites. LOL. Going to be doing a lot of Google searches for answers other have come across.

Congrats on the change, help desk is certainly the normal progression into Sys Admin.

tay1 tay1 congrats on the new position. I am considered Sr Sys Admin at this position, but with Windows designation, so all I'd add to what everyone else said is chances are they already have processes and team in place and you'd just be coming into how they already do things in terms of like what software they use, limitations of their network and regulations, etc. But your ambition to study and learn ahead is appreciated and certainly more than most (including myself)

Anybody tryna get this GS money?

I wonder if they follow the GS scale or if they are separate from everyone else since they are the Air Force. I ask because I had a homeboy working at Belvoir making X as a GS, left went and took a different GS job for more money. However the second GS position took into account schooling, certifications, and other stuff and raised his salary but was the same GS level and step.

Maybe they have a direct hiring authority?

Some agencies have been using direct hiring for 2210 - IT Specialists since 2019. Cyber took priority when I was at DOJ.

titang545 titang545 or anyone else worked a 2nd IT job? How'd you handle it? Had 2 jobs in my early 20s and swore it off forever because of burnout, but I almost relied on both at the time. Been thinking of trying a 2nd even or weekend job for not more than a year with a more measured plan just to clear debt and save for some ****.

Me personally I am still at a age or body is at the age where I don't get tired. I would go 6-2, then 3-12, then take every other Friday off and spend with the family. Because it would only take me 30 minutes to get to the second job I would arrive before 3. Get there at 2:30 hit my hours for the week Thursday. The key is get a second job you can do in your sleep, so that you don't get burned out. Like I wouldn't take on a programming gig as a second job, to much room for a major mistake. However like a helpdesk-ish job where you don't normally get calls in the evening. I was good, from like 7 on I would get no calls because nobody knew the helpdesk was still open.

There's something called ITSC Support, it's fully remote and they were offering like 55k-60k so about 29/hr or so for their help desk support. I went through the process then they want you to pay $50 for your own background check I was like "because of that, I'm out" but upon more research they are legit and have a LinkedIn page. I might revisit it myself. I think they even allow you to make your own hours and work when you like a lot of WFH phone support type jobs.

Was in a similar boat a few months back. Was looking to see if I could grab something extra just to stack some extra bread for 6 months or a year to use to help invest/kickstart a business venture. One spot was advertised as being "Remote". After interviewing on a panel with 4 individuals and being offered the position, they started talking about "You may need to be on-site". I asked is this just for starting out and then it switches to fully remote? They respond with "No, the remote would be if another pandemic took place or snowstorm":smile:rolleyes ). I turned down the offer.

Yeah there's some fakeout remote listings out there for sure.

Oh word pay for my own background check, yeah that seems wild. Company just going to write it off anyways. I would consider if it I'm going 1099.

Pissed missed two easy questions on the interview I just finished. Had a brain lapse on what is IAAS (Infrastructure as a Service) and XAAS (Everything as a Service). Before that, I was rolling through the interview, kind of unsure if I would want the job at the end when he discussed what the environment. Seems like a helpdesk, because you get tickets "cut" but the opportunity to work in the cloud is hard to pass up. Well we will see how it goes.
