PRIME As a developer, language certs don't mean anything. As far as your question, knowing PHP would probably lend you to more opportunities in web development since it's a basic language and the concepts can transfer over to other language more-or-less. If you know JavaScript already, I'd say learn AngularJS instead of NodeJS since I see more opportunities for Angular. They're both just frameworks and it's really preference which one you like better and want to pursue further.

Cool, yeah I know javascript already and have a very shallow understanding/experience with PHP.

I'm looking more so to get experienced/knowledged in the backend rather than front end like I've been working and freelancing in for so long.

I've read about how Node is taking JS towards the backend so its interests me but I'll look into Angular also.

PHP is definitely a solid option but Angular is a better option than Node in the regards to JS frameworks. Knowing PHP will help w/ web app development and coding w/ WordPress. Even if you don't use it fully, understanding it will help u w/ WordPress as I've learned recently having to go in and change little things in a theme that a client purchased. Another great thing is that PHP is really simple to learn and pick up on and u can learn it on Code Cademy for free

There are tons of jobs around here, many gov't related, and they're always asking for degree or equal experience so I'll have more confidence having that cert when applying to one of those.

I know previous experience is king, but I don't have as much confidence in that as I do with my other skills.

How is code academy compared to somewhere like edx.org (what I use)?

If you're referring to the certs on edx, don't waste your money, they really hold no weight, it's best to list the courses on your resume under continuing education though.

Code Cademy isn't like edx in terms of mooc courses, however, you do learn by doing on Code Cademy through a series of lessons.

And don't short yourself on the WP experience, because a lot of companies use WP for their sites so it's great to know that or Drupal.

Try to join your comp science group in school or uni or volunteer. I didn't have any experience when I got my gig. But I did put that I was on my comp science computer club. I also put all the projects I did on my own to show that you have a good understanding on networking, basic hardware software troubleshooting. For example I put that I set up my own LAMP stack server for hosting personal websites that I use etc.

Definitely Help Desk, u won't get a Geek Squad position outright especially around this time when they're looking for sales reps. They'll promise you Geek Squad after a few months but they say that to get u to work for em....I kno this all too well

Anyone have a good resource for resume templates? How are you all formatting your resumes? I find that I can't use a "traditional" format if I want the key things to stand out.

Currently working tech support for an ISP, got a BA in Information Technology but I'm ready to make moves out of this ****** position. Goal is to go the BA/PM route but I need to strengthen my resume and technical skills first. Decided Im gonna take this Network + as my first cert and then go from there.

What are the best training materials and study methods y'all recommend for this exam?

I used Professor Messer vids on YouTube mainly. Just watched and took notes. His videos are good because they're not long.

Man Professor Messer is the truth I am almost done with chapter 1 for his Sec+ videos and feel like I have learned so much key information.

Going to watch one time through then go back and take notes.

@Fantastic4our  I like how my resume is set up. It's very readable I made it after attending a resume class when I worked for the DoD. You can see key information quickly it's easy for someone to scan over in a short amount of time. Only thing I need to figure out how to do is change the color of my bold separator line lol I made it probably 3-4 years ago can't remember how. I'll see if I can upload an example here.

Edit: Figured out how to change the horizontal line color .I like to use a color because it makes it stand out. I used gold because I went to vcu. Looked good got a lot of compliments on my format at career fairs. Here's my template if anyone wants to use it .

just came from a meet and greet at Georgetown for their IT Management program...met the Admissions Advisor and the Program Manager, and im def interested, but i need to go back and completely rewrite my statement of interest

If you are trying to actually learn the material brain dumps won't help.

It hurts when you go into a technical interview which is one way to weed that out. Unless...you have the brain dump for the tech interview (and interview).
