Jordan is a GREEDY man

Maybe yall really think it was done as a congratulatory gesture. Maybe thats the non-business sense world yall live in

Marketing wise I can tell you it was a shrewd move...."How can we use a celebs image and create association by osmosis?"

Chicago loves MJ....We want Chicago to love us.....Lets use this unique situation to capitalize and promote our product.

It happens all the time in black hat advertising

Theres a reason they didnt put the real Jumpman logo on there because they knew they were walking a fine line.

They paid for the "ad" to get a return on investment....A return on investment indicates they looked to capitalize. They used MJ's name and likeness to capitalize

MJ, probably Nike and his lawyers decided not to let this one slide and decided to protect their billion dollar brand...shame on them

Guess its boring being MJ if this this the type of stuff he waste his time on.

First world problems for the filthy rich :smh:

It's ridiculous.

Funny thing is, people are acting like the ad helped them sell more steaks. Like people that normally wouldn't have bought a steak, seen the MJ ad and just had to have one.

If the page with the coupon was blank, they would have had the same outcome. If the coupon was on the next page.....same outcome. People didn't buy steaks because of MJ, They bought them because the coupon....

What if the ad didn't have a coupon? If it was just a whole page in the middle of the ad? Could Jordan still sue?

tell nike that

Jordan outside of basketball is a loser of a person. Everybody knows that. With that being said, I rep Jewel, not Dominick's.

That wasn't an advertisement. It wasn't advertising anything. It was a coupon.

Would you or anyone you know have went and bought steaks just because the page had that MJ ad on it? Didn't think so.

Y'all are acting like they took a pic of MJ eating a steak, PS'd their brand of steak sauce on the table and added a coupon for both...*****

U find a business that would spend thousands of dollars on an "ad" to just congratulate someone I will show you a business thats not going to be around much longer.

I hate to spill ad secrets but some of yall are really naive

The MJ name & number was used as a "pattern interrupt"

The idea is to get people to see a familiar name and logo and stopped to read it ,as they read it they also see a coupon that will benefit the business

So yea if you really think a bunch of people didnt read that ad because of MJ's name and also saw the coupon because they were stopped by the MJ name you are in denial of the business's true intentions

someone post the definition of advertisement

I know where this thread is heading

At the end of the day, they are using his name to bring attention to a promotion. It wasn't like hey Michael, congrats! No it was hey Michael congrats and here is a promo we're running while we got your attention. Let's not forget Michael has a steakhouse and they are running a promo for steaks using his name. As to how close this location is to a Michael Jordan Steakhouse, I don't know, but there is still some conflict there.

When the dust settles and the smoke clears, business is business. and until any of you are in that position, you'll never understand.

hit the nail on the head. Like how many of us have seen maybe a water ice stand or a day care that has paintings of spiderman or sesame street( just examples) randomly on the walls outside. It catches kids eyes. This is the same concept. These people arent dumb. They know what they were doing with this promotion.

And why are people acting like only Jordan does this. Every celebrity has to protect their brand, and will have those lawyers swoop down with the quickness when their likeness is being used.

When people say it's about protecting his image, do they mean defamation?

Soo, using his name to sell a product he doesn't approve of?

Forget that Jordan loves his steak, this is about sending a message! A message to who? Any business that wants to profit off of his celebrity! Even if it's a grocery store and they were simply following the theme of the magazine issue dedicated to him..... Yeah try saying that out loud. No one is saying he is not legally in the right to protect his celebrity. What we are saying is that he's only making his public image worse with this lawsuit. He's only reinforcing the idea that he's a greedy narcissistic ahole that only thinks and cares about himself like some man-baby.

Just because other wealthy celebrities with legal teams would do the same doesn't make it right. Some might avoid it simply because it's such bad press.

Think about this honestly. How do you justify publicly suing for 5 mill over an ad congratulating you on a lifetime accomplishment? "It's about sending a message." The message that gets across is that Jordan is a greed ridden shell of a man that values money over everybody and everything else.

I think its the fact that Jordan is one man where as Apple or Microsoft is an actual company thats throwing you off

Its the same thing. You use Apple's name/trademark to sell steak you get sued you dont cry about Tim Cook being a greedy bastard.

Jordan is a trademark, company, brand. Worth billions. Its the same as Apple or Microsoft or any other company who's amassed that level of notoriety and fiscal success.

Both sides were greedy but one was leveraging a bigger brand to get more customers. So who's really the greedy one?

There is a famous story about Michael Jordan visiting the home of North Carolina teammate Buzz Peterson; while playing a casual game of cards with Peterson's mother, Jordan attempted to cheat while the old woman was using the bathroom. This is often used as an example of what made Jordan so awesome; he would do absolutely anything to win, regardless of the circumstance. And because the character in this anecdote is MJ, the story is charming. However, I doubt Buzz Peterson would tell this yarn if it had involved his mother and some random dude he met in Anthropology 251 (and if he did, the story would now be about that one time he brought a lunatic home for Thanksgiving break).

Jordan's diabolical competitiveness makes him more admirable, but this isn't the case for most humans. Have you ever played golf with someone who sliced a drive and threw his club into a tree? If so, I suspect you did not find yourself thinking, "Man, I really respect Andy. He really wants this." Have you ever been on a softball team with a dude who muttered to himself whenever he made an error and screamed at teammates if they happened to miss a cut-off man? Did you find this inspiring? Do you miss having beers with that guy? In fact, think about the most competitive, cutthroat, go-for-the-jugular person who currently works in your office. In all likelihood, this is someone you either (a) kind of hate, or (b) find embarrassing. A noncompetitive person can't reasonably succeed, but a hypercompetitive person looks like a buffoon to everyone who's reasonable.

^i don't see how your story has any relevance to him suing a company for using his name to sell steaks.
