KENDRICK LAMAR: "GOOD KID M.A.A.D CITY"

Alright I might get flamed for this, but hell it's my opinion.

Lyrically the album is very on point, the only album I can think this year that's better is Life is Good.

However, I feel like Kenricks's funny voices detract from the album. I feel like if he could do that and make his rapping slightly less monotonous I could rock with it a lot more.

The storytelling is on point too tho, I don't know how anybody could say he's spitting empty bars.

Oh Yeah and I think Backseat Freestyle is trash I could've done without that, or should've at least been a bonus track.

SMH @ Backseat being trash. I agree with the voice, that's why I'll never be a big fan of his but this album is nice

my NT bro adrian (GRITTYMAN) and i had a full on conversation for a good hour and half via iMessage about the importance of this album for the generation and music in general, we spoke on the lyricism, delivery, content, arrangement.... it was just a great discussion so i want to thank him for his time, knowledge, insight and good company. i have not seen him in this thread, he may not even see this. but i wanted to put those positive words about him into the universe regardless.

Appreciate the kind words Shay, just now checking this thread out, haven't been on NT in a minute...still reading through these replies.

Loving the album, favorite song (for the moment) is M.A.A.D City

You have to put the songs in context of the album and story though, Backseat fits PERFECTLY with the skit just prior and leads into Art of Peer Pressure....sure I think Collect Calls and even Cartoons and Cereal are better tracks overall but they wouldn't fit in with the overall story arc as well as Backseat freestyle does imo

And I agree about the voices a bit, but part of me likes it b/c its a little different but it can be a little annoying.....Kendrick kinda has a strange voice anyways, if you listen to his stuff when he was younger as "K-Dot" you can really here him trying to almost mask it by rapping in a different voice :lol

Oh and rating his work:

GKMC: 9.3
Section 80: 8.8
OD: 9.0 (I'm probably overrating this a tad but the Heart Pt. 2 is one of his top 5 songs to me)

How would y'all rate his work?
GKMC 9.5
Section80 8.5
OD 8

GKMC - 9 (Black Boy Fly & The Heart PT 3 shoulda been on it)
Section.80 - 10 (Its a classic to me and I still listen to it constantly)
OD - 8.5 (Aint like it at first but it grew on me alot)

EDIT: 1000th post lol

I just realized this as I was listening this morning that the ending of Sherane where Kendrick's dad is like put my oldies back on you killing my vibe alludes to the whole aura of BDKMV. Kendrick wants those oldies and that feeling where rap was free and honest but the music industry is killing his vibe and the vibe for many others.

This album is us, it’s ours, it’s the ‘80s babies album. Listening to it, you have no choice but to relive something you experienced growing up.

This is why i think this album is sticking to so many people. Perfect way to put it

Kendrick on Shyne's comments
"It's really no response [to him]," Kendrick revealed. "I'm not a sensitive guy, so that's his opinion. Can't stop what the world thinks, so yeah, that's him."

handled that with pure class. props to kendrick for being the bigger man.

shyne's entitled to his opinion, no doubt, but he did come off disrespectful by labeling it trash. who cares what shyne thinks anyway, last song of his i ever cared for was the barrington levy joint. forgot the name...

Is it a masterpiece then?

This was Bomani Jones' argument that I tried share.

That immediate "classic" talk is the problem.
Its art. Hoop Dreams is a masterpiece of a movie (probably my favorite movie), but I have no desire to watch it more than the two times I've seen it. Certain art doesn't have replay value because of the feelings that it inspires, this album falls into that category for me. Does that make it any less impressive? Not to me, but im sure people disagree with that.
