What the hell does Kobe's 4 rings have to do with being the best player in the world RIGHT NOW? RIGHT NOW. PRESENTLY. CURRENTLY. AT THE MOMENT.

Past accomplishments do not mean anything in the context of this discussion. How difficult is that to understand?

The discussion is about who the best player is TODAY.

There is only one correct answer and that would be LeBron James.
cosign. If anyone right now has the nerve to say, "Lebron James has already put together a better career than Kobe has." Than they are out of their +%#+#*% mind. But right now, back to back MVPs, leading that GOD awful Cavs team to the best record in the NBA, Lebron James is the most talented player in the NBA right now.

And the man is still doing it. I wanna see how he would be without all those ailments. I wanna see anyone's best player in the NBA have all that under their belt and still do it like Kobe.
Messed up ankle too

and in his 14th season......plus over 2 seasons worth of playoff games....simply amazing with all that mileage and injuries

Exactly.

at these lebron slurpers. seriously, i love lebron though and kobe. Kobe is my favorite player ever, but this dude is simply amazing. you cant call lebron the best player, what has dude done honestly? Getting sweeped in the finals? Kobe has 4 rings, until lebron wins ONE, he is nothing compared to kobe.

As much as I dislike Kobe, if he is able to come back and lead the Lakers to a repeat with a Finals MVP, he's still the best in the world.
Again, we're not talking about another time period. We're talking about as of today...Sunday April 25 2010, who is the best basketball player in the world? We're not talking about as of 2009 or as of June 2010.

2010...

LeBron's regular season stats > Kobe's stats

Cav's regular season record > Laker's record (LeBron has a much weaker supporting cast too)

LeBron's playoff stats > Kobe's playoff stats

Cav's playoff performances so far > Lakers

LeBron's health right now > Kobe's

I'm not a supporter of either player or team but there is no way you can justify that Kobe is better than LeBron right now.

June 2010 is current man.  Nobody goes off of today, April 25th.  We go off of this season or this playoffs in its entirety.  I was saying the same thing last year, and then saw Kobe dominate the Magic in the Finals and thought, maybe I spoke too soon.

The funny thing is I am a LeBron supporter but I gotta keep it real and say if Kobe wins another chip with a Finals MVP in June, he's the best.

Hurts to admit it but Lebron has passed up Kobe as the best player in the league.
Not trying to make any excuses but i'm sure Kobe's injury got something to do with it.
Nevertheless i respect Lebron's game but still can't stand the city of Cleveland.

Kobe winning another ring with the Lakers this season wouldnt confirm he's the best because Kobe has a much better supporting cast and much better head coach than LeBron.

Dont get me wrong, Kobe is still a great player despite his current poor form, injuries, age, etc but he's also lucky to be in a great situation where he can afford to have off-nights but the Lakers can still win.

The Cavs are not even a playoff team without LeBron. It's mind boggling that one man can make this team into a title contender despite all their short-comings. If the Cavs dont win the title this season it almost certainly wont be LeBron's fault. Here's a guy who was averaging 40 ppg in the East finals last season against the Magic because the rest of his team was trash.

At the end of the day, basketball is a team game. You can not expect 1 guy to carry the load and go all the way and win the NBA title. It's never happened in NBA history and we can not expect LeBron to do it himself. Other guys will have to step up. The reason why Kobe got ring #4 last season is because he had the support to supplement his great play. He wasn't able to do it himself when Shaq left. LeBron is in the same situation now...he needs others to support his great play.

This whole situation reminds me of when Kobe was averaging 35 ppg surrounded by bums while Dwayne Wade was on a title contender for 2-seasons. Wade won a title but we all said that Kobe was the best player in the league at that time. Just because Wade won a ring did not mean that he was the best player in the world. The same situation applies now. LeBron is putting up massive numbers and is carrying a weaker team while Kobe is still a great player but is on a significantly better team than LeBron's team. Just because Kobe won on a better team (and could win again this season) does not necessarily make him the better player.

it doesn't matter if the lakers win the championship. lebron has been the best player since 2 years ago and just basically confirms that the more he plays.

if kobe wins another ring, it just means he has the best team. if the spurs win a ring, does that mean duncan is the best player again?

lebron is by far the best player riht now if you look at the entire season up until now. there is nobody close. people who say kobe have to bring up his rings b/c performance-wise, nobody is close to lebron. and that has been the case for the past 2+ years.

Well I don't know if you've noticed, but Bron's supporting cast has been playing a lot better than Kobe's has this season. Hell Pau is the only consistent player every night. Just because of the names on the back of the jerseys are more recognizable doesn't mean that they are not and have not been playing worse. Bron has a lot of support this year so that won't be an excuse anymore.

And FYI, I was here in '06 when the Heat bandwagon was too full and there were MANY people on NT, and outside that were saying Wade was the best player in the league after those Finals. Being able to perform when everything is on the line has to account for something and despite Bron's great exploits in earlier rounds and during the season, he's yet to do that in the Finals where the greatest of the greats cement their legacies.

lebron is also a better playmaker than kobe is. you give lebron pau AND bynum, it's a wrap. really. hell, an old shaq is a huge upgrade (AN OLD SHAQ

some may have thought wade was the best player (just like "some" still think kobe is the best player now), but the majority still thought kobe was the best player back then.

you really think lebron cannot perform and play at the level he's been playing at in the finals? the dude will dominate ANYBODY anywhere anytime. it depends on whether mo will can make his 3s, or his big men can grab rebounds... lebron is doing what MJ used to do before he got pippen: put up 35+, 7-8 boards, 7-8 dimes in the playoffs.

First off having Pau and Bynum would probably change the way Bron operates cause that's two people clogging the post as opposed to him having most of the time free lanes and 4 open shooters to pass to when he drives so who knows if his numbers will be the same.

Secondly, how the hell do you know he will perform in the Finals...are you a psychic. Last time he was in the Finals he individually played pretty bad 22 pts 7 assists, 6 turnovers a game on 36% shooting. Yeah I know his supporting cast was terrible, but that's been the case his whole career yet he's able to put up monster numbers.

Is he a better player now than he was back then, of course, is his supporting cast better, definitely, but we have yet to see him be LeBEAST in the NBA FINALS so unless you know something I don't know, you can't just assume that he will do it when his legacy even at this young stage of his career will be on the line.

To be the best you have to beat the best.  How ya'll dudes making excuses for LeBron if they don't win the title?  How you gonna switch it up to "Kobe just has the better team" but if LeBron wins it, "he's the best player I've ever seen".

Gasol = Jamison
Artest < LeBron

Yup.

Not to mention, the lakers lack of outside shooting.

Mo, west, & parker can at least hit that wide open 3.

Talking about injuries while trying to argue for Shaquille O'Neal.

As far as Pau Jamison:

1. Pau Gasol is better at every single aspect of the game of basketball inside the 3-point line than Antawn Jamison.
2. Both of them can get you 20 and 10, but the probability that one of them is going to get you those numbers is much higher with Gasol.
3. Gasol will get you 20 on a much better shooting percentage.
4. Unlike Jamison, Gasol will also get you 3-5 assists and get others involved.
5. Neither is a good defender, but unlike Jamison Gasol isn't abysmal on the defensive end.

You've got to be kidding when you put Jamison on the same level as Gasol. Pau Gasol was all-NBA 3rd last year, and if he isn't this year as well, it will only be because he missed 17 games. I don't know if some of you have checked Gasol's stats this year before you consider Jamison his equal:

18.3 points (on .536 shooting, .790 FT%)
11.3 rebounds
3.4 assists
1.7 blocks
2.2 turnovers

Those are his numbers. But you still scapegoat the hell out of him whenever the Lakers lose, as long as it can tone down criticism of your precious Kobe. Anything goes when you can play the "soft Euro" card.
