2015 NBA Re-Draft: The Year of the Unicorn

5. Orlando Magic - D'Angelo Russell

Original Spot For Russell: 2nd Overall (Lakers)
Original 5th Pick: Mario Hezonja

This pick is more about value rather than need. At this point, the Magic had just drafted their point guard of the “future” in Elfrid Payton, and really need to surround him with shooters to make sure that he succeeds. Instead, they grab Russell who is the clear-cut best player on the board at this point even though he shares the same position as Payton. Orlando would find a way to make it work though, whether that be Russell moving to the shooting guard or trading one of them. The Magic can’t be picky – they just need talent.

2. Los Angeles Lakers - Kristaps Porzingis

Original Spot For Porzingis: 4th Overall (Knicks)
Original 2nd Pick: D'Angelo Russell

It’s 2013. The Lakers have just fired Mike Brown and are in search of a new leader to coach the All-Star cast of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash. It’s between Mike D’Antoni and Phil Jackson. Jim Buss sets his ego aside and hires Jackson to lead the bunch. They win the title as a 7th seed, and by some sort of Mitch Kupchak wand-waving magic they still end up with the 2nd pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. In this parallel universe, Phil sways Mitch to draft his favorite player in the draft, Porzingis, instead of the inconsistent D’Angelo Russell. Porzingis, Kobe Bryant (with two healthy, spry and totally not ruptured Achilles) and a content, (not at all upset about his lack of touches) Dwight Howard would have terrorized the league for the next half decade. Jim and D’Antoni ripped Laker Nation of this reality. It's truly devastating for those supporting the boys in purple and gold.

27. Los Angeles Lakers - Richaun Holmes

Original Spot For Holmes: 37th Overall (76ers)
Original 27th Pick: Larry Nance Jr.

Holmes came on late for the 76ers at the tail end of last season. He’s a good athlete with the physical tools to become a solid rim-runner/shot-blocker rotational piece for a good team. The Lakers have given big minutes to Timofey Mozgov and Tarik Black over the past two years. As such, they could afford giving Holmes a shot.
