let this thread die (NYK)

Jeffrey Kessler, one of the union’s bulldog negotiators during the lockout, has been added to the team to fight for Jeremy Lin and Steve Novak’s Bird rights in today’s arbitration showdown with NBA lawyers, according to a source.

The Players Association is trying to restore Lin’s and Novak’s Bird rights that were lost when they were waived by Houston and San Antonio, respectively. Without Bird rights, the Knicks have to use their $5 million mid-level exception to re-sign Lin on July 1 and would have no means of legitimately bringing back Novak.

NBA commissioner David Stern said he is confident in the league’s case.

“I think [a decision] will be relatively fast,

Any word on when the hearing starts? Even though it looks like we wont find out today. Id like to know when I can look for statements to see how things went in the hearing.

so David Stern got on espn radio and laughed, saying the knicks are very loaded

@*%@ Stern. What does that even mean? Is he trying to act like we arent capped out and can pay any FA w/e we want without this Bird Rights decision?

Damn 2 weeks? I was expecting like Monday the latest. But w/e, this season isnt even over yet. Would just be nice to kinda know how our offseason will look.

Knicks' Novak testifies at Birds Right case for him and Lin

Steve Novak made a surprise appearace to testify Wednesday at the arbitration hearing between the Players' Association and the NBA in its attempt to restore the Bird Rights for the Knicks' three-point specialist and point guard sensation Jeremy Lin.
No decision was rendered, but it will have to come down before July 1 when Lin and Novak are set to become free agents.
A victory for the union would mean the Knicks would not have to use their $5 million mid-level exception to sign Lin or Novak, and put them in the position to add a prominent free agent.

"The reality here is that it doesn't really affect the Knicks as against Jeremy Lin," Stern said. "It just means that the union is trying to say, 'We want to win this, even though the words of the agreement don't support it, because we'd like the Knicks to have some more money to spend on players.' And that's always been a contention between the NBA and the players. We try to spend what we agreed to spend, and the union says, 'Yeah, but we think you agreed to spend more,' and then we litigate about it.'"

Stern said he doesn't see why the Knicks would need more salary-cap space for another key acquisition, when, in his opinion, they're already stacked.

"I mean, on top of Jeremy and on top of Amare [Stoudemire] and on top of Carmelo [Anthony] and on top of [Tyson] Chandler and on top of [Iman] Shumpert and on top of ...," he said. "I mean, the Knicks are loaded."

Regarding Lin, Stern said he expects him to be a "really good" player for the Knicks.

"Clearly, I have never in all of my number of years seen a phenomena like Jeremy Lin, which I thought was spectacular for Jeremy and for the Knicks and for the league," Stern said. "And he was playing at an extraordinary high level, one that I think most NBA teams didn't expect him to do it. Hopefully he's healthy again -- I saw him recently and he said he is -- and so the Knicks are going to have a high-performing point guard. That's great. That's great for the league and it's great for the Knicks."

Nah Stern, we aint loaded yet. Wait till we sign Nash or Dragic and still have cap room to sign another big.

Yeah . The +@+* is he saying were nowhere near being stacked.

So, I haven't really been keeping up with this arbitration news lately. Can someone give me a brief explanation as to what's going on?

From what I understand, it's basically the NBA reviewing a rule in the CBA about us retaining the rights to Lin and Novak? If we win, does it mean we have extra money now to go spend on other players?

Sorry for the ignorance.

Short answer, Yes.

Im not sure of all the specifics on what we can pay both guys. But we wouldnt have to use that 5 Mil MLE on either of them. So we could use it on Dragic, or someone else this Summer. And signing both guys wouldnt hurt our cap.
