:lol @ people in here saying Jay-Z is not a legend...
You're only saying that because dude isn't dead yet..

Also LMFAO @ whoever said BIG only had 2 great albums... THE DUDE ONLY HAD 2 ALBUMS PERIOD FAMB.
So because he wasn't able to live past his 2nd album, that takes away from his greatness? Thats a whack reason to take away from the dude.

This thread is non stop comedy. Dudes going at Bob Marley's neck, apparently Hov isn't a Legend, and Big ONLY had 2 great albums.

I really want to know who some of you guys think are "legends"

Jay-z is not over ratted Reasonable doubt, Blueprint, American Gangster, and the black album are all great albums. Biggie on the other hand is wildly over ratted, in the 90's yea he was good at that time, but greatest ever? **** no

lol @ ppl saying 2pac is overrated....i agree jay-z is..also KRS ONE i cant stand dudes voice.:lol

im curious as to where the people saying pac is overrated are from. if the majority of them are from where i think their from then it all makes sense.

Hands down it has to be Biggie. I like big but two albums? Too small of a sample size to be legitimate. Dude is ill but def most overrated legend (I said overrated legend per post not overrated in his skills.)

The one poster goin in on elvis is not lyin. Dude was a hella gimmick n biter. That's real history.

Since most of the posts debunking the Elvis as king theory were deleted, here's a recap.

Elvis Presley was a great imitator, period. If he were Black, he would still be sitting in the back of the bus the rest of us.

He wasn't a great musician, and he had no direct effect on any musical genre, never changing it nor influencing the direction of it, be it good, or even bad. All he had was the color of his skin, and a back catalog of race music to rely upon.

White people in America didn't even publicly care for the music until a White face was placed upon it, as they then declared him King of a musical genre, one that had been around since he was born.

Only back then it was being called the sped up blues.

The analogy used was, what if someone walked into a museum, then traced over a Picasso painting, then waiting to color it in when they got home? They used a different palate, then take the painting some place where people  have never even heard of Picasso, and they are now calling the tracer the KING of this new found work of art.

Shouldn't the family of Picasso be pissed? How is that original?? How is he now The King?

Therefore Elvis Presley is the most overrated act of all time.

Level the playing field during that time, with all of the original acts being allowed to do their thing upon equal footing, Elvis Presley would not have even gotten noticed.

for everyone saying Jay-Z :{ wow just wow

I agree with them... when it comes to him being the GOAT rapper a lot of you guys factor his money, time in the spotlight, Beyonce, all his business ventures... none of that **** has to do with his music period.

He wasn't the best rapper, his isn't the best lyricist, and he isn't the most favored MC in rap... just by these new school dudes :{

NaS said it best... there is no best nothing... one can be highly favored amongst others, but Music, like everything else, is all subjective.

A kid growing up these days may think Wayne is the best ever or even Soulja Boy, but the young backpackers would say Lupe. Now me not being in their age group I'm going to see what Lupe is about, and I listened to him and don't see what all the fuss is about.

Like wise... when I say someone like Big, Pun, NaS, Big L... these younger dudes say the **** that they're saying in this thread.

Furthermore... someone older than me would say yeah Big, Pun, NaS (well NaS is a well resepcted MC throughout many age groups), Big L is cool... but what about Rakim, KRS-One, Kane, Public Enemy, etc... and I wouldn't dare say that those guys were wack because it was before my time and I've heard some of their stuff... but not all of them to make an opinion on them to say they're lesser than ones I favor... even if I do listen to all their music I would still respect those who would consider or favor those rappers over rappers I've chosen.

Before the Internet it was what region you were from that dictated what you mostly heard, but nowadays what's hot in Bowling Green Kentucky, is hot in NYC, Cali, and Canada.

Yeah you still have your little local acts that come up and get on, but once they get on they and become well known then every hood knows them because of the Internet and Social Networking, WorldStar and the likes.

I will say this about Jay... he's a good businessman and an even better career minded rapper.

When I say career minded rapper I'm talking about the moves he's done for his rap career to put him where he is today. He deaded all his friends that helped him out from the get go, but he did them a favor and like he said he made them what they are today and they're all grown men and they can fend for themselves.

Now the next part I would say he aligned himself with everyone who was hot and rode their wave until they fell off the surfboard and he just jumped onto the next wave that was coming.

When he came on he was aligning himself or trying to with Biggie... then after Big died he started riding with DMX, then Ja Rule, then his brand began to come to it's own with RocAFella, he tried to ride Dipsets wave, but Cam wasn't having it :lol, then when they died out or broke up he knew he had to do something else to stay in the limelight. He became Prez of Def Jam, Beyonce, then he started trying to align with Wayne and now he's with Kanye. Whoever is hot at the moment then that's who Jay will be around to keep him name, image, buzz out there.

I know that's a long read and I'm going to get a lot of "did not read gifs" :rolleyes

by no means am i a jay-z stan @ this stage in my hip-hop listening but , MUSICALLY i truly believe that jay-z is one of the GOAT.

dude is responsible for several classic records, he's one of the games most lyrically witty/wordplay, flows on point, conceptual songs here n there, and lets not forget, he doesnt write. dudes an artist.

honestly i havent been concerned with jay for 4+ years now but his talent cannot be denied. AND he's 40+ years of age, past his prime and can STILL rap circles around 75-80% of the game...

c'mon dude. MUSICALLY, his respect is due...

:{ at the Hova slander
Don't sweat it kid. Every year they try and fail to derail the man's legacy. It is what it is and when its said and done his Jersey will be hung with the greats. Any talk beyond that is personal preference.

I'm not a real big fan of Jay Z. The only stuff I really dug of his, was the stuff he did with Pharrell. That stuff was incredibly musical, which is right up my alley. My fav of all time, then the greatest was The God MC, Rakim. He was poetic, then was listenable for all ages, also incredibly musical, as the stuff that he and Eric B laid down was not only legendary, but groundbreaking. It changed the direction of Hip Hop forever, as Rakim's sound and delivery were incredibly authentic, and then still relevant today.  Much of his stuff doesn't sound dated either, like that of good music of any genre.

However, I could never take Jay Z seriously as a musician, as that is not what he is. He is like a cross between storyteller and rhyme spittah', not a bad thing, but for those like myself, those who really dig the music, I am not trying to hear what he's discussing over musical content. For people like me, it all has to fit, making sense. Slick Rick did that exceptionally well.

That's why I feel that while he may be a legend, he is still a bit overrated as a musical artist. The stuff he did with Pharrell was his most complete sound for me.

I wouldn't be mad if someone just simply felt Nas is overrated...you are entitled to that opinion.

But to say he only has ONE "GOOD" album... wow. :rollin :rollin

I'm not even the biggest Nas fan, but that is just an absurd thing to say. :{

iono, i've been getting bored of hov's topics for a while now, same-o same-o...
