It's really not that far fetched...
Happened in the past but we were no where near as technologically advanced as we are now, so people were able to cope.
Now days people can't go anywhere without a cell phone.

So a huge Super Solar storm would just be building up undetected until a year before it's supposed to hit Earth? It's not like it would just appear out of nowhere,stuff doesn't form that fast in space.
