YANKEES SIGN LHP DAMASO MARTE TO A THREE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH A CLUB OPTION FOR 2012

The New York Yankees announced today that they have signed left-handed pitcher Damaso Marte to a three-year contract with a one-year cluboption for 2012.

Marte, 33, was acquired by the Yankees from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 26 along with OF Xavier Nady in exchange for RHPs RossOhlendorf, Jeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen and OF Jose Tabata. In 72 combined relief appearances with the Pirates and Yankees in 2008, he was 5-3 with a4.02 ERA, holding opponents to a .214 batting average (52-for-243). The lefthander made 25 appearances with the Yankees, going 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA, but allowedjust 2ER over his final 16 appearances (11.0IP) from August 16 through the end of the season and held the opposition to a .135 batting average over the stretch(5-for-37).

Over the last five years (2004-08), Marte owns the fourth-most appearances among Major League pitchers (352). Among left-handed relieversin the Majors over the same span, he ranks second in appearances and fourth in strikeouts (307).

Originally signed by Seattle as a non-drafted free agent in 1992, Marte has made 519 career Major League relief appearances combined withthe Mariners (1999), Pirates (2001, '06-08), White Sox (2002-05) and Yankees (2008), going 22-24 with 36 saves, a 3.29 ERA, 212 walks, 508 strikeouts and a.222 opponents batting average. He was signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent in November 2000, going 3-1 with a 3.50 ERA at Double-A Norwichbefore being traded to Pittsburgh in exchange for infielder Enrique Wilson.

In talking to a few different people in the Bronx, the Damaso Marte deal seems just about official. The announcement could come later today.

It makes sense on many fronts:

1. Brian Cashman didn't trade Jose Tabata and the three pitchers to let Marte go after two months.

2. The Yankees have been crying for a good lefty reliever for years now. Mike Stanton's last good year in pinstripes was 2002.

3. Phil Coke is not the answer, not yet anyway. He was a stumbling-along prospect who broke through last season and pitched well in a series of generally meaningless September games. Let's not get too excited. Besides, bringing Marte back allows them the luxury of seeing whether Coke can develop as a starter.

4. Joe Girardi's strength as a manager is handling the bullpen, so give him pieces to work with. The rotation could have a guy coming off a serious injury (Wang), a guy coming off a cranky shoulder (Pettitte), a guy coming off throwing 500+ innings over two years (Sabathia) and who knows what else?

Getting two draft picks for a set-up man would be a nice haul. But the Yankees will get their extra picks one way or another. Keeping Marte improves the roster right now.

Not my points but thanks

i hope we dont trade cano, i think dude will bounce back in '09.....count on it.

as for hughes, yanks have been bad mouthing him based on his performance in the arizona fall league...

which means, we wont get any good player back for him

^I also want Cano back in '09...I think he can bounce back.

That's a good look on the Marte signing...good points, TBone.

Rivera
Marte
Coke
Bruney
Edwar
Veras
Melancon
Robertson
Sanchez
Albaladejo
Cox
Britton

Going on that list alone, our bullpen is shaping up to be pretty stellar....I think we should try shoppin B.Bruney though...Robertson has tremendous upside, and we've seen what Coke & Sanchez can do.

Going into next season, I think the Yankees' bullpen will be fine. By getting Marte back, we have a solid left handed reliever, which is something wehaven't had for years. I'm sorry, but the so-called lefty specialist Mike Myers two seasons ago was terrible. Not only do we still have Mo at closer, but we have some great arms like Dan Giese and Dave Robertson, who performed really well this past season, as well as other guys like Coke, Ramirez, Bruney, and Sanchez. Not much of a fan of that porker Britton though, dude looks like he's gonna topple off the mound or fight with Sidney Ponson overranch-flavored sunflower seeds.

Starting pitching is where things get a little trickier. Obviously, the Yankees are going into this at full-speed ready to sign major checks. It's nicethat we're finally dumping so much salary by letting bums like Giambi and Pavano go. It's clearly established that Wang and Chamberlain are going to bestarters for the 09 season. Some people think that Joba belongs in the bullpen as a setup man and heir to the closer throne once Mo leaves, but the Yankeesneed to and are going to be giving him his first real shot at being a starter. Last season, their indecisiveness led to him starting in the bullpen, thenconverted back into a starter with that BS transition program where he started a game and pitched a few innings, no wonder he got hurt. At least, this time, hecan prepare in the offseason and go into spring training, KNOWING that he's a starter. If he tanks as a starter, we can always put him back into thebullpen, like the Red Sox did with Papelbon, and he'll eventually be our closer.

Regarding free agents, the most established ace on the market is CC Sabathia, whom the Yankees are going to be making a fat offer to. The fact that he recentlycontacted Jeter to discuss the Yankees may be a sign that he's inching closer to suiting up in pinstripes. The bottom line is that the Yankees needstarting pitching and have played the role of cheapskate the past few seasons, neglecting to sign aces like Josh Beckett and Johan Santana. Instead, they triedto find a cheaper option, signing guys like Carl Pavano, or relying too heavily on two prospects to carry the rotation in Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy. CC isthe best option. He is a HEALTHY left-handed ace and AL Cy Young winner who can bring confidence and swagger to a starting rotation that has been marred byinjuries and old age. Some may be worried about his postseason record, but he has only been in 3 postseasons, and this past season, he pitched on short restthree consecutive games to almost single-handedly bring the Brewers into the postseason. For a Yankee team that just missed the postseason, I'd say this isthe kind of young dude with heart that we need. I'm sure that once he's on the same team as a guy like Mariano who is clutch in the postseason, and hasthe help of a powerful offense, he won't have a problem adjusting to October baseball. Complimenting him with a right-handed sinkerballer ace like Wangwould give the pinstripes a formidable 1-2 punch.

Adding another free agent pitcher could bolster an already improved rotation. The Yankees could sign someone like Burnett, a 31-year old with experiencedealing strikeouts to AL East batters. They could go for a 35-year old in Derek Lowe who has done well to strengthen the Dodgers rotation in the absence ofBrad Penny and Jason Schmidt and also has AL East experience. The Yankees could also go after the talented, but injury-prone Sheets. Other potential candidatesare Jake Peavy, Oliver Perez, and perhaps Ryan Dempster if he doesn't rejoin with the Cubs. I think Peavy is the most talented of those available, butI'm not really willing to give up major prospects for a guy who doesn't want to pitch for us and is a small-town guy who could be unstable in thecraziness that is the New York market. I don't really care for Perez and Dempster. I'm also not down to sign any pitchers who are 35+ (Lowe). AlthoughSheets is great, I don't want the Yankees to sign another potential Pavano, although something tells me that Sheets will have a great season. I guessI'd roll the dice with Burnett with a three-year deal. He's still young at 31 and has proven himself in the toughest division in baseball.

Hopefully, we sign Pettitte to a one-year deal and a paycut. We could use that kind of guy, a guy who's given most of his career to the pinstripes, ownsfour rings, has a lot of experience, and can pitch clutch in the postseason. Not to mention, he's only 36. Moose is probably going to bolt, at leasthe's ending on a good note with his first 20-win season, although I'm sad he never got a ring with us. Phil Hughes would be nice as the 5th starter. Heshould be healthy and it'll be interesting to see how he pitches when the whole weight of the organization isn't on him like it was this past season tohelp carry the rotation. He should develop nicely. It takes a lot of toughness and heart to come in a do-or-die situation in the 07 ALDS and replace Clemensand pitch a shutout.

In terms of offense, there are a few things that need to be addressed. With the meathead Giambi gone, the Yankees lineup has some room to breathe. This leavesan opening at 1B. While the word is that the Yankees are interested in signing Teixeria, the last thing I want to do is pay all that money (200 mill, I think)over 10 years, especially to a Boras client. The problem is that there aren't many young first basemen who are free agents. Most of them are in theirmid-late 30's (Aaron Boone, anyone?), so Teixeira is still the best option unless the Yankees can make a trade. It doesn't look like Posada is going tobe wearing a New Era fitted at first base any time soon. We're set at 2B with Cano. Although there are a lot of trade rumors, I think Cano is just too goodto give up and trade on. His offseason ballplaying should help and he'll be working with Kevin Long. I think he's poised for a huge year as long as thefans and organization keep their faith in him. Remember, he had the 3rd best batting average in the AL in 06 and although he starts slow in the first half, hisproduction in the second half puts up big numbers. We all know Jeter and A-Rod are mainstays at SS and 3B. With Posada demanding to be starting catcher andconsidering all the money we paid him, we gotta give him the start. I love Jose Molina, he's the best bench catcher in baseball. He's got a cannon andhe's a decent hitter. This probably all means that Pudge isn't going to stick around.

The outfield is where things get a little crazy. First, I say dump Abreu. He's been a great hitter with usually around 20 HR and 100 RBI, but he's justnot that great batting in front of A-Rod, unlike someone like Ortiz in front of Manny. He's not very intimidating to pitchers, who in turn, don't haveto pitch him a certain way with A-Rod coming up at cleanup. I know there's a lot of people who are against this, but I say sign Manny. This guy is the besthitter in baseball and you KNOW he can deliver, unfazed by the New York market. Although I think A-Rod has more potential than Manny, Manny delivers time aftertime, whether it's May or it's October. He can turn around a team singlehandedly (i.e. Dodgers) and hit ridiculous in the postseason (.500). He'sfrom the neighborhood (Washington Heights), has the support of basically the entire Dominican fanbase, and he would be sick batting in front of A-Rod or incleanup, making a more potent tandem than he and Papi had in his Boston days. He has a swagger that the Yankees need and a fragile-minded beast like A-Rod needto learn from. He's got tons of AL experience, having destroyed Yankees pitching over the years, in Cleveland and in Boston. He's also got a grudgeagainst Boston that the Yankees are in the best position to take advantage of. I'd like to see him patrol left field in Fenway rocking pinstripes. I saytake the shot, give him a few years, We can put him in LF, move Nady to his original spot in RF, and work with a Damon/Cabrera or Gardner combination incenter. If Cabrera can't learn consistent hitting, he can be used as trade bait. I love Gardner's speed and he can help us play small ball and stealbases. I think if he continues to develop, he can be a great role player. This would all leave Matsui in sole possession of DH, with Giambi gone. He'sgot two new knees, so he should be good to go and not playing in LF should wear much less on his body. Before he got hurt, he was putting up some big numbersthis past season.

hate to bring this up, but I respect the way the Red Sox are set up. Yeah, they have a few guys with fat contracts, but they get guys who mesh together andplay like a team (i.e. Yankees '96-'00). Guys like Lowell (who started in pinstripes in '98) and Youkilis are guys who don't make tons ofmoney, but play stellar defense and hit consistently (i.e. Tino, Brosius). That's what the Yankees have been missing and I hope they go in that direction. For too long, we've had selfish aging superstars whose egos and bank accounts dragged the team down and killed whatever true sense of heart and pride theDynasty teams had. Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to what goes down this offseason and I'm looking forward to the 09 season. PINSTRIPES.

From Jayson Stark at ESPN...on the Yankees offseason

WHAT THEY NEED: Three starting pitchers, a run-producing bat, possibly a catcher if Jorge Posada has any setbacks and, of course, to end their long, painfuleight-year drought without winning one darned World Series.

FREE AGENT WHO COULD TOP THEIR LIST: CC. (What? You were expecting maybe Jeff Weaver?)

HOW THEY'LL SHOP: Hey, they're the Yankees. They've just lopped nearly $90 million off the payroll. They have a new gazillion-dollar money-machineballpark opening. And you might have noticed they didn't make the playoffs this season. So if it can be bought, they'll buy it. They'll be all overCC, Burnett, Lowe and Teixeira. And once they get all that sorted out, they'll be all over the next wave of free-agent starters if they're not shoppedout. They could even chase Manny Ramirez and Orlando Hudson if they really get lathered up. So in other words, they'll be a New York Post back page waitingto happen every 15 minutes this winter.

i like this deal, but i would rather have tex. no complaints though swisher's a solid ball player .......

john heyman's on wfan and he said the yanks got him to play 1b and be a backup outfielder ..........

i dont understand why we traded for someone who is batting less than .250 for his career. this move is just confusing. we might as well develop our youngtalent if we going to trade for an outfielder. gardner isnt bad, they should have gave him a full year to develop

I know it took a lot to give up on Betemit but I don't mind the deal as long as Jeff Marquez doesn't become a star.

i'd like to have kept marquez, but i like this deal. we've found a role-player (Brosius, anyone?) 1B alternative to getting the $200+ million Boras manTeixeira who can also switch it up and play outfield. not bad.

The New York Yankees have acquired outfielder/first baseman Nick Swisher from the White Sox.

New York sent infielder Wilson Betemit and minor league pitchers Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez to Chicago in exchange for Swisher and minor league pitcher Kanekoa Texeira.

The 27-year-old Swisher had 24 home runs in 153 games with the White Sox this season. His .219 batting average was the worst among players with at least 502 plate appearances, which is the number needed to qualify for the batting title.
Details to follow.

yo stringer, can we get an in depth scouting report on swisher. seems like a cool dude that enjoys the game. i like his personality.

good luck with betemit ......

The "Good Swisher" is a patient switch hitter that takes a lot of pitches and draws a lot of walks. His average could probably get as high as .280with a good OBP.

Defensively, he's solid at 1B. The outfield is another story.

My biggest concern for Nick in NY is that he's an emotional guy and you have to kind of handle him with kid gloves.

To provide a little context for the trade, no one I know is really upset with this trade and Nick was a pretty big fan favorite
