didn't even know another was being made

Producer JJ Abrams has issued a statement to Collider, saying the following:

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

Paramount refused to comment at all on the nature of the trailer but, while we can’t say it’s not Cloverfield 2, odds are it isn’t. Even if descriptions of the trailer make it sound like it wants you to believe that.

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield,” producer J.J. Abrams told Collider. “The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

Basically, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a movie once called Valencia, a Bad Robot film that’s long been on Paramount’s release schedule for March 11. That movie is directed by Dan Trachtenberg (Portal: No Escape) and stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. They’re all in the trailer.

Though details have long been kept secret about Valencia, the film reportedly tells the story of a girl who wakes up in a basement and is told she can’t go outside because of a chemical attack. The problem is, she doesn’t know if that’s true or not.

Nothing at any stage of this film’s development made it sound like a Cloverfield sequel, so let’s assume it’s not. Why the title 10 Cloverfield Lane? Well if the film largely takes place at a single residence, an address would make sense. And that address could be “Cloverfield” because that’s the name of the exit you’d used to get to Bad Robot in Santa Monica, CA—hence the original movie having that title.

Miller clarifies that he is indeed still making at least two more Mad Max films....

“That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review,” he said. “She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another ‘Mad Max’ movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another ‘Mad Max.’ It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.”

That jibes with a statement Miller made to Studio 360 a few days ago, where he seemed open to the possibility of doing more himself.

“What happened to Max after ‘Fury Road’? What happened before ‘Fury Road’? What happened to the other characters?” Miller said. “Those stories are there — probably not as the next film but the film after. I’d like to do one of them. We’ll see. As John Lennon said, life is what happens when you’re making other plans. There are so many other directors out there. People are directing younger and younger. They’re getting a real sense of cinema very, very early. There are some great directors out there.”

Rumors came out that he was offered to direct MoS2 and while he didn't exactly said no, his next film won't be it.

“I’ve got something a bit smaller before we go back out into the wasteland — something that’s contemporary that we can get through fairly quickly,” said Miller to Entertainment Weekly last week. “And something with not too much technical difficulty. Something more performance-based and so on, just to clear the exhaust.”

that cloverfield trailer reminded me of that LOST episode's cold open where desmond goes through his daily routine to the "make your own kind of music" song, in the hatch

got great vibes throughout the trailer, will watch, with low expectaions. A thing that bugged me about the first cloverfield was that whole found footage gimmick, nice to see this will play straight forward in the more traditional way

Tom Cruise Brings Star Power To Universal's 'Mummy' Reboot

After months of rumors and denials and more rumors going back to last Thanksgiving, Tom Cruise is officially starring in Universal’s The Mummy. The reboot/remake/etc. of the classic 1932 Boris Karloff horror movie, which itself was rebooted into an enormously successful fantasy action franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in 1999, is supposed to be the start of what Universal hopes will be its connected universe mythology involving their classic monsters library. The film, produced by Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan, and Sean Daniel, directed by Alex Kurtzman, and written by Jon Spaihts, will presumably be the first in an ongoing series of action-centric horror/fantasy films that will theoretically be the equivalent of Walt Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe and/or Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.’s DC Comics movie world.

And as such, getting a movie star like Tom Cruise on-board is a gigantic coup for the first shot across the bow. Moving the film from March 24, 2017 to June 9, 2017 doesn’t hurt either, although these days I wonder which release date is “better.”

If this casting, along with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond) as the title villain, is any indication of plans going forward, then it would appear that Universal is trying to get outright movie stars to headline their monster movies. There was talk awhile back about Angelina Jolie headlining The Bride of Frankenstein, so the confirmation that Cruise is aboard The Mummy would seem to indicate that said rumor at least has a shot at coming to fruition, especially if there are any By the Sea-type passion projects that need funding.

So is Tom going to be the human protagonist good guy or the Mummy that happens to be the protagonist against this female villain?

McG Orbiting ‘Masters Of The Universe’ At Sony

McG is in talks that could lead to him helming Masters Of The Universe, a live-action film based on the signature Mattel toy line that is in high gear at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists and Franklin Entertainment. The film revolves around He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor. Hollywood has been trying to figure out the movie for years, and it could have Transformers potential even if the most identifiable version was the 1987 Cannon film that wasn’t a success and which starred Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. It has been more successful as an animated property.

Disney just dropped the live-action Ghost in the Shell film from its 2017 release schedule but it's not what you think. The film is being made by Stephen Speilberg's Dreamworks, which recently jumped ship from Disney to Universal Pictures. It's a situation that's reminiscent of Legendary Pictures jump from Warner Bros. to Universal back in 2013. Like Dreamworks, Legendary was forced to juggle release dates for several films that were previously set to be released by WB.

Johansson previously stated that filming on Ghost in the Shell is currently scheduled to begin in early-2016. The jump from Disney to Universal could result in a change in shooting schedule and a longer wait than the film's original March 31, 2017 US release date. Look for Universal to announce a new release date for the film in the coming weeks.

UPDATE: Deadline Hollywood reports that Dreamworks is moving ahead with Ghost in the Shell and that the film will keep its origianl March 31, 2017. The site also reports that even though Dreamworks recently closed a distribution deal with Universal, the Ghost in the Shell film will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.
