Pineiro sharp as Cards thump Reds

Hurler notches second win, yielding one hit over seven frames
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- Skip Schumaker and Adam Kennedy set the table, and Rick Ankiel and Troy Glaus cleared it, as the Cardinals cruised to a 7-2 win over Johnny Cueto and the Reds at Busch Stadium on Tuesday night.
Schumaker, who received a day off on Monday after a 1-for-12 slump, had four hits and scored two runs in the leadoff hole for St. Louis. Kennedy, batting second for the first time all year, had two singles and a walk, and also scored twice. Hitting in the fourth and fifth spots in the order, Ankiel and Glaus combined for five hits and five RBIs.

It was more than enough for Pineiro (2-2), whose final line probably overstated how well he pitched. Pineiro allowed only one hit over seven scoreless innings, though he walked four against three strikeouts. He allowed quite a bit of hard contact, but again and again his defense helped him out.

The Cardinals tagged Cueto for three runs in the first and four in the second, each time following basically the same pattern. Both times, Schumaker and Kennedy reached base consecutively, and both times, Ankiel and Glaus delivered run-scoring hits. The final three Cardinals runs scored when Glaus laced a two-run double to left-center, and came all the way around to score when Adam Dunn muffed a throw on the play.

not trying to be a smartass, but First Born, you see the game? not saying it matters or w/e, but we bailed Pineiro out of the first and were rockinghim...only problem was that we hit at least 8 balls right at people.

as i said in the baseball post, Cueto didn't look right. his fastball was barely hitting 92, whereas he's been hitting 96, 97 consistently. dudewas "throwing" and not pitching.

Harang vs. Pooper today. Let's get it.

Adam Dunn continues to hit meaningless homers.

That's why I called Pineiro an impostor, fool is a guranteed loss everytime he takes the mound. With that being said the Reds were clearly theworst baseball team to take the field in the world yesterday if Pineiro beat them

We get a few runs off of Sheets, get 7 walks, and still lose?

Offensive Explosion Leads to Blow Out

Cubs win 19-5
Dempster Goes to 4-0
After Geovany Soto struck out in eight straight at-bats last weekend in Washington, the rookie catcher was pining for a chance to get back inthe lineup.

"I want to play," Soto said. "I don't care if I'm 0-for-30. Playing baseball is my passion."

Manager Lou Piniella handed Soto the day off anyway Sunday, giving him two days of rest with Monday's off day.

The mental break appears to have done the trick for Soto, who hit a pair of three-run homers Wednesday night to lead the Cubs to a 19-5 rout of Milwaukeebefore a crowd of 39,908 at Wrigley Field. It was the Cubs' highest scoring game since beating the Dodgers 20-1 on May 5, 2001.

Soto's career-best day in the majors helped erase the sting of the strikeout streak while getting the Cubs on track after their first bad stretch of theyoung season.

The Cubs finished the month with a 17-10 record, breaking the franchise mark for victories in April, which the star-crossed 1969 team had.

Is the best April in Cubs history an omen for better days, or just another North Side tease a la '69?

That question won't be answered for quite a while, but the Cubs currently have the second-best record in the majors behind Arizona (20-

, and have posteda pair of five-game winning streaks in April for the first time in the club's 133-season history.

Wednesday's game started with a bang against Milwaukee veteran Jeff Suppan (1-1), who allowed 11 runs on 11 hits in 32/3 innings.

After Reed Johnson and Ryan Theriot singled to start the first, Derrek Lee followed with an RBI double off the left-field wall. Aramis Ramirez's two-rundouble made it 3-0 and Soto cranked his first three-run shot of the night three batters later to cap the six-run inning.

But the Cubs weren't finished. Just when it looked like the Brewers had figured out a way to stop Kosuke Fukudome, the new Sports Illustrated cover boycame through in the third with the first infield double in recent memory.

Leading off the third, Fukudome hit a line drive off Suppan's foot that deflected toward first baseman Prince Fielder. But Fielder couldn't handle theshot and Fukudome never stopped running, easily cruising into second before scoring on Mark DeRosa's RBI single.

The Cubs led 9-1 in the fourth when Soto hit his second three-run homer on a 1-0 pitch from reliever Brian Shouse. Soto finished April with 20 RBIs, the mostfor a Cubs rookie since they began keeping records in 1956. He came up again in the sixth with two men on, but struck out against Brewers reliever SethMcClung.

Last night don't mean squat if we lose today and let the Brew take 2 of 3 at Wrigley for the second time this season. Shoulda saved some of those runs fortoday.
