Cubs Find Their Way Back to First
Cubs Beat Reds 5-2
The long road to first place has been a bumpy one for the Cubs, who have endured hitting slumps, injuries,Gatorade-dispenser incidents and a slew of Milton Bradley controversies along the way.
But they finally arrived at their appointed destination Sunday after a 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, taking ahalf-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.
Rich Harden allowed one hit over six innings for his third straight victory since the All-Star break, and Kosuke Fukudomehad two RBIs as the Cubs won their fourth straight and 10th in their last 13 games.
A crowd of 41,528 seemed to enjoy the fact the Cubs overcame a lot of adversity to get to the top spot, though some, like Bradley, downplayed theaccomplishment."It's nice, but I don't think we're going to get any nicer articles written about us," Bradley said. "But we're in firstplace,so you can't find a negative in that."
It really means nothing, after all the Cubs have gone through?
"Am I going to get more cheers now?" he said. "Are we going to stop getting bashed by everybody, articles about our lineup and how it was betterlast year and all that garbage. Last year's team is sitting at home, just like everyone else. There's just one champion."
Actually, Sunday's lineup included seven players from last year's team, and Bradley was cheered after making a nice headfirst slide into home in thethird and a running catch of a foul ball in the fifth.
"I don't notice it," he said.
While the chip remains cemented onto Bradley's shoulder, catcher Koyie Hill took the opposite approach.
"To go through some adversity, it can build a lot of character," Hill said. "But you can go one way or the other. I'm proud to be in theposition we are in, but there's a long way to go, a lot of baseball to be played."
Hill had his first career triple in the two-run eighth inning that sealed the win and was credited with a swipe tag of Edwin Encarnacion on a throw fromFukudome for a double play that ended the top of the eighth.
Plate umpire Laz Diaz blew the call. Replays showed Hill's glove never touched Encarnacion.
"We were fortunate it turned out the way it did," Hill said.
Harden's pitching was the story. After serving up a two-out home run to Joey Votto in the first, he retired the final 16 batters he faced before beingremoved after 90 pitches. He struck out eight and walked none in his first win at Wrigley Field since May 12.
"During the day too," Harden offered, poking fun at the controversy over whether he can pitch only in night games.
Harden said all the commotion over his day-vs.-night stats was "pretty ridiculous," though it was manager LouPiniella who first brought it up. Before the game, Piniella said if Harden pitches like he did in his last two starts, "he can pitch on the equatorin the daytime and still get people out."
Harden finally got the daytime monkey off his back, sending the Cubs into first for the first time since they were tied April 21.
"We're starting to play good baseball when you need to start playing good baseball," Piniella said. "There's a long couple months aheadof us, but we're headed in the right direction. It feels good to be on top. It's only half a game, but we're on top."
The Cubs being back in first place after three months is unbelievable. As bad......no, as horrid, as this offense wasfor much of the year, they have finally found some consistency and find themselves at the top of the division. It's no coincidence that our hot streakstarted pretty much when Aramis came back. He is that valuable to this team. Soriano is starting to get hot. Combine that with Lee, Ramirez, and a betterBradley, and this Cubs team can get on a mighty roll. The pitching has been phenomenal. Hopefully, Lily can come back strong, and Dempster stays injury freefrom here on out.
All that being said, this division will come down to the last week or two. I don't see St. Louis or the Booers going away any time soon.
Game on folks !!!
