***Official 2009 N.L. Central Thread*** Congrats to the Cardinals***

Blame it on Coop. Sampson was great out of the bull but he wore him down using him too much. Now he can't get anybody out lately.

Coop sucks

Anyone need some garbage players? The Brewers should be having a garage sale in the next few days.

who else do you want pitching, Wright? Arias has just come around recently. but our bullpen is really not that good

Man that's nothing, it's a walk-off slam for cryin' out loud, in a 13 inning game. I guess I gotta see it, but that doesn't deserve a beaninganymore than mobbing a dude at home plate does.

Is was real solid before all the injuries started to pile up. Mainly due to overuse. Some had to do with the starters being bad early but Coopused they was too early too often. And now they're feeling the effects.

Arias is okay but Sampson may need another stint on the DL to rest that arm more. He's just totally ineffective going on a month plus now.

he watched the bail sail to center...he slowly dropped his bat...he pointed to his family...he walked slow to first...rounding second he did the "youcan't see me!" till he got to third

You Can't See Me.....Soriano Delivers
Cubs Beat Astros in 13...5-1

It was a night of strange occurrences at Wrigley Field, Cubbie and otherwise.

Ex-Cub LaTroy Hawkins was ejected in the middle of an Aramis Ramirez at-bat in the eighth inning. Milton Bradley, representing the winning run, was thrown out at home on a botched squeeze attempt with one out in the ninth.

And Alfonso Soriano was booed after failing to run out a grounder in the 11th when the umpire ruled he didn't foul the pitch off his foot.

It looked as though the game would last forever before Soriano's 13th-inning grand slam gave the Cubs a 5-1 victory over the Houston Astros.
The Cubs won their fifth straight and 11th in their last 14, retaining a half-game lead over the St..Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.

"I play nine innings all the time," Soriano said. "I had three strikeouts and was 0-for-5, but in that last at-bat, I changed my day. I got thevictory tonight, and I think everybody is happy now."

The Cubs got stellar performances from starter Carlos Zambrano--who pitched seven innings of one-run, three-hit ball--and the bullpen, which contributed sixscoreless innings.

"I'll tell you what, our guys stuck with it, and Soriano ended it in dramatic fashion," manager Lou Piniella said. "Our young pitchingreally did a nice job today."

Astros reliever Chris Sampson walked Derrek Lee on four pitches to start the 13th before Ramirez singled Lee to third. Bradley was walked intentionally beforeSoriano cranked the second pitch over the center-field wall.

Jeff Samardzija (1-1) got the win, pitching to catcher Jake Fox at the end. Fox replaced Koyie Hill in the 10th and proved he can handle another position withaplomb. He saved one high pitch from going to the backstop in the 13th before Samardzija induced an inning-ending double-play grounder.

"That's a real athletic play for a catcher," Piniella said. "He did a wonderful job."

Carlos Lee's prodigious homer over the batter's eye restaurant and Derrek Lee's leadoff homer in the fourth were the only runs off startersZambrano and Wandy Rodriguez. Hawkins was ejected by plate umpire Mike Everitt when he ignored Everitt's order to stop complaining about the strike zone.

The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before Piniella called for a suicide squeeze that blew up in his face. Mike Fontenot couldn't makecontact, leaving Bradley a dead duck.

"Fastball, 97 [m.p.h.], and I didn't get the bat on it," Fontenot said.

But it was Soriano who looked like the goat in the 11th when he stood at the plate on a grounder to third. Everitt ruled the ball was in play, though Sorianoinsisted it went off his foot for a foul.

"I told him, if I say the ball hit me in my foot, it hit me in my foot," Soriano said. "I don't have to lie."

Soriano got an earful from the crowd of 40,794 but made up for it two innings later.

"It was a long evening," Piniella said. "But it was well worth it."

Soriano mocking one of the worst wrestlers and one I personally hate of all time. But it's working and him batting at the six spot solidifys the bottomlineup a little bit. Moreso when Soto comes back. Just imagine if DeRosa was still here.....anyways.....a good win. Not really overall satisfied becauseI'm still mad at the botched squeeze play. No excuse, at least make contact with the ball so it would be a foul ball. Glad it didn't come back to hurtus....but against more elite teams like Philly, LA, etc, no excuse. We got to get better in these close situations cuz guess what, if we make the postseason, games like this where we score only one run.....I almost guarantee the games won't go into extra innings.

I want to celebrate the fact that we are in 1st and I want to celebrate Sori's grand Slam from the six spot, but I have a question. Why didnt it happensooner?

The Cubs, should be in first place. They have a massive payroll and a team that is built to win it all. I am not gonna celebrate that wefinally got there. In such a mediocre division we should have been all along.

Why did it take so long to make Sori bat lower in the order? It is clearly better for him and the team. Why wasnt this adjustment made sooner? I have a hardtime being excited when I feel like there is so much bumbling going on.

The ball landed before Sori left the batter's box.

That dude facin chin music at some point in this series, and it may empty the benches. And the Astros have every right if they want to throw a warning shot, just as we have every right to defend Sori if it happens.

This series just got more interesting.

We have only been at full strength for 1 game this season. Its not like we got regular ole joe schmo getting hurt... DL- Aramis, Lilly, Dempster,Soto, Harden, Lee... These are all above avg players. It just finally seems like we are putting it together! Kinda off topic, BUT I wish their was a way thecubs could trade Soto for Victor Martinez.

i wish we would make a trade for a bat...im not satisfied especially with the cards mark d. and matt h.

I actually didn't think the Cubs had what it takes to get the NL Central lead back.

The NL Central and NL Wild Card races will be very interesting to watch. The NL West and NL East.....not so much,
