Predictions:
Black Friday is almost here and and after researching 2010's shopping trends and using our knowledge on the shopping holiday, we have come up with some predictions for November 26, 2010. Here, you can get a sneak peak into what items will go on sale, the expected prices of these items, and which retailers will feature the best discounts.
Televisions
HDTVs are always a popular product discounted on Black Friday. Stores like Best Buy, Amazon.com and Walmart will heavily discount plasma, LED and LCD HDTVs. The televisions that go on sale typically fall into 32" to 46" category, but you will see some reduced prices on 50" to 55" HDTVs as well. 2010 will feature some of the lowest prices ever on 32" LCD HDTVs, which will be available for around $199 and 19" models will be marketed for as low as $99. 42" LCD and plasma televisions are expected to be priced anywhere between $400 and $500 and 50" televisions will be marked down anywhere between $550 and $650. The cheaper televisions will most likely be 720p and not have as many features as the more expensive models.
Laptops and Computers
On Black Friday, computers are the must have item. Typically, the most popular laptops that go on sale have a 15.4" display, 2-4GB of memory, 250GB-320GB hard drive, and feature the latest processors from AMD or Intel. On the shopping holiday, we expect these laptops to be available for around $250 to $350 and the larger laptops, which feature a larger hard drive, bigger display, and more memory, will run as low as $450.
Making its mark on Black Friday 2010 are Internet tablets. Known as 2010's Tickle Me Elmo, these gadgets are expected to be the major product sold on Black Friday. The most desired item this year is the Apple iPad. While we do not expect this product to go on sale, we expect retailers to offer various bundles which combine a tablet PCs with gift cards and free accessories.
GPS Systems
Last year, GPS navigation systems were a hot item on Black Friday. Unfortunately for retailers, the demand for these gadgets has declined. In order to increase their appeal, stores will mark down prices on the latest models that include features such as free lifetime road map updates, traffic updates, and larger LCD screens. These newer models from brands including Garmin and TomTom will be available for $120 to $150. For consumers on a budget, we are expecting to see 3.5" models run as low as $40.
DVD Players and MP3 Players
In 2009, Blu-ray players and iPods were some of the most popular electronics sold on Black Friday. In 2010, you can expect even more savings on name brands such as Apple, Sony, Toshiba, and Samsung. Blu-ray players, stacked with the latest features, will be available for $70 to $80. Blu-ray movies are also expected to be reduced, with older titles being offered for about $5 and new releases being marked down to $10. With the release of the new Apple iPods, we are expecting them to be big sellers in 2010. Typically iPods are not available at discounted prices. But, in order to keep consumer interest, major stores will offer free iTunes gift certificates and accessories with the purchase of new models.
Digital Cameras
In previous years, digital cameras were the must have item on Black Friday. In 2010 there will continue to be a steady demand for new models. On November 26th, you will be able to purchase name brands such as Sony, Canon, and Kodak for as low as $75. Despite cameras being the must have items in previous years, the new craze this year is camcorders. HD-capable camcorders will be heavily discounted for the first time ever. Prices will vary depending on brand and features, but you can expect prices to fall between $80 and $120.
Video Games
With the release of new games and new console technology, video games are going to continue to be a popular stocking stuffer on Black Friday. For new games that are released in the fall, consumers can expect them to be bundled with free gift certificates and other promotions. Also, with both Microsoft and Sony are releasing new console technology, we expect the Microsoft Kinect and the Sony Playstation Move to be big sellers during Black Friday 2010.
Other
When you think of Black Friday most people automatically think of toys. The shopping holiday is the time to save on the season's must have toys and in 2010 you will save on Silly Bandz, Lego building sets, Zhu Zhu Pets, board games, and electronic toys. The best discounts will be seen at Walmart, Toys R Us, and Target and you can expect savings at up to 70% off the normal retail price. Holiday decor is another category that is heavily discounted on Black Friday. Although customers do not flock to stores to at 6am to purchase wrapping paper, if you are in the market for a new Christmas tree, outdoor lights, or holiday decorations, the day after Thanksgiving is the time to buy. Typically, after Christmas sales feature the lowest prices on these holiday items, but if you are in the market for a Christmas tree this holiday season, we suggest you purchase it on Black Friday.
Online Shopping
Black Friday online shopping has increased significantly in the last five years. In 2010, we predict online sales and doorbuster deals to explode. Major retailers such as Amazon.com, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy are expected to put their Black Friday specials online on Thanksgiving Day. Not only can you skip the lines and crowds, but you can purchase this season's must have items a day earlier. Plus, they will having early Black Friday sales where they offer items at prices just as good as what you'll find on the day after Thanksgiving. All of this combined is sure to make Black Friday 2010 one of the best yet.
