It all DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU LIVE.
People from Cali can get away with a regular wool coat w/ thinsulate but that ain't doing much here in Toronto for the most part (well, unless if you have leather skin like us Canucks). I can get by with a knit sweater + wool/cashmere blend on a -20c weather.

well of course, location is the main factor. that's obvious. a wool coat works well for me. i live in ny, it gets cold but not too bad.
you canadians have to deal with below zero temperatures which i'm not jealous of.
