RUUTU OFF THE TRADING BLOCK - SIGNS 4YR EXTENSION

Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford removed Tuomo Ruutu from any further trade talk on Wednesday when he re-signed the right wing to a four-year, $19 million extension.

The deal will pay Ruutu $4 million in 2012-13, and $5 million per the following three seasons.

"Players like Tuomo are extremely difficult to replace, and it is very important for our franchise to keep him here long term," Rutherford told the Hurricanes' website. "Along with the physical elements and skill level that he brings on the ice, Tuomo is a popular leader in our locker room. We are very happy that he has committed to what we are building here, and is excited about what the future holds for the Hurricanes."

If Ruutu didn't sign an extension, there would have likely been several teams lining up for his services.

Since the work stoppage in 2004-05, Ruutu has played 435 games and has 105 goals and 251 points. In 57 games this season, he has 17 goals and 30 points. Ruutu has played in four-plus seasons in Raleigh.

The Vantaa, Finland, native is second on the team in hits (106) and tied for fourth on the team with a plus-3 rating. He played in his 500th career NHL game on Dec. 31 at Tampa Bay, and had a six-game point streak from Dec. 15-27 (5 goals, 2 assists).

that arena is ATROCIOUS! you can literally sit anywhere you want if you pay the usher 20 bucks and no one cares. it was only moderately busy cause of some kids promo thing

^ I doubt it.

They are gonna get an aged veteran, and give up a draft pick, then trade Bernier for nothing in return.

I can almost bet on it.

Then Dean Lombardi will be no more at the end of the season.

I know, when the Jets had a game there earlier this season I swear the arena was louder after the Jets scored than the Panthers

i think JJ and a 1st is a pretty good haul for Columbus. like you said i'm surprised Bernier wasnt in the deal

Dry Island, Part 2: Los Angeles.

Kings' fans are going to be begging to move Carter by year 5 of his deal (at the latest).

Someone said the people most excited about the Jeff Carter trade are all the bar owners in LA

And with the win tonight the Jets are leading the SE division

It's Florida man, they have the worst fans in the entire country IMO.  Wait until the Panthers make the playoffs, the arena will be MOBBED.  Just like for the Rays, Marlins, Dolphins, etc...

I'm pretty surprised at this acquisition actually.  I heard that they had put together a package for both Nash and Carter but it was nixed.
I don't like the contract though.  JJ will be missed for sure, but at the same time, glad to see Slava Voynov get called up.  Hope he sticks.

Of course Vancouver had to be the team that snapped the streak. My hate for that team is only matched by the Sharks. Wings aren't the same team when Pasha is out.

I've been reading some articles about Dustin Brown coming to The Bruins. I think he's a great player and someone that could help the team with the physicality. He's got good hands and can score goals. I just don't know who PC would trade for him. I already like our core group of forwards.
