OFFICIAL HOCKEY THREAD: NHL, KHL, NCAA, IIHL

The way his shin went into that post......definitely broken.

Aaron Ward is saying broken tibia and it will require surgery.

Brutal.

Sochi allegedly still not completely out of the picture...

I wouldnt wanna see him selected, comin back from this right into the Olympics isnt ideal.

Wow that's awful for him...hope he recovers well and gets back to his pre-injury form eventually, that hurt my leg just watching it. Even in all my yrs playing I've never seen a leg go into a post like that. Downside of having those deep pegs that don't budge easily

Yo... i was just thinkin that no lie last night before i fell asleep n watched it again on SC.

Think about it. It could have litterally been the best powerplay in the history of hockey... crosbys passing and stamkos sniping.

:x

You could argue the best to ever do what they do. Like stammer isnt gunna play even 20 games this season its lookin like and is still gunna avg 40 goals per year. Yuck :x

Feel terrible for the kid

and all of us..

Now TC jus has to depend on crosby tavares.getzlaf.staal.duchene... damn. Haha this is horrible but at the same time happy for whoever ultimately gets his spot i guess. :(

Really? We're putting Stamkos and Crosby at Lemieux and Gretzky levels now? No.

Im talkin this generation. This is like the jerry rice vs megatron discussion. I dont think you can even compare dif generations like that but in my lifetime yes sid n stammer will go down as two of the goats

In the history of hockey def over the top hyperbole but as far as what we'll see in our lifetime... Second to none I bet

I didn't even realize n the past 5 seasons no one has more pts than stamkos or goals. He has almost a big enough cushion that ovi still will barely pass him and he won't even play 20 games that's cray

Sid/Stamkos are on the path to greatness...however, neither are, or will be, in the stratosphere of Gretzky/Lemieux.

Think about their greatness playing in an era of clutching/grabbing, traps, etc. THe game today is 100% different, and 99/66 would have flourished even more (if that's possible) than they did back in their day.

I wont argue they are the best of this generation. You're right there. But in your original post you said all time.... which they are not. It can be discussed when they are in their twilight, but even then, Gretz and Lemieux are just on another level.

As for points in last 5 years, Stamkos is only 11 ahead of Henrik Sedin, so its not a huge gap.

Goalie were worse, defesnes are more sophisticated, you can't under estimate that, nobody is scoring like they scered in the 80's and 90's

Stamkos will never match Gretz and Lemeiux in terms as completle players but as a pure goal scorer? Stamkos is an all timer and completley in the same atmosphere.

Adjusted Goals. illustrates this (goals adjusted for era )

Rank Player G/A Season

2. Brett Hull* 78 1990-91

4. Alex Ovechkin 72 2007-08
5. Mario Lemieux* 71 1988-89
6. ****ey Weiland* 70 1929-30
Phil Esposito* 70 1970-71
8. Wayne Gretzky* 69 1983-84
9. Wayne Gretzky* 68 1981-82
Babe Dye* 68 1924-25
Steven Stamkos 68 2011-12
12. Howie Morenz* 67 1927-28

Stamkos is an all time guy, a once in a generation goal scoring talent.

I'm not following the stat you posted.

I am in no way denying Stamkos' talent. However in COMPARISON to Gretzky/Lemieux, he's not in the same ballpark...even scoring goals.

What's a "pure" goal scorer?

Thats all i was really tryna say... in terms of skill sets we can all agree sid is a top 3 passer of any generation and stamkos is on the road to be one of best pure goal scorers to ever do it. No one had a problem callin Ovechkin the Great 8 and proclaiming he was one of the best goal scorers ever but stamkos has surpassed even his standards and until this fluke accident was a model for durability. Like i said hes gunna miss 60 plus games this season and stillll have put up 40 goals per last 5 years. In todays nhl thats bonkers

A pure goal scorer is someone who can slapshot. Wrist shot. Dangle. Jus find ways to score. Ala Stamkos. Ovechkin. Semin. Phil kessel. Etx

One that really sticks out is kovalchuck.

Stamkos would flourish in any era. His skills translate well . Wish he played somewhere other than TB so folks could see him daily.

I think you all are misinterpreting what I'm saying. I'm ONLY comparing Stamkos to the likes of Lemieux/Gretzky....based soley off of the pic that was posted on the other page. Not once have I dismissed his overall talent. The bar is unrealistically high when comparing ANY NHL player to Lemieux/Gretzky. To me, there isn't a bigger discrepancy in sports when comparing athletes. I mean, you can make arguments for Mike/Kobe...Jerry Rice/Megatron...etc. etc....however, I completely believe that 99/66 are without peers due to how dominant they were.

What's a "pure" goal scorer?

It adjust goals for the scoring environment, basically how easy or difficult it was to score goals in a given year.

For example, Wayne Gretzky's 92 goal season vs Brett Hulls, 86.

In 1982 there were 10 50 goal scores, in 1991 there were only 4..

by 91 defenses got better, goalies training and coaching was just starting to take hold, because of many factors it was MUCH more difficult to get 86 in 1992 than 91 1982.

'92 Brett Hull is pretty much inarguably was the greatest goal scoring season of all time.

so in a neutral scoring environment, top 10 gaol scoring list should really look like this

1 Brett Hull* 78

2. Alex Ovechkin 72
3. Mario Lemieux* 71
4. ****ey Weiland*
5 Phil Esposito* 70
6. Wayne Gretzky* 69
7. Wayne Gretzky* 68
8Babe Dye* 68
9 Steven Stamkos 68

Steven Stamkos 60 is right there with Lemix and Gretsky.

Like I said, Stamkos is an all time elite goal scoring talent on the level of ANYONE who ever played the game, including Gretz and Lemieux.

100% agree.

Imo opinion, if your making a top all time goal scorer list, assuming he gets healthy and returns to form its going to be difficult to leave Stamkos name off it.

Hull
Ovechkin
Gretzky
Lemiuex

???
Those 4 are basically locks,

Bure when healthy... maybe

as complete players I agree jjs

66/99>>>>>> all by a long country mile, but just putting pucks in the net? '

Ovechkin, Hull, and Stamkos is/were just as dangerous.

Its funny people bring up how much better goalies and defenses are now.

It goes both ways... you think Gretz was a gym rat? Can you imagine what he'd have been like had he the trainers, nutritionists, ect that Stamkos has access to?

And if it was a much easier game in the 80's, why wasn't there another player scoring 200+ points a year consistently?

Anyway, its a difficult argument to say the least. Im not changing anyone's opinion and I have stated what I think so I'll leave it at that.

They weren't your miss understanding me, Gretzky and Lemiux are the greatest because they COMBINED all time top 2 passing with all time top 5 scoring, they were literally the perfect hockey players, they were savants, geniuses, something about their brain was wired for this game.

but JUST goal scoring, to say that they weren't other players in their atmosphere simply isn't true.

also the nutrition thing doesn't hold water because all the players have access to it, any gains they make would be offset by the gains of the competition.

Nah it doesnt go both ways... which is why adjusted stats can even be compiled.

Edit: nevermind. I dont want ppl believin i dont think super marios isnt the greatest ever

The Blackhawks and Penguins will be taking the ice at Soldier Field on March 1 to play one of three Stadium Series games the NHL is hosting this season.

In honor of the upcoming series, the league decided to create a new look for the teams playing in the outdoor games by adding a chrome filter to each team logo.

Here's a look at the Blackhawks' Chrome Collection design. Same logo, different editing tool.

Same goes for the Penguins, Islanders, Rangers, Ducks and Kings.

But the New Jersey Devils had a slight change made as the green was added into their logo.

The NHL is expected to release the new jerseys for the series sometime in the next few weeks.

I LOVE that Devils logo...green puts it over the top.

Is there a way to adjust the scoring to see how Gretzky/Lemieux would have done in today's league? I honestly don't put much stock into adjusted stats....but it is interesting.
