Official MLB Offseason Post: Michael Young asks for a trade.
Giants, Cubs Discussed Rowand-Fukudome Swap
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 17, 2010 at 12:24pm CST]

The Giants and Cubs discussed a trade that would have sent Kosuke Fukudome to San Francisco for Aaron Rowand, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (all Twitter links). The bad contract swap appears to be a "long shot," however. If they can't trade Rowand, the Giants may listen to offers for Nate Schierholtz, according to Crasnick.

Cubs GM Jim Hendry pulled off a successful bad contract swap last offseason when he sent Milton Bradley to Seattle for Carlos Silva. Pulling off another such trade will be tricky, though. Rowand will earn $24MM through 2012 and Fukudome will become a free agent after earning $13.5MM in 2011, so the contracts are not perfect matches. Rowand has a limited no-trade clause and Fukudome has no-trade protection, so a potential deal could require the players' approval.

I'd say so. Re-signing Jeter (to play shortstop), and losing out on Crawford and Lee, really hurts this team. I spoke on this before, but it's not far fetched that this puts them down for 2 or 3 years.

Ultimately, it's hard to speak on the next few years, but this upcoming season doesn't look promising if I'm a Yankees fan.

yankees will be fine. they were 2 wins away from reaching the world series again. not everyone will come to ny and thats a fact. not surprised lee didnt come after the spitting incident and i dont blame him. i honestly didn't want him. yea he beats us but giving him 7 years is way too much especially since he's turning 33 next year. definitely would have overspent. we dont need crawford when we have gardner and granderson. AJ had a down year but lets just see how he does this year. only thing i'm worried about on the team is pitching. i just want kerry wood back and i'll be happy to be honest.

Actually, Yankees fans have a reason to be a little nervous. If they don't develop another arm or two and AJ turns into Oliver Perez, things are gonna get ugly. I give them 3 years to make a run (just like the Phillies) before it's time to rebuild.
Not a huge signing. But the Sox arent done working on the bullpen.
RHP Dan Wheeler signs with Red Sox
BOSTON -- The Great Bullpen Reconstruction continued Saturday, with the Red Sox announcing a deal with another veteran setup man, right-hander Dan Wheeler.

Wheeler, one of the reliable pieces Joe Maddon employed in Tampa Bay for the past three years who is averaging 68 appearances per season, is leaving the Rays to return to his native New England.

Wheeler, a native of Warwick, R.I. (he was selected by the Rays out of Pilgrim High School in the 34th round of the 1997 draft), signed a one-year deal with an option for a second year that vests if he makes 65 appearances.

Last season, Wheeler was 2-4 with a 3.35 ERA for the Rays. He pitched in the eighth inning in the majority of his 64 appearances last season, though he also pitched 22 times in the sixth and seventh innings. He is expected to be used more as a sixth- and seventh-inning man by the Red Sox.

Wheeler also pitched parts of two seasons with the Mets and 3½ seasons with Houston. He turned 33 on Dec. 10.

These comments will be all over next year. Even though we all know 95% of Yankees fans have been talking about getting Lee since he mowed em down with the Phillies the first time. And Crawford has been a Yankee since midway through last season once outfielders started getting injured.

But I will say there are some that legitimately didnt care either way where Lee went. I got a guy at my office that feels like if their players just played to their contracts then they would be fine and they wouldnt need to go after all the best FAs every year.
