WALKER'S CONDITIONING CAUSES CONCERN
So how is receiver Javon Walker repaying the Oakland Raiders for taking a leap of faith on him, giving him a big pile of guaranteed money despite concerns regarding lingering knee trouble?
By showing up for offseason workouts out of shape.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that there are concerns about Walker's conditioning. In March, Walker signed a six-year, $55 million contract, with $18 million in guaranteed money.
If it's true that Walker has decided to let himself go, perhaps he was influenced in part by the team's misguided effort to spread misinformation about the true value of Walker's deal, after the Raiders faced some immediate criticism for paying Walker so much money. Typically, NFL teams will stand silent even when a player or his agent are overstating the terms of a contract, in order to ensure that the player remains happy and content. It's unprecedented (with the exception of Walker's case) for a team to quibble inaccurately with the terms of a contract that a player has signed.

Evans, in last year of five-year contract, receives offer from Bills
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- With most of the free-agent feeding frenzy complete, the Buffalo Bills appear to be zeroing in on signing one of their own free agents to-be.
Receiver Lee Evans confirmed Monday the Bills have made him a contract offer that would prevent the five-year veteran from becoming a free agent following the 2008 season. Evans, Buffalo's leading receiver the past two years, is currently in the final year of a five-year deal he signed after Buffalo selected him with the 13th overall pick in the 2004 draft.
Evans didn't talk about any details of the offer and the Bills didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Evans, who had minor surgery on his shoulder this offseason, will likely command a salary comparable to that of Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald, a two-time Pro Bowler, inked a four-year, $40 million contract -- with $30 million guaranteed -- in March.

Andre Johnson has knee scoped
May 19, 2008
By Nick Schenck, HoustonTexans.com
The knee injury that sidelined wide receiver Andre Johnson for the majority of the 2007 season has crept up again.
Coach Gary Kubiak announced Monday after the Texans' first OTA workout that Johnson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after last weekend's mini-camp, and the fifth-year veteran will miss the remainder of the team's offseason workouts.
"We went back and forth with the knee throughout the offseason," Kubiak said. "It wasn't feeling the way (Andre) wanted it to feel. So we tried to do some things, some rest and those types of things, to get it better.
"He wasn't really comfortable coming out of (mini-)camp, so we said, 'Hey, let's go scope it and see if there are any issues. We want you to feel comfortable.' Everything was fine. They cleaned it up. Now he feels good about it. He's not going to be hurt by missing some of these reps, so we'll just get him back to 100 percent and get him ready to go."
The good news is that Johnson should be ready for training camp at the end of July.
"Yeah, he should be fine for training camp," Kubiak said. "You all see him out here walking around today. Actually, it's peace of mind for all of us, to be honest for you."

BLAKELY, Ga. (AP)-New Orleans Saints defensive end Charles Grant has been indicted on a charge of involuntary manslaughter stemming from a February altercation at a nightclub.
Grant, who was stabbed in the neck during the fracas, was charged by an Early County grand jury that also charged Laquient Macklin with felony murder and feticide in the shooting death of Korynda Reed, 23. Reed died after being taken to the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, after the fight early Feb. 3.
The indictment was posted on the Web site of the Early County News on Tuesday.
"We are aware and have no comment," Saints spokesman Greg Bensel said.
District Attorney Charles M. Ferguson could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.
Sheriff's Capt. Will Caudill said at the time of the melee that there was no known connection between Grant and Reed. He said the fight started inside the club and then moved outside, and Grant was attacked after shots were fired.
Woodrow Gray was indicted on a charge of aggravated assault in the knife attack on Grant, a former University of Georgia star from nearby Colquitt.
Grant was selected by the Saints in the first round of the 2002 NFL draft. He had 2 1/2 sacks in 2007 while starting 14 games for the Saints and has 38 1/2 over his six-year career.
In addition to Grant and Macklin, and Marshae Stromer, Anthony Wilson, Jarvis Tinson, Rodreaco Gray and Woodrow Gray were charged with involuntary manslaughter for alleged participation in the fight.
Grant also received misdemeanor fighting charges

Raiders release S Schweigert, LB Gbaja-Biamila
ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders released safety Stuart Schweigert on Tuesday, cutting ties with a former starter who lost his job late last season.
Schweigert, a third-round pick out of Purdue in 2004, became the starter at free safety midway through his second season in Oakland and started 37 consecutive games before being replaced last season.
Schweigert lost his job to Hiram Eugene when he was forced to miss a game with an injured calf and then played as a backup in the final five contests of the season.
Schweigert struggled at times last season as a run-stopper and the Raiders set out to improve their tackling at safety this offseason by signing Gibril Wilson from the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
Wilson lined up mostly as a strong safety during last week's practice open to the media, with former first-round pick Michael Huff shifting to his more natural position of free safety. That left little room for Schweigert, who missed the open practice with a leg injury.
Schweigert had 215 tackles and four interceptions in 63 games with the Raiders. He also had 20 passes defensed, four fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
The Raiders also released linebacker Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, signed as a free agent earlier this offseason.
The Raiders began their second week of offseason practices Tuesday in a session closed to the media. It was the first time running back Darren McFadden and quarterback JaMarcus Russell got to work together.
McFadden, the No. 4 overall pick in last month's draft, was not allowed at last week's practices because he is a rookie. Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in 2007, was not at the rookie minicamp the previous week.

The Saints are continuing to rave about Robert Meachem's offseason progress.
Meachem reportedly appeared "healthy, fluid and comfortable" running routes at Wednesday's OTA. The 2007 first-round pick is battling Devery Henderson to be New Orleans' third receiver behind David Patten and Marques Colston, although Patten's job isn't guaranteed. This is a positive sign after last offseason's problems, but ultimately it's offseason fluff until he shows something on the field.
BIG MEACH!!!
