Official NHL Regular Season Thread... Capitals win President's trophy

They've been getting some great goaltending during the streak.  Let's see how that holds up after the hiatus and in the playoffs.

Partially salty, because I thought I was finished seeing J.S. Gigurere
Kovy-to-Kings nearly done
9:37AM ET

[h5]Ilya Kovalchuk | Thrashers | Interested: Devils?, Rangers?, Bruins?, Kings? [/h5]

[h5]Kovalchuk's rumored suitors[/h5]
The Los Angeles Kings might be close to acquiring Ilya Kovalchuk, according to a source for From The Rink. But we have some conflicting reports, as Bob McKenzie of TSN says this rumor is "BS," adding, "Some interest but fit isn't right at this point."

Let's assume it's true for now, for speculation sake. From what we've previously heard, Thrashers GM Don Waddell initially asked for http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3583http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3583http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3583Jack Johnson and/or http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3924http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3924http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3924Oscar Moller or http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3817http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3817http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3817Wayne Simmonds, prospects, draft picks and 2009 first rounder http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=5219http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=5219http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=5219Brayden Schenn. But if this deal goes through, expect the Kings to give up less.

Waddell has been seen at Kings games, possibly figuring out which guys he wants in this deal. The other likely suitor is the Bruins, but trade talks didn't start off well when GM Peter Chiarelli refused to discuss the 2010 first-round pick he received from the Leafs for Phil Kessel.

We know the New York Rangers have also made a low-ball offer, and we've heard rumblings that the New Jersey Devils might also step up to the plate. Also, there is some buzz that the Calgary Flames will make one big run at Kovalchuk after dealing away Dion Phaneuf.

But the Kings are the obvious favorites and, if this deal goes down, they'll likely have done it without talking to Kovalchuk or his agent.

Keep in mind that Kings GM Dean Lombardi has said he doesn't want to trade for Kovalchuk as a rental, so he may look to re-sign the winger in the offseason.

http://
Inside Whitney trade talks
9:37AM ET

[h5]Ray Whitney | Hurricanes [/h5]

Amidst the Ilya Kovalchuk-to-Kings reports, TSN's Bob McKenzie says the Kings have pursued http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1020http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1020http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1020http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1020Ray Whitney. (McKenzie says the Kovy rumors are false.) Apparently the negotiations between the Kings and Hurricanes got so far that the Kings had permission to talk to Whitney about a potential extension.

But Whitney has a no-trade clause, and he said he would only waive it if the Kings gave him a three-year extension, sources told McKenzie. The Kings said no.

Meanwhile, Whitney's trade stock might skyrocket as the trade deadline approaches. ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun thinks the Hurricanes can get a prospect and/or a pick for him; ESPN.com's Scott Burnside even went as far as to say he might be worth the Bruins 2010 first-round pick acquired from the Leafs (although that pick won't be traded.)

However, since the Hurricanes are looking for picks and prospects, this presents a money problem for Whitney suitors. Teams are taking on Whitney's $3.55 million cap hit while letting go of nothing. That means teams like the Senators won't be involved in the bidding.

So who's interested? Lots of teams have been rumored to be looking this direction, including the Penguins, Bruins, Blue Jackets, Flyers, Sabres and Devils.

http://
Pens wants Ponikarovsky with Malkin
9:12AM ET

[h5]Alexei Ponikarovsky | Maple Leafs [/h5]

The Pittsburgh Penguins might be eying Alexei Ponikarovsky because they think he would be a nice fit with Evgeni Malkin, the Toronto Sun reports.

Previously, Leafs GM Burke hinted that he wouldn't be able to get a first rounder for Ponikarovsky, which surprised CBC's Elliotte Friedman. But it might also be an indication that Burke has tried to finagle a first rounder out of a suitor and failed.

We knew the Pens were scouting Ponikarovsky heavily; Pens' head scout Derek Clancey has been seen watching the Leafs several times. He'd be a short-term rental, given that he's in the final year of his contract, which pays him $2.5 million this year. But the Pens might also be in on http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1020Ray Whitney and http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=434Paul Kariya, so it will be interesting to see where these forward rentals land.

As for Ponikarovsky's thoughts on playing with Malkin, he said it "would be fun."

http://
Plekanec to Flames?
8:56AM ET

[h5]Tomas Plekanec | Canadiens [/h5]

It's widely believed the http://www.calgarysun.com/sports/hockey/2010/02/03/12716986-qmi.htmlCalgary Flames aren't done moving yet, and the Calgary Sun's Randy Sportak speculates that they'll go after Mike Ribeiro or Tomas Plekanec.

Just to get Flames' fans' heartbeats up a bit, he mentioned the names Eric Staal, Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards -- but quickly added that all those deals are unlikely.

The Flames will be looking for a top-three center in the market, and they'll certainly have some wingers to deal, as we previously mentioned. The Flames have also put C Jamie Lundmark on the market, according to CBC's Elliotte Friedman, so it appears they will most definitely target centers.

One Calgary writer doesn't think another trade is imminent.

http://
Bruins trading Ryder
8:49AM ET

[h5]Michael Ryder | Bruins [/h5]

The Boston Bruins have put Michael Ryder on the market, TSN's Bob McKenzie writes, and it's possible that they're looking to upgrade on offense.

There's been buzz that the Bruins are looking at Ilya Kovalchuk and Ray Whitney. TSN's Darren Dreger writes, "There is an expectation in Boston that the Bruins will contend for the conference title and Stanley Cup, but in order to do that, Peter Chiarelli may have to make a bold move. He's not afraid to do it ... he's proven that in the past."

http://
Shark' trade plans
8:21AM ET

[h5]San Jose Sharks [/h5]

The San Jose Sharks were apparently eying Leafs D Ian White until the Flames picked him up in the Dion Phaneuf swap, TSN reports.

But the Sharks may still be looking for some blueline depth -- preferably a cheap, young defenseman.

Meanwhile, the Sharks have eight players going to the Olympics so they may have to dig deeper on their depth chart to give their top players a rest.

http://
Ribeiro, Turco might be dealt
8:09AM ET

[h5]Dallas Stars [/h5]

The Dallas Stars might be quite active near the trade deadline, and they might shop Mike Ribeiro, Steve Ott, Fabian Brunnstrom and Marty Turco.

That buzz comes from TSN's Darren Dreger who adds, "The word is the Stars are likely to cut payroll for next season. To what degree, we can't be sure, but if Dallas stumbles in the coming weeks and falls out of the playoff picture, all bets are off."

We previously thought the Leafs were working on the trade for Ribeiro, but after the Dion Phaneuf acquisition, they may have to reshape the deal for it to work. Meanwhile, a handful of teams might be interested in Turco.

The Stars might be looking to dump salary, but they might also be eying a young goaltender. Jaroslav Halak, Cory Schneider and Kari Lehtonen have been raised as possible trade targets.

http://
Hawks swapping Sharp for D?
8:04AM ET

[h5]Andrej Meszaros | Lightning [/h5]

The Chicago Blackhawks might look to trade for blueline depth, and TSN's Darren Dreger is hearing that they're interested in Tampa Bay Lightning D Andrei Meszaros.

However, Dreger says Meszaros will be expensive -- both in the trade and the money sense -- so the Hawks will have to give up Patrick Sharp, Kris Versteeg or Cam Barker to get this deal done.

Meszaros, 24, is a $4 million cap hit through 2015, which is when the Blackhawks would have to re-sign Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews again.

http://
Sykora to Rangers?
[h5]New York Rangers [/h5]

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=920http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=920http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=920Petr Sykora will probably sign with a team this week, USA Today's Kevin Allen tweets. Previously, we heard there were four team interested in the veteran.

Teams that have previously shown interest are the http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=otthttp://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=ottOttawa Senators, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nyrhttp://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nyrNew York Rangers, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=tamhttp://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=tamTampa Bay Lightning and http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=dalhttp://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=dalDallas Stars, as well as the Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks.

The http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=atlAtlanta Thrashers might also be interested.

http://
Hints on next Flames trade
7:39AM ET

[h5]Calgary Flames [/h5]

The Calgary Flames might not be done moving after dealing away Dion Phaneuf. As TSN's Bob McKenzie points out, they have too many wingers (10) which has to mean moves are on the way.

There has been recent buzz that GM Darryl Sutter will make one big push for Ilya Kovalchuk near the deadline -- another winger -- but if the cost turns out to be too high, they might trade for another top-six forward. In any swap, they may look to deal away a few of their 10 wingers.

Targets might include Ray Whitney and Alex Tanguay, but both trades might cost the Flames a lot of valuable assets since demand might be high. Still, the Calgary Sun writes, "If there's ever been a year Sutter would be willing to overpay, this might be it."

There's also been buzz that they're talking to the Blues about a potential trade. Also, they might grab Thrashers F Colby Armstrong.

http://
Canes deal today?
7:30AM ET

[h5]Carolina Hurricanes [/h5]

The http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=carhttp://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=carCarolina Hurricanes may have to make a trade soon with two injured players returning but not enough roster spots to let them play. They could send D Brett Carson back to Albany, but John Forslund of 620 The Buzz said that's the last thing Carolina wants to do.

So who's moving? Well here's the list of guys on the block: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1020http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1020Ray Whitney, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=182http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=182Matt Cullen, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1041http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1041Stephane Yelle, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=994http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=994Scott Walker, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3084http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3084Andrew Alberts, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1001http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1001Aaron Ward, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=996http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=996Niclas Wallin and http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=531http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=531Manny Legace Though it's unlikely the Canes will be able to part with all these guys, they may do whatever is necessary to get rid of them by next season.

Whitney and Wallin were asked to waive their no-trade clauses, but the last we heard, they haven't done so.

The only guys who won't move are http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=2378Eric Staal, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1671Cam Ward, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3791Brandon Sutter, http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=1908Tim Gleason and http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=2190Tuomo Ruutu. But, hey, a good offer might push them to move the latter two guys as well.

I am starting to love hockey's trade deadline more than the MLB trade deadline, this $!*+ is intense.

I really hope McPhee doesn't make any trades...I love the team how it is, and barring a catastrophic injury, the roster needs to stay as is.  The team is playing GREAT defense, and we're getting quality goaltending with Varlamov close to making his return. Hopefully the boys can keep it up....

I feel the same way in regards to pulling a trade. McPhee can derail this flow if he's not careful. I credit the streak to the defense we're playing. Varlamov is getting the job done too. I wish the playoffs started today, too bad we can't bottle this momentum.

Indeed it would be. I am not sure where Kovalchuk will end up, but if he lands in Los Angeles, the Kings would become a favorite in the west.

Chicago/Washington would be good, but I think SJ/Washington would be phenomenal.

I think if LA drops out of the Kovy running, Washington might step up and offer Semin and a couple other players. I doubt they'd miss a beat w/that trade.

Too bad they won't trade for Souray, he's out until April or so.

I'm really not too sure... I've never bought tickets from scalpers outside the building. I would just go on MSGticketexchange.

the two teams expected to be going after Kovalchuk are the Bruins and the Rangers...

As a Rangers fan, I really don't want to trade for this guy. Sure he is an insane player but the price is too high and even he won't make the Rangers a contender.

I think he'll end up being traded to Boston though.

And, Oscar Moller for some reason, I guess ATL likes his upside.

Brayden Schenn has also been mentioned, so I guess any combination of those names mentioned, with Jack Johnson being the gem of the deal for ATL.
