I can confirm from personal experience that some American tourists pretend to be Canadian. I wouldn’t call it ‘common but it’s certainly a thing. What is very common though is the stigmatization of Americans in general, if anything less so against American tourists.
It’s actually kinda wild how condescending the general view of ‘Americans’ is over here. Virtually everyone, and that’s no exaggeration, seems to view Americans as a whole different breed of extremely dumb humans. If Americans were a race, most here would be extremely racist.
can't blame them Belgians. just watching Jimmy Kimmel's show asking random people trick questions pretty much prove how your typical american are clueless of what's going on around them. it's not even funny but sad. anyways, I believe there are certain prejudice that we have that exists among races. it is just unthinkable that americans devolve into a punchline.
one of my closest colleagues is in the Ghent area. She never seemed to hold those views, but she’s also been working on global teams with Americans for a while. Shes indifferent but always tells me her father really hates the Germans. He says it’s in their blood to want to take over the world. She usually makes comments about the Dutch if anything.
