Not even a denial, as if implying 'no no he never directly asked for it, only through an intermediary' is a better response.
The spokesman admits in the first part that Gaetz privately sought pardons, then proceeds to say that Gaetz never asked Trump for a pardon. Whoever this spokesperson is, he/she isn't very good at it.

America is an empty country, and its small towns are dying for lack of young people. In addition, this country doesn't have the jus sanguinis hang ups that countries like Japan have: citizenship and belonging are not defined by ethnic background, but by adherence to the set of principles that define the US.

There has always been a competition for what defines an American. Your view certainly has its adherents. But from the start there was a strain of nativism that favored pre-modern concepts of ethnic and geographic citizenship. Those Americans that hold this belief would not be outdone by even the Japanese.

What makes the United States unique isn’t the degree to which it’s average citizen embraces the notion of Americanism as a belief rather than a birthright. What makes it unique is the fact that the population that believes this is as large as it is.
