My wife works for a union side law firm so during election season she does a lot of organizing of canvassing efforts. When you talk to a lot of people who are struggling and living paycheck to paycheck they simply feel as though their the vote doesn't matter. Their answer to your questions would be "What do any of those things have to do with me?". They feel as though no president has had a tangible impact on their lives so I take the time to vote?
For us who are informed on politics it's easy to forget that a large percentage of the population simply doesn't care and just goes about their day trying to make ends meet.
I think this is why a lot of my wife's canvassing was so effective. She was working with Unite Here and they flew in thousands of unionized service workers (bus drivers, maids / housekeepers, warehouse workers, etc) who can relate to these disenfranchised people.
