Activists who secretly filmed Planned Parenthood charged with 15 felonies

LOS ANGELES -- California prosecutors on Tuesday charged two anti-abortion activists who made undercover videos of themselves  trying to buy fetal tissue from Planned Parenthood with 15 felonies, saying they invaded the privacy of medical providers by filming without consent.

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the charges against David Daleiden of Davis, California, and Sandra Merritt of San Jose. The two operate the Irvine-based Center for Medical Progress.

The allegations say the pair filmed 14 people without permission between October 2013 and July 2015 in Los Angeles, San Francisco and El Dorado counties. One felony count was filed for each person. The 15th was for criminal conspiracy to invade privacy.

Becerra says they used a fictitious bioresearch company to meet with women’s health care providers and covertly record them.

Daleiden, in an email to The Associated Press, said the “bogus” charges are coming from “Planned Parenthood’s political cronies.”

“The public knows the real criminals are Planned Parenthood and their business partners,” Daleiden said.

In April of last year, Daleiden said in a Facebook post that California Department of Justice agents raided his home, seizing all of his video footage along with personal information.

Since then, the case had gone largely quiet, with virtually no revelations about the investigation and no indication that the charges were coming before they were filed Tuesday in San Francisco Superior Court.

The prosecution got a new leader this year in Becerra, a longtime Congressional Democrat, who took over for Kamala Harris when she became a U.S. Senator.

Daleiden and Merritt had previously been indicted in Texas on similar charges in January of 2016, but all of the charges were eventually dropped by July as prosecutors said a grand jury had overstepped its authority. The grand jury had originally been convened to investigate Planned Parenthood, but after finding no wrongdoing turned around and indicted Daleiden and Merritt instead.

Messages left seeking comment from Planned Parenthood representatives late Tuesday were not immediately returned.

I'm beginning my path as a health professional and I've been told by a black liberal doctor to not share my political views with other doctors since many are republicans (I'm just waiting until I'm established enough.) I attended a social event with a lot of specialists in attendance and the applause at the mention of Trump by a comedian will make anyone who stereotypes the deplorables as all unintelligent rethink it.

even if they are educated and intelligent. 

but the doctors i have encountered have been more for the republican party than they are for trump.  i've met some that are embarrassed by him but seem to be content that at least he's republican. 

still though, even in houston most doctors i meet are democrats...especially the ones that aren't old as dirt

Not necessarily. Much more prone to racism yes and in very large numbers. But I grew up with an extremely racist father and I would argue I'm far from being anywhere near racist. I think one or more very racist family members can have 2 effects. Either you adopt their racist views as well, or you turn out the complete opposite.

Those poor homeless folks deserve it either way. If they had the right mentality, like the great dr. Ben Carson said, they would have pulled themselves up by da bootstraps without begging for handouts.

Usually the ones that have well paying jobs that support the Republican Party or Trump don't have social media or rarely use it js

Mainly I find them to agree with the tenants of low taxation and cutting off welfare, and also stricter immigration quotas.

Whenever I tell them that conservatism technically should include the decrease of spending in also military spending, I get differing responses in that. The usual response though is that "security is #1 priority", but how much security do you really need?

I find that our freedoms and rights have been sacrificed way too much for a sense of security in the recent decade and a half.

The correct qualifier for the people you describe is "authoritarian"

Do you know who the most paid public workers in dictatorships are? Law enforcement and military. They are the ones who get salary raises when every other sector of the economy gets a pay cut, and the reason for that is that in the absence of a strong institutional framework (that is weak laws, weak organizations protecting the public interest, and weak people), they control the only means to topple the ruling regime: weapons. So to keep them quiet and on the side of the ruling apparatus, their checks stay fat.

The "security first" argument only works here because people are too ignorant about the outside world to realize that all these countries America is bringing "freedom" and "democracy" to are exactly "security first" states.
