Donald Trump's state visit to Britain put on hold
US president told Theresa May he did not want trip to go ahead if there were large-scale public protests

Donald Trump  has told Theresa May in a phone call he does not want to go ahead with a state visit to Britain until the British public supports him coming.

The US president said he did not want to come if there were large-scale protests and his remarks in effect put the visit on hold for some time.

The call was made in recent weeks, according to a Downing Street adviser who was in the room. The statement surprised May, according to those present.

The conversation in part explains why there has been little public discussion about a visit.

May invited Trump to Britain seven days after his inauguration when she became the first foreign leader to visit him in the White House. She told a joint press conference  she had extended an invitation from the Queen to Trump and his wife Melania to make a state visit later in the year and was “delighted that the president has accepted that invitation”.

Many senior diplomats, including Lord Ricketts, the former national security adviser, said the invitation was premature, but impossible to rescind once made.

Trump has named Woody Johnson, a Republican donor and owner of the New York Jets, as the new ambassador to the UK but has yet to nominate him formally. A large number of US ambassadorial positions remain unfilled worldwide largely due to the Trump team failing to make any formal nominations.

The acting US ambassador to the UK, Lewis Lukens, a career diplomat, clashed with Trump last week by praising Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, for his strong leadership over the London Bridge and Borough Market terror attack.

His remarks came just days after Trump criticised Khan for his response to the attack, misquoting the mayor’s message to Londoners not to be alarmed by the increased presence of armed police.

Khan’s office pointed out Trump’s error later but the president responded by accusing London’s mayor of making a “pathetic excuse”. Khan then called on the UK government to cancel Trump’s invitation. No date had been fixed for the visit.

The UK’s traditional effort to act as a bridge between the US and Europe has become more complex since the vote last year to leave the European Union and Trump’s support for policies that have angered European allies.

The Foreign Office was disappointed when against its pleading Trump went ahead earlier this month with his plan to pull the US out of the Paris climate accord. The UK had lobbied hard for Trump not to take the decision, which has led to a wider break between the EU and the US.

Trump had been an advocate of Brexit, and at one point seemed to want the EU to break up, but confidence has since returned to the bloc with pro-European Emmanuel Macron’s victory over far-right Marine Le Pen in the French presidential election.

From the Times article above:

While Americans focused on the Comey hearing on Thursday, the House passed a bill rolling back Wall Street rules aimed at preventing another financial crisis. And in the Senate, behind closed doors, Republicans worked to shove a bill gutting health care coverage to a vote without a single hearing.

But I thought da Don and his lawyer said he never said anything like "hope you can let this go"?

Donald Trump Jr. defended his father Saturday after former FBI Director James Comey's testimony, saying that his father never told the ousted top cop to end investigations into former National Security adviser Michael Flynn, but merely told Comey he "hoped" that he would.
"I think it's clear that everything that went on in the Comey testimony was basically ridiculous," Trump told Fox's Jeanine Pirro on Saturday.

"You and I both know my father a long time. When he tells you to do something, guess what, there's no ambiguity in it. There's no, 'Hey I'm hoping'. You and I are friends, 'Hey hope this happens but you get to do your job'. That's what he told Comey."

Comey testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday that Trump had said to him during a meeting, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go."

Comey also said Trump said he "hoped" the then-FBI director would pledge his loyalty to the president.

Donald Trump Jr. on Saturday seemed to confirm Comey's account of the meeting by saying that his father didn't tell Comey to end the investigation, but only said he hoped he would.

Many have made the argument that Trump's request can not be considered obstruction of justice because he used the word "hope" and did not tell Comey directly to end the investigation.

Republican senators suggested Comey may have misinterpreted the words of Trump, whom they noted has no experience in government. He also acknowledged he was not directly told by Trump to drop the Russia probe.

Trump’s personal attorney vociferously disputed Comey’s account of their conversations and said that the president “never pressured Mr. Comey.”

The GOP is doing everything they accused the previous administration of doing, and their supporters are everything they accuse liberals of being.

If you think about it, they really do treat politics as religion: they think if they vote often enough and dedicate enough buildings, roads, and bridges to the GOP "representatives," they will finally, in all their magnanimity, recognize their suffering like the heavenly father eventually hear those prayers and sees those churches.

Crazy people...

Da good old GOP man just knows that if those in Wall Street line their pockets, that we all flourish. Who cares if they can cause a financial crash again b, no risk no reward. Even da pushers on Dyckman know this. We just out here living da fast life in da fast lane with Don, and there's nobody with more passing lane power.

We need Da Don to run the country like his many businesses, and he's so dapper and generous that he'll ALLOW us all to piggyback his luxurious made in Mexico (but build a wall and impose a tariff on them) coattails and see stacks too. Da trickle down gunna rain on all of us.
