But famb, lets be honest, that is exactly what happen in this case too.
The socialists voted for totally different reasons than the UKIP folks. I am just sick and tired of these neoliberal crocodile tears all around the World. The EU elite is all about serving the bankers and they would exile migrants the instant it would serve their own narrow economic interests.
Let's not pretend that Europe is some great friend of the Global South.
Now, with that said, British socialists were foolish to leave at this time. They have a Tory government and with the EU out of the picture, their politics will shift further to the right. I, personally, would have voted for remain if I were British.
Who is pretending that is true? Me?
And are you forgetting, when it comes to the furthering of white supremacy and white nationalism, real tears are often shed by people of color. If social democrats want the burden of defending minorities off their back, they should go ahead an acknowledge that, and pay the political consequences for that. Because relying on minorities votes to get elected, then turning a blind eye and forming an alliance with the racist right, makes them no better than the neoliberals they hate so much.
If socialist, social democrats, and progressives want to ride a right wing wave to what they believe is better policy, then fine.
But they don't get to be heroes and innocent at the same time.
This leave vote was carried to victory by an undercurrent of white nationalism. The fact that some progressives can't just openly admit that, or want to claim their hands are clean in the matter, is the reason why neoliberals and more moderates can finesse the black and brown vote so easily.
Because even if the jobs come flowing back, they definitely aren't coming to black and brown neighborhoods first. I find it hard to believe that if conservatives are able to reap some rewards from this, and actually decide to share the new prosperity with the people, that Brixton is getting a jobs program.
So all some of these people that have can't get economic or social justice have to hope for is acknowledgement. Something the social democrats seem unwilling to give at certain points, well unless it is to shame the bigoted right or people of how other liberals have failed them.
And that how you're gonna keep getting bigotry mixed into your social democracy, and make it unappealing to minority voters come primary time.
The stench of white supremacy and white nationalism is thick, and hard to wash off. British socialist just rolled around in the hay with it tonight. So I hope they have some of that "I voted for it for other reasons" cologne to mask the stench, for the next time they want to come around people that originated from the Global South.
You might want to see bigotry mixed in with social democracy, but I have zero tolerance for it.
