I know that leftists can come across as uncompromising when we reject means tested programs, even generous programs with very high income caps, but there is a reason.



The specter of “the rich” getting something is used to deny benefits to all. Even programs that actually are means tested, like this stimulus check, are presented as universal and poised to help the rich so therefore they must be stopped.

Folks, let’s just do universal programs and tax it back through highly progressive taxation.
 
given that the wealthy are a smaller fraction than the poor, overshooting and giving some of them $2k does not make a big difference in the total spending.

people love purity testing everything when it comes to taxes and federal spending but never bother to count the zeros.

Senator Collins is a republican. Doesnt she know that the $2,000 they give the wealthy will trickle down. Its a win win for the working class.

It’s just so strange how we never heard these concerns when they were pushing for tax breaks that overwhelmingly benefitted the rich.
