***Official Political Discussion Thread***

Ironically the police officer who was bludgeoned to death with a fire extinguisher by Trump Supporters was himself a huge Trump Supporter.

There were very fine people on both sides.

I completely agree his Tweets violate their terms of service and I agree they should suspend/ban his Twitter. But there are literally despots who post propaganda on there all day.

Regimes and people who slaughter people for being gay, political opposition, etc. That tweet I posted from the official website of the Chinese embassy in the US, posted how putting a million Muslims in concentration camps is good for them.

They let those accounts stay up but they ban Trump’s. You can’t have it both ways and be selectively outraged. I despise Trump with a passion but there are a lot worse actors out there who are allowed to roam Twitter freely.

It’s playing right into his narrative of being targeted and he has a point. Did Twitter do the right thing? Yes but they can’t be selectively outraged

TLDR
- clean up the entire platform
Twitter, Facebook, Google, and Apple are doing damage control.

They've known that their platforms are problematic ( In some countries, the internet is synonymous with Facebook, and everything on the internet is true), but since they weren't used to destabilize the society in which they're headquartered, that ability to weaponize speech through their channels has been largely ignored.

With that said, Trump is as bad as those dictators. He's just living in a country that has much stronger institutions than those other places where people could successfully create unrest and promote genocide through online propaganda.

Freedom of speech was written at a point in time where it’s not relevant in today’s time with our current capabilities. With that said, there’s no regulating speech, doesn’t work. Only thing you can do is shut them off or shut the platform down.

It’s just like when ninja got banned
Speaking of him

Let us take a stroll down memory lane, to Nov 2016 right after Trump won, and look at one of his predictions for the future...

guess u missed how he ran his campaign

da political ethos is changed forever.

political correctness is relegated to da dustbin of society :pimp:

Broadly speaking, I’m sympathetic to argument that Federal, State and local officials should respect the spirit of the Bill of rights and that if that means constraining private sector actors and or spending tax payers dollars, so be it. The right to privacy should include constraints on your employer. The right to legal counsel should include a very well funded public defender’s office.

Unfortunately, the folks who want blanket immunity for Trump’s posting do not actually believe in an expanded and radically reimagined bill of rights. Stop saying it’s about expanding the 1st amendment.

working at a major city public defender office is really what radicalized me...between policies aimed at the the poor and the absolutely impossible caseload dumped on each underpaid attorney--say hey to your plea deal--there's no such thing as "innocent until proven guilty" for the typical American.

You know what's funny about these Republicans crying about "free speech" when corporate America / book publishers refuse to allow them access or publish their books?

The 1st Amendment refers to Congress, not corporate America.

You'd think a group of people that are so fixated on "free markets" and "capitalism" would have a clue...but as usual what they know and don't know is strictly contingent upon what is beneficial for them.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Last I checked, the legislative branch of the United States government isn't called Facebook or Twitter.

Free speech but take Harry Potter out of public schools because it’s made by the devil :rollin

I am speaking more to the broad issue as it relates to the very large platforms like twitter and facebook and the scope of their powers. It is certainly going to be interesting to see this area of the law develop.

I don't really understand what you mean.
But ok, cool. We'll see if laws change at some point regarding free speech and social media.
