***Official Political Discussion Thread***

His tweets clearly violate their terms of service. This isn’t fire or moral high ground.
Yup there's really no question that they're finally doing the right thing. That doesn't excuse them waiting four years to do this though. It's allowed people to normalize things like birtherism as politics-as-usual. I'm glad an attempted violent overthrow of the government isn't being normalized in the same way.

How though? Social media platforms are privately owned. Unless they are receiving some kind of federal funding, no law can stop them from banning any person they feel like. Especially one who continuously ignores their rules. They have about 10+ years of evidence of trump breaking their rules. BTW... I hope they ban his kids also.

In the Age of Social Media, Expand the Reach of the First Amendment

This is a good article that outlines the argument. Only for very large social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Has DWalk mentioned his Parler handle yet? I’ve had him on ignore for months.

I am certainly not on parler.

It's truly sad/pathetic that so many have been brainwashed into believing the outrageousness that I hear is spread on there.

The conservative "movement" represents a coalition dedicated to the preservation and promotion of an unjust status quo, first and foremost. For a party that is so overtly anti-diversity, this coalition is, in some respects, more diverse than its caricatures would suggest. We shouldn't ignore the outsize influence of the corporate kleptocrats among them, or resort to crude stereotypes that sanitize and sanctify "Whiteness proper" by separating it from the so-called 'White trash." That said, there aren't 74 million bankers and c suite executives in America. There's a reason why Kelly Loeffler spent the past fiscal quarter dressed like a mannequin at Bass Pro Shops, and it wasn't to appeal to hedge fund managers
.

Let's not deny the obvious: we're dealing with intersectional inequality. There are a LOT of Cleti and ninjahoods in this coalition - not to protect Donald Trump's "wealth," but to protect their share of the privileged status afforded to straight, White, Christian, cisgender men. He was their avatar - often literally.

The power that Trump supporters seek isn't strictly material. We should bear that in mind, especially now, with all its various fractures fissuring before our eyes.

I thought I was pretty clear that Trump’s most ardent supporters aren’t primarily motivated by material concerns as they are already fairly well off. Instead, they are largely motivated by a loss of prestige associated with being white and/or cishet men.

I suppose, I wasn’t being clear when I referred to the Capitol rioters as “far right.” Technically, everyone who voted for Trump, especially in 2020, is far right. Trump’s electoral coalition was, indeed, pretty diverse geographically and economically and in much more limited sense, racially. The people at the Capitol were not a random sample of that coalition. It costs money to not work for a few days, fly to DC, stay in a hotel and it requires leisure time to engage with QAnon et al to the point that you believe that rioting in the Capitol building will truly change the election results. As they get arrested and charged, some might be from the very rich and some might be low wage workers who drove there but most will be professionals and small businesses owners, the historical base of fascism.

To be clear, I’m not arguing for any particular electoral strategy or that one form of activism be prioritized over another. I’m just pushing back on the hegemonic troupe in the MSM and much of popular cultural that reactionary racial and gender politics is the domain of poor whites.

I'm glad the party that believes in capital punishment will be ok with it when we hang the traitors.

this is exactly the type of enduring incursion on public peace that the death penalty is aimed at.

if this works the same way as a corner store robbery, everybody who invaded the Capitol should be sweating about that dead cop.

...as well as those who put the battery in their backs.
