There’s a growing belief that former Raiders and Bucs coach Jon Gruden will return to the NFL in 2011.  As his son, Deuce (really?), tells it, Gruden may be targeting 2012.

Via The Big Lead, Deuce Gruden appeared on the Sporting Rave podcast, and Deuce said that the family could be heading for San Fran or Cleveland.

Quarterback Alex Smith is back in the 49ers' picture.

Smith, who sustained a separated non-throwing shoulder on Oct. 24 against the Carolina Panthers, might return to the starting lineup Sunday when the 49ers hope to keep their faint playoff hopes alive against the Seattle Seahawks.

Coach Mike Singletary announced Monday that he has yet to decide whom to start at quarterback. Troy Smith has started the past five games for the 49ers, who are 3-2 over that span. Singletary has said he considers the quarterback position as a spot to be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.http://

Troy Smith completed 10 of 25 passes for 194 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the 49ers' 34-16 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Afterward, Singletary said the decision to keep Troy Smith in the game was a "close call."

"It's one of those situations, he made enough plays that it made sense for me to keep him in," Singletary said on Sunday. "I didn't see that he was throwing the ball to them (the other team) or whatever. But that's just a close call."

Troy Smith has completed just 52.4 percent of his passes (66 of 126) for 1,023 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. His passer rating is 80.2.

Alex Smith completed 59.1 percent of his passes in the 49ers' first seven games (143 of 242) for 1,554 yards with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. His rating is 75.0.
