As much as I LOVE Baron, if we can get Billups, Im ALL for it. Are you kiddin? Billups is a beast, and Baron, if he isnt traded will most likely leave afternext year. But, Im sure this deal is all wishful thinking.
Baron Davis accepts the inevitable: No opt-out for you! (Next up: A trade?)
* Trade exception update: Just got official word that the Warriors' $9.9M trade exception can be used to take back a maximum contract of $10M-the full exception plus $100,000. No more than $10M exactly. I don't expect it to be used, as blogged previously, but there's the official number.

* Note on Baron trade potential: A report that Baron's supremely unlikely to use the opt-out IS NOT THE SAME THING as Davis and his agent providing written notification to the Warriors he's not opting out. Therefore: The Warriors cannot trade Baron until after July 9-presuming that's being contemplated-or unless he provides official written notification before June 30 Which he won't. So: Baron's not getting traded draft night or in the days immediately following.

No shocks, no earthquake-preparedness drills, no shrieks in the night on this news. But still all nods to Lepper with the scoopage on Baron Davis' almost certain decision not to opt-out by Monday's deadline.

He'll have to make due with the $17.8M left on his contract through the 2008-2009 season and somehow, yes, I think BD will manage.

He also might ask-either quietly or BD mega-phone style-to be traded at some point assuming he still hasn't landed a humongous extension or the promise of one, and I am betting the request could happen somewhere right around the All-Star Break.

Lepper also tosses out some thoughts about Detroit wanting to move some players and Baron being a potential candidate to move to the Motor City… and Al Harrington possibly wanting out… Interesting, interesting, as I told G-Lepp just a few hours ago.

Interesting, but…

Sure, major stuff is brewing. But I don't think any Baron trade is going happen any time soon.

Face it: Baron + Harrington for Rasheed Wallace + Chauncey BIllups with all kinds of throw-ins on both sides… that's just too neat and simple to work and frankly I think it makes both teams a little worse.

I realize Detroit could want to make room for Rodney Stuckey. I realize Rasheed might need a new spot. I realize Baron might be workable for Detroit on the one-year deal. (Same with Rasheed for the Warriors. OK, yes, I know the Warriors have always liked Rasheed. Gives me a headache everytime I think about it, but yes.)

But again: I don't think it really helps either team other than for sheer shock-wave purposes and at some point, you don't do things just for the shockage.

I think Baron will at least start the season with the Warriors. Whether he does so happily or not, it's really up to him and it really won't change anything. The Warriors are being smart. Baron is being smart-he couldn't have opted out because there just wasn't the money out there in an open market.

He has to have a great year, he has to finish strong (unlike '07-08) and he has to see what he can get next off-season. Or see if he can't work himself a trade to LA, Miami, Detroit or wherever else he can get himself some more money.

i like JT. I think the main thing holding him down in the draft is that he went to a smaller school. i'm all for it if the warriors decide to pick him

I wouldn't do that trade, mainly because it wouldn't help the future. Billups is solid, but you'll be able to get a pg at a lesser value who isyounger than be locked in for the next few years.

Personally, you basically stick with the core of this team (unless you can get something GOOD for Harrington) for this year and see what it brings you.

Next year, more likely than not, Nellie is gone, so then does the teams philosophy and offensive principles change? You'll grab a future pg based on that.Monta, although undersized for a SG, showed me a lot last season. His midrange game was dramatically better, and I'd prefer him bringing the ball up overJackson's PG skill (e.g. - trying to cross someone, only to dribble off his foot).

Brand Wright will contribute this year, that's my gut feeling. Nellie will make concessions regarding younger players. We've seem BRIEF flashes ofBrandon's and Marco's potential, what if they improve even half of what Monta did from 2 years ago to last year?

All and all, we CAN take a gamble in the first round. Although if it turns into a bust, yet again, I'm sure people (i.e daprescription) will want to firemullin, we're still set up to compete and have no HORRIBLE contracts (e.g. Jrich).

Grab a serviceable, non injury prone Vet who is consistent in his mins and we'll be aight. Preferably one who can board some.

I hate posting rumors, because they're usually baseless.

However, this one made me chuckle.

My buddy at work IM'd this one to me.

Eric Snow and Varajao for Al and Kosta.

I refuse to discuss this.

As I've mentioned over and over again, don't trade Al unless you can get something GOOD. Varajao doesn't count. Kosta is only making like 1.75m, wecan eat that since 265 players in the NBA make more.

This is my reaction:

Dont worry, Dumars isn't dumb enough to do that trade.
the only reason (and good reason) for Joe D to make the move is really just to free up cap space (and get Stuckey in the lineup), cuz he wouldntre-sign Baron to any big deal after the season...maybe he's eyeing somebody on the market in the next couple years...that would be the only reason to getrid of Billups, but Sheed is gone regardless...

The Warriors Packaging the 14th Pick and Trade Exception

The NBA is unique in the sense that it's extremely hard to complete a trade simply to purge salary (as teams do all the time in Major League Baseball) because of the rules of the CBA which require teams to match salary. However, a $9.9 million trade exception like the one the Golden State Warriors have provides just that sort of opportunity.

The Warriors are in a position to package the aforementioned trade exception along with the #14 pick to acquire a veteran player. Some players the Warriors could take a long look at which make less that $9.9 million include:Ron Artest, Leandro Barbosa, Marcus Camby, Boris Diaw, Mike Miller and Nene.

Of course, it takes two to tango. At this juncture it looks like the Suns will likely be able to get a better offer for Barbosa. Also, the Grizzlies would likely want more in return for Miller, especially considering the heat GM Chris Wallace took for the Pau Gasol deal earlier this year.

All that said, if the Warriors can acquire any of the players on the above list (or any other veteran player who is made available on draft night) it's something the team has to pull the trigger on. Securing a player who could help address the Warriors' issues rebounding the basketball would be just what the doctor ordered for Don Nelson, and being able to do so by giving up what essentially amounts to just the 14th pick is a no-brainer.
Will Warriors try to deal Davis?
PISTONS REPORTEDLY HAVE INTEREST IN WARRIORS POINT GUARD

As the hours tick down to an NBA draft that will start the ball rolling on the Warriors' potentially franchise-changing off-season, the team can be sure of one thing: Point guard Baron Davis will remain under contract.

But that doesn't guarantee he'll be wearing a Golden State uniform next season.

A team source said Davis has told teammates he will not exercise the opt-out provision in his contract before its June 30 expiration date, meaning that he will play out the final year of the deal at a salary of $17.8million.

Todd Ramasar, Davis' agent, said Tuesday that "it's not likely" his client will opt out. However, the source said Davis was "realistic" about the difficulty in recouping that guaranteed money in a free-agent market that is not flush with cash.

The threat of an opt out was one of the few pieces of leverage Davis had in talks with the Warriors regarding a contract extension, but it did not spur the team into action. The sides were far apart in terms of numbers when they sat down last month, and although the dialogue has continued, there appears to be a stalemate.

It's possible that Davis - who wants to stay in the Bay Area but was disappointed with the Warriors' offers - will ask to be traded. The Detroit Pistons, rebuffed initially in their attempts to pry forward Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets, are now looking at Davis, the team source said.

Pistons executive Joe Dumars gave notice after Detroit lost the

Eastern Conference finals that anyone on his veteran-laden team could be traded, and the source said Detroit is willing to divest itself of Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups.
Wallace, like Davis an unrestricted free agent after next season, would give the Warriors their best power forward since Chris Webber's first stint in 1993-94 and has three-point range that Coach Don Nelson would love.

The inclusion of Billups, who has been made more expendable by the emergence of rookie Rodney Stuckey last season, would ease any concerns from Nelson about the point-guard position. Although Nelson says Monta Ellis eventually needs to move to point guard, he played him primarily at shooting guard last season, allowing Davis to direct the team on the floor.

Since Wallace and Billups will combine to earn nearly $25 million next season, the Warriors would need to package more salary in a potential Davis trade to make the salary-cap numbers work.

One possibility is adding forward Al Harrington. He is leaning toward requesting a trade this summer, although he will not make a decision until after the draft Thursday, a source close to Harrington said.

Harrington clearly was frustrated at being bounced in and out of the lineup by Nelson last season and at being asked to become a three-point specialist on offense. His role could further diminish if Nelson follows through with his plan of bringing second-year forward Brandan Wright into the rotation.

• A Warriors representative said the team has heard nothing from Kosta Perovic or his agent to back up overseas media reports that the second-year center was looking to jump from the NBA back to the Euroleagues with Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Source: Pistons like Warriors guard Davis

The Detroit News
The Pistons are pursuing Golden State guard Baron Davis in trade talks, according to a Warriors team source, the Contra Costa Times is reporting.

The source told the newspaper the Pistons are willing to deal guard Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace.

Davis will be an unrestricted free agent following the 2008-09 season. His agent, Todd Ramasar, indicated Tuesday that Davis is not likely to opt out of the final year of his contract, in which he is due to make $17.8 million. But that does not preclude the possibility that Davis could be traded.

Davis, 29, is a nine-year NBA veteran who has career averages of 17.1 points, 7.2 assists and 4.1 rebounds. He averaged 21.8 points and 7.6 assists for the Warriors this past season.

As much as i want Billups here, if we were to get Davis then id be happy as hell. I actually want a deal to get done but probably wont happen.

If the Pistons are really serious about wanting Baron...it seems like half of us favor the trade and the other half are on the fence about it..but either wayif it goes down it would make things intereresting, to say the least. and yeah, we can throw in Al+filler(Kosta) to complete the trade to include Maxiell.

Stephen A. Smith said the rumor was basura and Det/GS haven't even talked yet.

on another note what do you guys think about Al/Wright/14 for Elton? It was just a random proposal on RealGM.
