Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

Day off, watched some movies...

Last of the Mohicans... it had been awhile and it's still a really enjoyable watch. Honestly, the entire movie is worth it just for the final sequence of them chasing down Magua. That score.. Michael Mann's solid direction.. DDL as a Native American? Solid.

Next up was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I haven't seen it since it was in theaters and it's still just as entertaining, well-paced, great  special effects, fun action, and compelling story. It takes the best parts of the 1st one and improves on it. Caesar taking power and control over the other apes, Koba challenging him, his family, his connection to his past, and then you add in the human element. It's compelling and well done, as both side's motives are understood and developed throughout. It's even got GARY OLDMAN!

What I liked most about this film, as well as the first one, was you immediately  want more story. And it's not just because they both leave off open ended and with the promise of more installments, most of your action/superhero/whatever movies all do that.. but because they built a really interesting and great world that you just want to see more of. It's one of my under the radar sequels I'm looking forward to the most in the next few years.. the war between humans and apes

I also like the series because it's a good example of a reboot done well. Many understandably might have criticized... another  Planet of the Apes? ugh... but it was done well and that's all that matters to me.

Third up is Expendables 3... which is understandably awful and I have it on in the background. I just want to see action stars and former action stars with big guns. That's all I have to say about that. Ok.. I've got something. Rousey might be decent on screen if she just didn't have that stupid scowl the entire time. Like, I get she's tough and that's what she's trying to portray... but it's just so dumb to look at.

Agree with everything you said, with one exception. DDL's character in the movie was not Native American. He was white, but raised by Native Americans. I remember this well because when the movie first came out, I recommended it highly to the other people who wrote for my high school newspaper, most of whom we're extremely politically correct. So, one of them said to me, "well, I won't see it because I have a problem with a white man playing the part of a Native American." I informed her that the character was supposed to be white. She still said she wouldn't see it. As you probably can tell, that exchange has irked me for years.

But whatever, bottom line is, its a fantastic movie and DDL turns in a typically great performance.

Welcome To Me was weird (not a good weird) and not that good. I didn't even finish it.

Totally agree about Rousey.

Yeah, and it sounds a little sexist to be like "Come on, just smile"

but that's not it. She can play it tough without looking like she's got to use the bathroom

Final movie of the night... Snatch

This movie is great just off Tyrone alone

This whole scene is pure gold.

"It's a ******* anti-aircraft gun"

"You can land a jumbo jet in there"

While I don't need  the high end cable packages with all the movie channels, I kind of miss having them.

Even though I can watch all of the movies with a few clicks or touches on my phone and send it to my TV, it's not the same as browsing on my TV and finding John Wick, or Fast 6 or any number of movies on those channels. It takes the thinking out of "what should I throw on in the background" when you can just browse and find a number of great movies.

I used to love when I'd have like 3 or 4 awesome choices that all started around the same time and you have to pick and choose which one

Plus it was the best way to find a hidden gem or unappreciated favorite movie if you just happened to watch it ten times in a month on HBO. I have some favorite 90s classics that are really bad movies but since I saw them so many times, I just love them.

That's exactly how I grew up man. Would have never seen all those awful yet great 90's action films starring Larenzo Llamas or the guy who took over for Jean Claude Van Damme in bloodsport 2-6. I gotta have a steady stream of HBO/Cinemax/Starz/Showtime or I go crazy. Kids nowadays won't know the struggle of catching "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" about 3/4 of the way through and having to wait until after Real Sports with Bryant Gumble at 12:45 a.m. to catch the next start time.

There's nothing that can replace just randomly changing the tv to x cable channel and a fav movie has already started and you can enjoy it in the background.

Just early tonight I was thoroughly enjoying a few scenes from Back to the Future 2 and Transporter. Just saw it on flipping through channels and that feeling of nostalgic joy just washed over me.

i made the effort to try out rick and morty because of back to the future

ended up being a great cartoon

More choices leads to less happiness.

I have Starz and Cinemax and couldn't find anything worth watching the last two nights so I ended up paying to watch It Follows two nights ago and watched part of the Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo off my roommate's Hulu plus.

Man does Hulu have some pretty terrible movies on there. Like

All the movie channels go in cycles in terms of having decent stuff to watch. I have HBO, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax and there are definitely stretches when I can find **** on any of them. But then there will be times when they all have stuff worth watching, sometimes at the same time. So, on balance, its worth it for me to keep them all. But no guarantees of good programming with any of them.
