You don't understand. They WANT to make it worse. There are Islamic extremists who want to create the so-called "clash of civilizations", an all out war between the Muslim world and the west. And then there are right-wing extremists in the west who want to do the same thing, so they do provocations like this. Stuck in between the two is the vast majority of moderate westerners and Muslims who just want to live in peace.
Nah. Other way around. It is the U.S. government that wants you to think there is a"Clash of Civilizations" and they are the ones that want to make this war of the Muslim world versus the West. They created it. This ideology was all started by Samuel Huntington who thought up of this thesis of a post-Cold War new world order. He also wrote in his book that the West was going to clash with the Muslim world who are going to go all crazy and want to destroy the Western world for representation of modernity, and because they are jealous of their freedoms, etc. During the late 70s, during Carter's administration, Huntington was the White House Coordinator of Security Planning for the National Security Council. So the U.S. government just took this thesis for the New World Order for the Post Cold War era, played it up, and rode with it.
This ideology influenced high officials in the White House and they made it happen. When the U.S. became a hegemony after the fall of Communism, in order to stay powerful and expand its geo-political influence, they needed to retain their identity by identifying a new enemy (also helped to allow them to infiltrate into the region to gain geo-political power for their interests, i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, etc). The new hegemony test started with the First Gulf War with the New World Order. As you see, it is continued now with the "War on Terrorism". Until 9/11, there was no identified and intact enemy, until 9/11 and if anything the U.S. played up on the "Clash of Civilizations".
I do not know why the public is so apt to believe Islamist radicals are out just to destroy the West because it is non-Islamic, modern, etc. I see it completely the other way around, the radical waco Islamist fundamentalist use Islam as a tool for POLITICAL anti-colonial type of leverage rather than how they want to go after the West because they are modern and Christian. If anything, it is a way to fight back what they believe is an emperor that is an foreign, imperialist, colonial bully out to destroy their way of life and attack THEIR religion. That is why Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution by Khomeini in Iran garnered so much support and was supported by Middle Easteners everywhere. That is where Islamic fundamentalism started to have deep influence everywhere else in the Middl East and it popped out other religious radicals like Hamas and Hezbollah in the 80s. Radical and militant Islam was starting to take over the socialist or nationalist secular forms of political ideology in the Middle East and seen as the new tool to fight what they saw as foreign occupiers and invaders from Western governments, rather than it is because they want to destroy the Western, secular, and Christian way of life and because they are jealous of their freedoms. But, in a way, it juxtaposed to identify themselves what they are not and play on their identity of saying I am Muslim and you will not destroy my way of life with your foreign meddling in our politics and lives.
Ok, so I just went on a tangent. Don't even know if what I wrote makes sense. Well, the first paragraph is probably what directly responds to your post.
