You can get a Bot to get your level up and catch pokemon for you
Or you can spoof locations and catch pokemon you wouldn't normally find in your area so you hop to let's say Santa Monica for their treasure trove of Pokemon

It aint a "glitch". Someone was injecting them into the gyms. This cannot be done by conventional means and requires hacking.
