Either way your ISP has all those records so it doesn't really matter. You can avoid that by using a VPN that does not save logs. Not every VPN doesn't keep logs and there have been instances of VPN providers getting exposed for keeping logs when they publicly claimed they didn't. In those instances, investigators could simply subpoena the VPN provider to access those logs.

The only thing your ISP can see when you use a VPN is that you're connected to a VPN, it can't see what you're doing while connected to it.
