Rumors have popped up in the last few days that five-star wide receiver Deion Walker has shown an increased interest in Virginia Tech. Hokiehaven.com caught up with the 6-foot-4, 186-pounder to find out what is going on.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp
Walker plans to take an unofficial to Tech.
"I am talking to them a lot more lately than any other school," he said. "I talked to coach Cavanaugh and Sherman both in the past two weeks. I'm also staying in contact with Tyrod Taylor.

"The fact he's playing now is big. If I decide to go there, he's a freshman quarterback and will have a lot of experience during my freshman year. I also have taken notice of the fact they are losing four receivers this year and that gives me a chance to come in and play as a freshman. Tyrod has talked to me about how he's enjoying Tech and how they are losing receiver."

What else has he been hearing from Tech?

"Basically they are saying that Tyrod will be fully equipped and into the system when I get there and they are reiterating the fact of losing receivers," he said. "If I come in and work hard enough, I could possibly go in and play."

Virginia Tech appears to certainly be in a much better position for the No. 29 prospect in the nation after the recent recruiting push. Where does Tech stand?

"I really don't have a list, but they are definitely in the running," he said. "I've been talking to them a lot and have taken notice of the receivers and the fact they have an outstanding freshman quarterback.

"I want to go see them play. I've told coach Cavanaugh that I'd like to come for the Florida State or Miami games. I kind of want to get up there before then too, now that I think about it."

Although Walker plans to take a visit or two to Blacksburg, it doesn't appear likely that either will be an official.

"I hadn't really thought about it. The fact I can drive there on my own, I doubt it."

Meanwhile, Walker has one official scheduled at this time.

"I've got one for Florida State on October 6th," he said. "I know I'm probably going out to Southern Cal sometime in November. I don't have any others planned, although I'm looking at LSU, Florida, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Michigan and Tennessee possibly."

As for favorites, it appears there is a different one every few weeks for the No. 2 prospect in the Commonwealth. Currently, Florida State, Penn State and Southern Cal are listed as leaders, is that the case?

"It is, but it isn't," he said. "I like them along with Nebraska a lot. I'm looking at a lot of different things. I want to see how often they throw the ball. I'm checking out the changes that are being made with these schools and what coaches are there. I've got to look two years from now.

"In relation to a decision, I'm hoping for December 1st or around there."

In the meantime, Walker has been sidelined with a turf toe injury.

"I'm probably going to be out two or three weeks," he said. "I'm not going to be back this weekend, but hopefully maybe next week. I got hurt in the first game of the season and probably shouldn't have played."

RECEIVING CORPS GETS ANOTHER BOOST

Last week, the Texas passing game got a shot in the arm with the return of Jordan Shipley, and the group should again make progress this weekend with the return of Billy Pittman, who has finished up his three-game suspension.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp
Billy Pittman will return to action this week.
Pittman (along with defenders Sergio Kindle and Henry Melton), officially rejoined the team on Sunday night.

"We're definitely happy to have him back," said Quan Cosby. "He's been really eager to come back."

Pittman's return should give Texas its full complement of receivers for the first time all season. Although no official word has been given on Limas Sweed's availability, he was listed as a starter on this week's official depth chart, and he was one of six receivers that offensive coordinator Greg Davis listed as players that will be in the rotation this week, joining Cosby, Shipley, Pittman, Nate Jones and true freshman Brandon Collins.

LOOKING FOR SOLUTIONS TO RECENT RED ZONE WOES

One of the hot topics immediately following Saturday's win over Central Florida and again on Monday was Texas' struggles in the red zone. Mack Brown, Davis and several Longhorn players all mentioned that the team will be working overtime this week trying to find out what's causing the problems, and the coaches indicated that it was a combination of factors that's causing the offense to stall inside the 20.

Brown cited, in part, the inconsistency with the team's running game and he said after looking at every single play, there was no common element that resulted in the breakdowns. On each snap, it was a different person making a minor mistake.

Quarterback Colt McCoy, always his own harshest critic, put much of the blame on his own shoulders. The redshirt sophomore, who has already thrown five interceptions this year and nearly had a good half dozen other passes picked off, indicated that he's not performing as well as he can, including when the offense gets near the end zone.

"I'm not playing at the standard that I need to be playing at. There are some things that I can do better," McCoy said. "I'm missing some things, making a few bad reads that can help us, especially in the red zone."

Davis listed the team's red zone struggles as one of the biggest disappointments in Saturday's win, and he indicated that he may have to look at what plays he calls in that area. With the field shortening up, Davis said, the quick hitch passes to the receivers that are essentially counted as runs are less likely to work.

"I appreciate (kicker) Ryan Bailey, but I'd rather he didn't score 17 points. I'd rather him score seven kicking after touchdowns. We have to do a better job in the red zone. We have to evaluate that," said Davis.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp
Jamaal Charles will concentrate this week on holding onto the football.
COACHES NOT WORRIED ABOUT CHARLES

Running back Jamaal Charles was exceptional in last week's win, going for 153 yards and a score on just 22 carries, but he also coughed the football up twice in key situations. His first fumble came in the second quarter on Central Florida's 3-yard line, and his second happened in the closing minutes of the contest with Texas trying to run out the clock.

Charles was very hard on himself on Monday when asked about the turnovers, but both Brown and Davis were less critical.

"He was protecting the ball in both cases. He had his hand on the ball and probably has to put two on it. But he has a really aggressive running style. He spins, he turns and he was fighting for yards in both cases," Brown said. "We told him, 'don't quit running like you're running and when you feel like you're getting in more traffic you just have to do a better job of trying to put two hands on it.' But he was really running hard and we're proud of him."

Davis echoed those sentiments, giving credit to the Central Florida defenders for making good plays on the ball, but he did say the issue has been and will continue to be addressed.

"It's not a free pass. We certainly addressed it with him and we'll address it with him on the practice field," Davis said.

HILLS WORKS OVERTIME

Just how important has offensive tackle Tony Hills been to the team's success? The senior played in every snap all 90 of them on Saturday and the coaches said this week that Hills has not missed a single offensive play all year.

Hills, listed at 305 pounds, has benefited from some tough off-season work, including a change in his diet and a difficult workout program with his younger brother Jeremy, who is a current Longhorn commitment.

"Unbelievable," Mack Brown said of Hills' play against Central Florida. "He has played so much better than he ever has. I am so proud of him. He's been a leader."

Quote of the day

"Injuries are a distraction but they're an excuse. You can't control them. We didn't have any really for two or three years there and last year we had a whole bunch. This year we're having a whole bunch and we're not doing anything any different. You can either use it as an excuse. I did when I first started coaching at North Carolina. All it did is give you a reason to lose, and we're not going to do that here. We've got enough good players, somebody else needs to play and our coaches need to keep getting them ready to play." Mack Brown

Quote of the day (Part II)

"I saw that look in his eyes that we used to see with Vince's. When they went ahead he said 'let's go get back ahead, let's go win the game.' There was no panic." Mack Brown on Colt McCoy
